digitaljohn88 4 Report post Posted May 21, 2008 I'm feeling some discontentment in the community for Mr. Samuelsson..... What's up? Useless trivia...in 2003...the Pens traded their 1st round pick (#3 overall) and Samuelsson to move up to #1 and drafted Fluery Most of the hate is because he often leads our team in shots...yet never scores. He has a knack for hitting shin guards, goalies' logos, and the jaws of better Wings players. The area around the net is also a big target for Sammy. Plus he is usually the weak spot on our powerplay playing the point.
PaVel DaTsYuK fan13 0 Report post Posted May 21, 2008 My beef with Samuelsson is that he'll fire useless shots away like no tomorrow, but then when presented with an obvious scoring oppurtunity he'll finally decide to share the puck, only to find that the oppurtunity is gone. IMO it all comes down to deciscion making with Sammy, and he just does things that I frankly don't understand.
EuroTwin 240 Report post Posted May 21, 2008 He alone gives me twelve heart attacks a game through needless penalties, give aways and being terrible at keeping the puck in at the point on the PP.

He has a knack for hitting shin guards, goalies' logos, and the jaws of better Wings players. The area around the net is also a big target for Sammy. This is complete fact. Our top-6 forwards have shooting percentages in the double digits. Team average is a little over 9%. Sammy? 4.4%. Takes more shots per game than anyone but Zetterberg and has 11 goals to show for it. Sammy is also worthless as a playmaker - fortunately he plays a wing. He's a decent player without the puck. Good responsible player in his own end. But his shot is just terrible, and there's no excuse - he practices it enough during games.
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted May 21, 2008 Just watch that breakaway of his the last game. That should answer all your questions. The guy didn't even hit the net. Also, Cleary has sucked since his jaw was broken, and it was broken by Sammy's shot. Another reason is that he's a right handed shot, and we don't have many forwards who shoot right handed, thus more is expected from him than if he was left handed, in which case he probably wouldn't get as much criticism. Third Man In 2,091 Report post Posted May 21, 2008 LGW needs a whipping boy at all times. The Wings didn't resign Lang after last season. Sammy boldly stepped in to fill his shoes.

Another reason is that he's a right handed shot, and we don't have many forwards who shoot right handed, thus more is expected from him than if he was left handed, in which case he probably wouldn't get as much criticism. In his defense on the breakaway, it was with an inexperienced rookie who was confused on either to speed up or slow down. The Stars defenseman took advantage of Helm's lack of decision-making and caught up past Helm and to Samuelsson, and hooked Samuelsson/got enough of his body to force him to make a bad shot. ThreeRiversFan, every team (or at least in here) seems to have the need to be ridiculously over-anal about certain players to the point of where you just want to tell people to shut the f**k up since we've heard the same song and dance about the certainly player 600-700 times. It was Curtis Joseph a few years ago, it was Robert Lang and/or Andreas Lilja last year, this year it was Lilja to a small degree, but Samuelsson is king this year. Samuelsson's game is pretty accurately described by betterREDthandead, so I won't reiterate. And like many portrayals of whipping boys, they are often greatly overstated and overdramatized. Personally I'm neutral on him. Far from my favorite but he doesn't deserve some of the treatment that he gets on here, as it gets more annoying and repetitive than those tests from the local Emergency Broadcast System. I almost chocked when he was on the breakaway.... Since when does sammy actually MISS the net???? I mean seriously chest bursting is his specialty... for the love of god, you hit the goalie at least when you are on the breakaway. That made me laugh so hard though when he did it...of all the people to miss then net, wouldn't have guessed it would be him As for the OP... Damn you are lucky to have traded him away... damn lucky! Third Man In 2,091 Report post Posted May 22, 2008 A lot of people are jealous of Sammy's mad skillz. Behind Zetterberg and Datsyuk, he's the straw stirring the drink in Detroit. Franzen was scoring at a goal a game pace playing on line with him, and then Draper and Drake both score in game 6 of the WCF after Sammy was moved to their line. But seriously, yes, Sammy takes waaaaay too much grief around here.

BlueMonk 102 Report post Posted May 22, 2008 No matter how bad the angle, no matter how clogged up the shooting lane is, Sammy will shoot the puck. I'd love to see a statistic that measures players with the greatest number of shots taken from within 6 inches of the goal line. Because I think Sammy would rank really high in that category. VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted May 22, 2008 I think a lot of frustration comes not only from him consistently missing his shots and terrible decision making, but frustration with Babcock for giving him such crucial playing time. He's a 3rd liner when he's on a hot streak, and for the longest time he was on the Top 2 lines consistently.

I have a theory, which I just made up, that says that when the NHL created the trapezoid and the goalie no-go zones, somehow Sammy got mixed up and thought the goalie no-go zones were actually the Mikael Samuelsson Designated Shooting Lanes. He's a 3rd liner when he's on a hot streak, and for the longest time he was on the Top 2 lines consistently. That's my angle. Additionally, Wings fans are frustrated because Sammy has single handedly ruined all of the game worn Hasek and Osgood practice jerseys by irreparably wearing away the centre of the Red Wings logo. For further information ask about Kronwall, Lidstrom and Rafalski's practice shinpads.
egroen 384 Report post Posted May 22, 2008 (edited) Heck, I'm curious what the Penguins fans thought about Samuelsson.... was it a big loss, did fans think they overpaid to move up two slots in the draft at the time? I'd say it worked out alright Edited May 22, 2008 by egroen
CrossoverThrash 0 Report post Posted May 22, 2008 He looked noticably better with drake and draper and less minutes, as long as hes on the 3rd line and throwing his weight around i have no problem with him getting lucky on his 20 sog
