RockyMountainWingGal 108 Report post Posted March 2, 2008 Well I'm not expecting Dmac, who will only get a few min a game I'm supposing, to turn the ship around. I'll wait and see what he looks like before I judge his contribution. Emotionally it could have a good lift for the team. Plus, there are few wasted roster spots that are worth giving to someone else....
Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted March 2, 2008 Remember how Kocur came back into the NHL via the "Beer League"? Like Kocur - Dmac isn't expected to rack-up points, nor tons of time in the sin bin...He'll be playing 6 to 10 min a game on the 3rd/4th lines, & add some grit to our team, a few fights, & maybe a few goals. The chance to see a few more fights is really the only thing im looking forward to. I just hope people keep their expectations in check as to how he's going to look in those scraps, and that he's best off fighting middleweights for the most part. In that essence, he would be replacing Drake...which i wouldnt have a problem with. This is one instance where i really hope im proven wrong about a player... I can't wait to see him, Lilja, and Downey in the lineup. That's the toughest Wings roster in years, except I have a gut feeling that we'll never dress McCarty and Downey in the same game, unless there's injuries. Probably not, unless McCarty replaces someone ilke Drake. Frankly, I don't care about the team being tough. A lot of people around here will be disappointed when they find out having players who can fight doesn't win cups. But I think McCarty will spark this team, provide the storyline that all championship teams need, and maybe a little bit of scoring and grit.

Probably not, i guess at this point im worried how he'd even fare against someone like Phaneuf though. Hopefully he'll be out there throwing the body every chance, Mac really wasnt much of a hitter his last few seasons here imo.

JeeSpot82 10 Report post Posted March 2, 2008 Am I the only one who thinks that he won't be playing as a regular? Joining the team is quite different than supplanting someone from the lineup. Yes, it will be nice and nostalgic to see his name and number on the scoresheet, but I can't imagine he'll bump anyone from our roster when everyone's healthy. I agree with some of you that say he'll get in a few games toward the end of the season to see where he's at, but I have a hard time imagining he'll be anything but an insurance injury replacement come playoff time. Sorry to say, because I'd give just about anything to have the late-90s version of Darren McCarty back (or STILL on the team). If it were up to me, I would have found a sucker to take Mikael Samuelsson off of our hands and dangled Kopecky on Trade Deadline day to create a tiny bit of wiggle room -- if not for McCarty, for someone coming IN last Tuesday. I can think of a few players that he could replace, especially if we play a big, physical team, which just about every top team in the West is.
WiNgSowN 0 Report post Posted March 3, 2008 I'm guessing Downey won't be in the lineup when the playoffs start, so let's say Cleary or Mac replaces him one more person will have to sit. Who will that be most likely? Prob Kopecky
tommingthepuck96 1 Report post Posted March 3, 2008 (edited) Would be a really stupid decision to take downey out of the line up in the playoffs. Wings are going to need enforcers like downey, mcarty, lilja to go after all of the cheapshot anaheim duck players when they go after datsyuk/zetterberg/nicky/homer We saw what pronger did last year getslaf/pronger/may/parros/perry all need to be put on there mules. And If those 3 wings aren't in the lineup ducks will play dirty. just like they always do. Although having kronwall/stuart and lilja on d will probably make the wings just as physical as the ducks will be. Assuming everyonebody is healthy Dats/Zett/tom flilpula/cleary/samuleson hudler/franzen/drake darren/draper/kirk nicky/raflalski kronwall/stuart chelios/erikson/lilja Perfect for the playoffs Edited March 3, 2008 by tommingthepuck96

I thought you said it would be stupid to take Downey out. Anyway, what I think we are going to see more of out of Mac is drive. Sure Mac used to fight and all that, but he was part of the Grind Line for a reason. He was a grinder. He's a Draper kind of player, he hustles whenever he's on the ice. He's always moving, digging and playing hard. That's what I hope to see out of him. Energy. Sure some fights would be nice, and some definite hitting, but I'm looking forward to seeing that energy of his charging up the team again. Sure he may not have quite as much in the tank as he used to, but he still has the attitude (more so now I think because he has something to prove) and I think that can get a team going too. NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted March 3, 2008 That doesn't mean he'll be playing..it just means he'll be on the roster. Exactly. People really need to realize that just because he's on the roster, it doesn't mean he'll be on the game roster.
Inultus 12 Report post Posted March 3, 2008 btw, anyone know if he got to keep his Cup rings? I saw they were up for auction at one point. Yeah, he made some deal with his creditors and got to keep his rings. That's about all he got to keep tho. Go Mac!
esteef 2,679 Report post Posted March 3, 2008 Exactly. People really need to realize that just because he's on the roster, it doesn't mean he'll be on the game roster. The same people that needed to realize he won't make it out of the IHL, or the AHL, or score any goals, or get up to the NHL with the Wings? Those people? MAC's not being brought up to ride the bench, we have enough capable bodies for that. I'm through listening to all these people that think they know everything, cause they've been wrong on just about every count with MAC so far. I feel better. esteef

Andy Pred 48 337 Report post Posted March 3, 2008 Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the roster size and playing roster increase come the playoffs? I thought we can dress 2N/M 7D and 13FWDS, 22 in all? or is that only in the minors?

When did I become a naysayer when it comes to Mac? First and foremost I'm a realist, and a bigger Mac fan than anyone on this board. I absolutely think he has something left in the tank and think he'll be a solid 4th liner for the Wings hopefully in the not so distant future. Please tell me once where I said he won't make it out of the IHL or the AHL. Maybe you're referring to some other posters, but it sure seems like you're coming at me. If that's the case, you need to check my post history, because never once did I say Mac couldn't or wouldn't do it. All I'm saying is that I wouldn't be surprised if he was a healthy scratch the first few games just to get comfortable with the NHL speed.
Frozen-Man 144 Report post Posted March 3, 2008 I like McCarty and all...but we still cant score...and he isnt going to solve that for us. Hudler, Kopecky, Franzen..and even our goal scorers arent scoring...we need Ceary and our top 4 d men back.. Well at least were getting more North American players..And a little bit tougher...but I doubt McCarty will have any impact.. Mac is not being brought in to be a high production scorer. That isn't and has never really been his role. We are still tied for the most goals for even with all of our injuries and I have little doubt that if and when our guys heal up and get back to playing that problem will solve itself. Like we're all too dumb with our rose colored McCarty glasses on to understand that he may have limited minutes (at least initially). No offense.
