Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted March 9, 2008 (edited) Anyone else here watch Coaches Corner earlier and catch that little piece of comedic gold? I mean, it's been apparent for a while that Grapes is way off somewhere in right field, but I think this is the indicator that retirement might be in the near future. When you consider all the defenseman in the league, and that goes for anyone even outside of Lidstrom, and then he says Ed Jovanovski of all guys should win the Norris, you have to wonder sometimes... I still watch him, because he's an icon in hockey, but some of the stuff he says is so ridiculous. But, I guess at the same time, it does give people something to laugh about. Vincanni 1 Report post Posted March 9, 2008 Jovo for Norris? I'm sorry but I'll have to see a link to believe this, no one is that chronically retarded, he didn't actually say that did he? If true grapes is the dumbest sport personality ever and needs to retire immediately. I don't care how much a character he might be, Maggie the monkey can give better insight than that this joke of a human being has given if he actually suggest Jovo even in the top 5 to win the Norris this year. I'm not lying; he really did say that. I'll try to post the video of CBC's website puts it up, but it's hard to really get access of Coaches Corner videos online. If I find the video, I'll post it. jim3033 1 Report post Posted March 9, 2008 Today's Don Cherry = :puke: He's really everybody's grandpa. If you're not Canadian you are some sort of bastard child but he'll never come out and say it. He's good for Canada I guess. He's so stubborn!
BeeRYCE 2 Report post Posted March 9, 2008 Jovo has no chance of winning Norris, I can't even see him in the running, but I will say this... He has been nothing but success this season. He is the best player on Phoenix right now, and has been all season. A team that before the season had everyone predicting that they'd be unbearably bad, but they're hanging through, and Jovo has paid his dues on that team. Norris? No chance in hell, but recognition for a rather good season? Yes.
eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted March 9, 2008 Jovanovski would win the Norris if: If the Norris were for best defenseman who has been a teammate of all three of Daniel Sedin, Daniel Carcillo, and Dan Boyle. If somehow the voters failed to recognize the fact that there are 20+ defenseman who are better than him. If Lidstrom, Zubov, Chara, Phaneuf, Rafalski, Niedermayer, and pretty much every other #1 defenseman misses 40+ games in a year Jovo posts career highs in offense and plays solid defense. Other than those three scenarios...it won't happen.
RainingBlood 8 Report post Posted March 9, 2008 Lidstrom has been out for several weeks and still leads defenseman in points by 3. He has 57 and Jovanovski has 48. Unless Phoenix wins the cup his Norris hopes are as good as shot. Whatever Norris hopes he actually has. Thank god Cherry dosent have a vote, unless I hope he dosent. Yellowknife Redwing 57 Report post Posted March 9, 2008 Cherry also said tonight that Chris Pronger is the most valuable player playing the game today. I like Don and all, but good lord man...get it together
Doggy 130 Report post Posted March 9, 2008 Yeah I watched HNIC. It was just Grapes being Grapes. He always says silly stuff like that. Probably why I love him. Did you see him after that though? He was visibly emotional when talking about the Canadian soldier who died. His heart is in the right place.
cirov19 1 Report post Posted March 9, 2008 (edited) Of course he would say Jovo should win the Norris... Jovo is Canadian, it's as simple as that. 100% biased suggestion. Ignore it. Lidstrom is the one for the Norris. Edited March 9, 2008 by cirov19

Earthhuman 8 Report post Posted March 9, 2008 Cherry also said tonight that Chris Pronger is the most valuable player playing the game today. I like Don and all, but good lord man...get it together He made the case that St. Louis fell to the sewers when Pronger left and so did Edmonton. He forgot to mention that those teams lost plenty of other players in the years they fell apart. He also never mentioned that the same thing would happen if Lidstrom left, if Ovechkin left, if Nabokov left, if Kovalchuk left, if Sundin left, if Kiprusoff left, if Malkin left... all non-Canadian. rage 24 Report post Posted March 9, 2008 The only really bad part about HNIC is when the Leafs games are being called. Not only the commentary, but the sound of the fans when Mats Sundin shoots the puck *(knowing the Leafs are totally out of the Playoffs)* and misses the net and the fans GASP as if the puck just hit the post on a 5th Overtime Period Stanley Cup Finals Game 7 shot!!!!!!!!!!! I hate the Leafs, sorry.

chrisdetroit 189 Report post Posted March 9, 2008 Lidstrom has been out for several weeks and still leads defenseman in points by 3. He has 57 and Jovanovski has 48. Unless Phoenix wins the cup his Norris hopes are as good as shot. Whatever Norris hopes he actually has. Thank god Cherry dosent have a vote, unless I hope he dosent. Just a couple of clarification. Lidstrom has not been out "for several weeks", he's only missed 6 games. Secondly, the Norris trophey balloting is done before the playoffs even start. The results are not announced until after the Cup is awarded, so winning or not winning a Cup has no bearing. Jovanoski is Canadian and in Don Cherry's mind ANY Canadian >> any European. He's the biggest xenophobe on the planet.

He was visibly emotional when talking about the Canadian soldier who died. His heart is in the right place. You know, he does that on almost every show due to the circumstances (tho I think their causalities were down for the past few weeks). At first I found it just a tad sanctimonious. And now, I choke up watching this. 'Just a beautiful boy - look at him.' I applaud Grapes - most his wack notwithstanding, he has garnered my respect. He acknowledges the sacrifices compatriots have made for his freedom. And I live in the Colonies where the gov't bans photos of returning casualties, let alone acknowledging them. SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted March 9, 2008 I like whenever I get to hear Cherry because he can get pretty nuts. He's hilarious and passionate. That being said, nothing against Jovanoski cause he's a solid d-man, I highly doubt he's much in the running.
Yellowknife Redwing 57 Report post Posted March 9, 2008 Jovanovski is also -7 on the season and -36 career. He's had 2 seasons in his career where he was in the plus column. There are exceptions, but I think most of the time a defenseman's points are only as good as his +/- will support. I think Duncan Keith deserves a nomination over Jovo based on his +28 and being with one of the worst clubs in the league for the vast majority of the year. That said, if Nick doesn't get his 6th Norris, it will be grand larsony.
