rwfan007 18 Report post Posted December 21, 2008 no, the wings have a big number of people in the HoF, but only a half dozen retired numbers. http://www.redwingalumni.com/hallOfFame.html
MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted December 21, 2008 Retiring numbers is more of a modern movement. A vast portion of the old-timers who played back in the heydey don't have their numbers retired, except for special cases like Howie Morenz and Eddie Shore. egroen 384 Report post Posted December 21, 2008 I'm still wondering why the Red Wings do not retire Red Kelly's number -- one of the best defenseman ever, and we had him - take credit for it! Toronto retired his number and Kelly mainly played center for them!

TheOwl 77 Report post Posted December 21, 2008 (edited) Linden didn't really deserve it, but I guess the Canucks felt left out with all their mediocre players over the last 20 years. Lidstrom's should be retired, maybe Datsyuk too when it's all said and done. Edited December 21, 2008 by TheOwl

TheSupafly 50 Report post Posted December 21, 2008 I'm still waiting for my team to have a number retired. I'm thinking they may do it 10 years down the road for either Marleau or Thornton (if he stays with SJ till the end of his career).

Obviously not the talent that many other guys are, but I dont necessarily think retiring a number has to do with talent or numbers or awards. It is simply an honour from an organization to a player. And I 100% agree that Linden was that man for the Canucks.
SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted December 21, 2008 Do most team retire hall of famers? If not which team has the most hall of famers not retired? Being in the hall of fame/team jersey #'s being retired aren't directly related obviously, but you'd think there would be some cases where if you were good enough to get into the hall of fame, you're number is retired somewhere. From a team basis, it's probably attributed if you spent plenty of time there, produced, etc. etc.

miller76 463 Report post Posted December 22, 2008 (edited) Lidstrom's a lock. Dats/Z could get there. I actually think about this a lot. Datsyuk and Z have a lot of years and work cut out for them. I know they are great. But are they Sawchuk great? Or Production Line great? Yzerman? I know Lids will have his number 5 hanging there someday, cause he is arguably the best D man to play the game. I take pride in the Red Wings having only 6 guys up there compared to dozens like Toronto and Montreal. Its a ridiculous joke at how many numbers that are retired or honored, or out of circulation for them. But its nice to know that the amount of players/numbers retired has absolutely no bearing on the talent the Detroit teams have bred and showcased for decades. Doggy 130 Report post Posted December 22, 2008 Clearly you don't watch many Sharks playoff games. Hi Supafly, I didn't mean to offend, I was only making fun in reference to the anger Sharks fans displayed toward his playoff performance a few years ago. As I recall there were a lot of people cursing his NTC but 12 months ago because he was struggling a little this time last year. Doesn't mean much though, some Detroit fans were saying the same thing about Datsyuk a few years ago. Thanks for contributing to LGW. I love seeing good posters that are fans of other teams. toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted December 22, 2008 You only have to play 8 seasons in Montreal to get your number retired there. Are you referring to Ken Dryden? In those 8 years, he won the Calder, Conn Smythe, 5 Vezinas and 6 Stanley Cups. There should be no argument with him. Bobby Orr didn't play very much for the Bruins either. For the record, Montreal does have a lot of retired numbers, but they also have far more players in the HOF that don't have their numbers retired.

eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted December 23, 2008 The statistically most significant All-Star team who won't have their numbers retired are: C: Adam Oates (best argument is 499 points in Boston; too much of a carpetbagger IMHO) LW: Brendan Shanahan (His best argument is Detroit, and he doesn't get that.) RW: Mark Recchi (He's close in Pittsburgh and Philly, but didn't spend enough time in either place to really earn the honor.) D: Paul Coffey (After leaving Edmonton, he never seemed to stay put for more than a couple seasons.) D: Phil Housley (Didn't play long enough anywhere to earn to honor, Buffalo being the closest chance he had) G: Ed Belfour (Being traded to SJ only a few years into his career and in his prime earned him this unless Joseph wins 36+)
