SI.com: MIN should trade Backstrom to DET...

Backstrom's not a good fit, even as a rental. Since the cap has come into place, Holland's strategy has been to find a deal in net for a solid but not necessarily game-stealing goalie (Hasek, Ozzie, Conks) and spending the bulk of his money on position players, figuring that the goalie's not going to face a lot of shots anyway. I don't think Holland's too concerned, barring injury, about his goaltending situation come playoff time.

The Caps might be a better fit...

The Wings would have to move some signifigant salary to make such a trade. Right now, if Backstrom was theoretically dealt to the Wings at the trade deadline, they only have the space to assume $1.7-million of his $3.1-million salary. Detroit would have to move, at minimum, around $1.5-million in non-prorated salary.

(I moved this back to General Discussion as it is NOT a rumor -- just the opinion and speculation on the author's part).

It's interesting to note that Fleischmann was once a Wings prospect. He brought Robert Lang to town, nice to hear he's doing well in Washington.

I seriously doubt we see any major moves at the deadline, if any. I like Backstrom but in all honesty, if we're talking Minnesota goaltending, I'd prefer Harding.

Interesting article, is Muir the same tool that suggested stripping Detroit of its Hockeytown title?

With Conk playing as he has, and Ozzie on the upswing again, I see no reason for a goalie here. Backstrom's good. No doubt about that; we just don't have anything (other than perhaps Lebda) that I'd like to part with right now. Certainly not enough to get it done.

The Caps sound like a good option. They could part ways with Theodore and make room for him. If nothing else, they could sell a lot of tickets to hard-of-hearing, middle-aged women who want to see the Backstrom Boys.

ETA: A thought entered my head. The Wild are trying to hold Gaborik. Maybe they'd be interested in trading for Kopy thinking that Hossa might follow, and Gaborik might stay. Will they have the cap space for that? I don't follow them that closely.

I think they've got about a million left under the cap or more. Yeah....there's room for Kopey.

Gaby's gone after this season though, IMO. I doubt they could offer him anything that would keep him, short of Hossa. And yeah, they'd have to seriously dump someone to get Hossa for next year...and seeing the way DR does things, it'd probably be Backs that would get the axe.

I'm actually not even betting money that Gaby will return to finish out this season. He's set for a late March return, but who knows. He's not happy in MN. And I have a feeling it'll take more than Hossa to get him to stay.

I'm not sure, but it wouldn't surprise me. After last season he wrote an article naming Brian Burke the GM of the year. This guy is an idiot.

Am perfectly content with Osgood and Conklin in net right now, neither are that incompetent for the play just to go way down the crapper and be one of the major reasons the Wings might go downhill, if that happens obviously (not suggesting it is/will, don't want it to, etc.).

we'd probably have to give more than trade value for backstrom to clear capspace. i'm not even sure i'd want to trade in position players/picks what backstrom would be worth, much less additional players just to clear room.

do not want.

Backstrom reportedly wants 5-6M. He'd be a pure rental in Detroit and the only guy we could move to accomodate him would be Filppula, and Filppula is worth much more than a soon-to-be-overpaid rental.

With that said, Nearly 45 games into the season, I still don't feel comfortable with Osgood in net for 4-7 games straight in a playoff series. I realize he backstopped the team to the cup last year, but he has yet to really play a complete solid game this season.

From the way hes played and the team has played in front of him, I think Conklin could pull off a long cup run this year before Osgood could.

I sort of agree. I'm a huge Ozzie fan, and he's been at the least solid with us. IT just seems that the D breaks down more in front of him than in front of Conklin. That being said, there's no way I'd replace Ozzie with anyone sub-Kipper or Luongo levels.

But that's what a goalie tandem is for, right? When one is shaky, replace him.

I'd rather just stick with Ozzy and Conks. Besides if Ozzy does play bad come playoff time, I think Conks can win a cup with this team as a starter. But I think Ozzy will be back in true form come playoff time.
