Yemack 1 Report post Posted May 13, 2008 No this is not about Babcock who I think is certain to get his raise after this season and stay in Detroit. Rather, this is about our assistance coach Todd McLellan. Just check this out : http://www.denverpost.com/avalanche/ci_9238407 A lot of teams fired their head coaches and because we look so dominant right now, it was evident that soon or later, teams would turn their attention to our staffs. Now, I don't know about you guys but I think our assistance coaches are a huge part of our success right now. So obviously, I'm not that thrilled about the possibility. And from the sound of it.. I think McLellan is welcoming the idea of leaving our club and becoming a head coach somewhere else. So what now? Are there any ways to keep our assistance coaches in Wings orginization? Maybe huge bonus should be awarded IF we win 5 more games? or Is it inevitable?
Opie 308 Report post Posted May 13, 2008 If you listened to Babs' presser after the game yesterday he pretty much gave all the PK credit to the assistant coaches, so he agrees with you (as do I) that they are a huge part of the success. But so aren't Stevie, Bowman, Nill, Devellano. My point is I guess good for McLellan (he is the one I see getting offers), he obviously deserves it, but it won't hurt the Wings like it did the Pats when teams raided their cupboard, this team is deep on the ice and in the front office/coaching staff. ShanahanMan 473 Report post Posted May 13, 2008 (edited) wow....talk about ZERO loyalty. I never thought good old Todd McLellan would be willing to leave us and go coach ONE OF OUR BIGGEST RIVAL TEAMS. Not only willing but according to the post, he's "very interested". Thats pretty sad, as I really do consider him a very important part of our organization. Then again, I guess its normal for people to want to move on to bigger and better things......and he won't be replacing Babcock here anytime soon. Meh is all I have to say. Graybeard 0 Report post Posted May 13, 2008 Just a reporter asking him a question. Who's to say that the Avs have even considered it. There's been some rumors going around that our old friend Patrick Roy is considering a job behind the bench in Colorado.

The coaches that were fired have excellent pedigree. I would think that guys like Ron Wilson and Paul Maurice would be considered before McLellan.
Yemack 1 Report post Posted May 13, 2008 yeah obviously he deserved it. He has done a great job for us and he probably worked all his career to become a NHL headcoach so who can blame him? It just sucks that he would leave though.
Wings3:16 324 Report post Posted May 13, 2008 Kind of a dick thing to say when we're this far into the playoffs, that he'd leave to the Avs if given the chance...I understand its for a full time coaching position, but I think those comments should be said after the playoffs...maybe its just me. Maybe so. But then again maybe it was a good idea for him to throw it out there to put the thought in the Dives managment's heads.
Opie 308 Report post Posted May 13, 2008 What is he supposed to say when a reporter asks, No, I want to be an assistant the rest of my life, I have no career goals other than being Babs' little *****! He didn't say on his own he wanted to coach the Avs it would be his dream job, he just said if they asked he would accept. After being prompted by a reporter, he would be dumb to say no, I wouldn't take it!

The guy has earned the right to advance hsi career. How else is he going to become a head coach? I say, it'll suck losing him, but I don't hold it against him at all. Career advancement is a part of life.

McCellan wasn't here in the late 90s when the wings and avs rival really was there. McCellan wants a head coaching opportunity. If he can get one ANYWHERE in the NHL, all I can say is good luck...you will need it against the red wings.
high_stick69 7 Report post Posted May 13, 2008 Hopefully the dives get Patty Wahh as their coach. It would be great seeing him cry on the bench while the Wings take the Avs apart. Colorado is on the downswing. Sakic won't be around much longer, and neither will Foote or Floppa. Ryan Smith is an overpaid injury and Brunette will probably take a FA payday with another team. Aside of Statsny the cupboard is pretty bare.

How selfish would we be, to begrudge McLellan the chance to reach the pinnacle of hockey coaching? Chances to coach an NHL team don't come around every day. We're not talking about a lifelong Wing who's spent 12 years fighting these guys. Assistants come and assistants go. If McLellan gets his shot with the Avs, congrats to him. I'd love it if he were to stay forever, he's doing a great job, but being the assistant coach in one place does not close off a certain job elsewhere. OsGOD 3 Report post Posted May 13, 2008 (edited) Eh, its a job... its a huge promotion... its more money... who are we to say Don't take it!!! be an AssCo for the rest of your life... Graybeard 0 Report post Posted May 13, 2008 I think the Dives should hire Melrose as their head coach and Roy as his assistant. Wouldn't it be fun spanking them then.
Packer487 3 Report post Posted May 13, 2008 It's a compliment to have other teams interested in your assistant coaches. Part of the cost of having a great coaching staff and a great team year in and year out. Teams are going to come after our assistants (in Lewis's case and Barry Smith's case, they passed up opportunities) and people in our front office. It would suck to lose him, but it's hard not to view it as a positive that our (former?) arch-rival is interested in one of our assistants. Says a lot for the coaching staff that Holland and Babcock have put together.

Oh Melrose as the Avs coach would be fricken awesome. I'd hate him all the more; and seeing the Wings light up his team game after game would be great! GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted May 13, 2008 Sakic should retire and coach their team. He's well respected and liked, and he looked done as a player after that series against the Wings.
Opie 308 Report post Posted May 13, 2008 Sakic should retire and coach their team. He's well respected and liked, and he looked done as a player after that series against the Wings. Dude you take an ass whooping like that, I guarantee that you would look done to!! I think Sakic should wait a year or two (after he retires) before jumping in, it is hard to go from player to coach in one year, too many of the guys still will think of you as a player. But he has the head and the leadership abilities that are the making of a great NHL coach!!!!

Graybeard 0 Report post Posted May 13, 2008 As much as I hate the Dives I like Sakic. He's always been a class act even when surrounded by scumbags. I'd hate for him to go into retirement with his last game being the ass whoopin the wings layed on them in game 4.
pavyaz19 1 Report post Posted May 13, 2008 he'd rather be a head coach instead of an assistant. big deal, that's what they're all working for, so give him a break. if you worked for IBM but were offered your bosses position at Apple, I'm sure you'd take it. Promotions are part of the business.
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted May 13, 2008 My sources tell me that Steve Yzerman is the frontrunner right now for this job. Darren McCarty is also rumored to be contemplating retirement, to join their staff as Yzerman's assistant.
