Seems to have a pretty good nose for the puck! His size is an undeniable asset. maybe he can learn a mean streak ala Jiri Fischer...

I know i may be backtracking on myself... but lets hope this kid is not trade fodder come Tuesday!

Ericsson factoid: Having been selected with the 291st overall pick in 2002, he is now the lowest-drafted player ever to appear in an NHL game.

Excellent draft that year: 4 of 8 players have now played an NHL game for the Wings (Rex, Flip, Meech, Ericsson) and a 5th (Logan Koopmans) would be playing for the Griffs if not for hernia surgery.

And wasn’t my man Fleischmann selected that year too, ahead of Flip? We really did our homework that year.

I like the catch-22s on this forum. After ONLY 2 games people want Ericsson to stay, but at the same time people are like, "Well, I don't know if Meech has what it takes to play in the NHL." I know Meech has only played roughly 25, 30 games, certainly understand and get that, but still...

No, I don't have any special discontent with Ericsson or any weird man-love for Meech.

All things considering in the current situation of the defense corps though, in my opinion I think he's earned himself more PT, and possibly the 8th d-man behind Meech. Meech overall has looked decent in full-duty as well. Quincey, while I like him and thought he performed well last playoffs in emergency duty, hasn't looked all that great so far recalled up this season.

That was a pretty solid draft if all five of those guys end up as NHL regulars. Of course, the Wings have only had four drafts from 1983-2002 which did not yield at least two NHL regulars; 1987, 1988, 1999, and 2001. Those drafts yielded Yves Racine, Sheldon Kennedy, Henrik Zetterberg, and Dmitry Bykov, respectively. The 2001 draft still has the potential of yielding another regular (Grigorenko and/or Jamtin) and drafts after 2003 are too recent to grade in this respect. But man, you know you had a bad draft if Sheldon Kennedy is the only NHL-caliber player you got.

It's worth noting that Meech was named third star against Vancouver. He was therefore named the best Wings' player in the game. As I said at the beginning of the season; Meech is a more skilled defenseman than Lebda and would supplant him or Lilja by next season.

Jonathan may be excused because it was only his second game, but he did look very nervous some times when he went for the puck in the defensive zone to play it up. Many times it resultet in just a giveaway to the forechecking of vancouver. Alot of upside on the offensive play though. Had some great shots and very heads up and ready in offensive zone.

I have to say that Im really impressed by Meech though, he plays a more silent game maybe but is responsible and solid as a veteran.

I might put Meech ahead of Lebda since Lebda hasnt developed alot from the usual thing when he skates straight forward and makes a shot straight at the goalie from almost no angle at all.

Lebda has been a regular for a while now; I think this was make or break for his career with the Wings. He may replace Meech in the press box each night when everyone gets back from injury.

I thought Ericsson looked good and Lebda did look bad, but he's not used to being a top two guy, he's usually number six...I think he'll be ok once the injured guys are healed and he's back in his element

With Ericsson showing more potential than Lebda and the recent slump in offense right now, would it be possible to convert Lebda into a forward? Lebda is very good breaking into the offensive zone and could give our team a nice spark. Or, would his lack of offensive skills be too much to take a chance on?

Thoughts??

I was impressed with Ericsson, but a lot of it simply had to do with his size. Meech on the other hand, the last few games, has been impressing me more and more every time I watch him. He still has a way to go with his defensive play, but man, has that kid got a rocket of a shot! And not only that, but the shots are good shots, not just like Samuelsson's at the crest on the goalies jersey. I'm impressed by it, but let's see how it goes.

Edit: spelling

This is good to hear. Depending on what happens this season, would you like to see Lilja let go and have the Wings bring up these young guys to get a season with Lidstrom and Chelios?

No way! He skates well, but he can't score, and has no grit whatsoever to forecheck. In fact, he's about as physical as a fluffy pillow. He would do a good job of carrying the puck into the zone, but after that he wouldn't know what the hell to do, as you see frequently with him now.

Just because someone's big, doesn't make them look impressive (think Max Kuznetsov). Usually, these big guys come up and look really awkward until they get their positing down.

What's been most impressive to me about Ericcson is he hasn't looked awkward at all. He moves extremely well laterally, and his wingspan is very impressive. In fact, he reminds me of Pronger (no pressure) the way he moves so well for a big man.

As much as his bonehead plays kill me, I could see keeping Lilja, because he's a good penalty killer and he's our only experienced D-man with size. That said, I wouldn't sign him for anything above $1.5 per.

However, I'm absolutely convinced that Lebda needs to go. Find someone to take him off our hands and let Quincey, Meech, or Ericsson (my preference) take his spot.
