Chris Osgood- What do we do?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Chris Osgood's .883 save percentage is last in the league.

Chris Osgood's 3.23 GAA is 42nd out of 45 in the league.

There isn't anything Babs can really do except keep throwing Ozzie out there and hope he shakes the funk.

Usually a funk only lasts a few games, but Osgood has been playing bad since the first game of the season. He has no excuse to play bad. And he's right now the worst in the league (well tied for worst in the league) in SV%. And he plays for the Wings! He's been given ample time and rest to fix his game, and he hasn't. Time to rid Conklin (who's a top 10 goalie in this league at least) to the very end, and let Osgood play every 5 games as any back-up would.

It's hard to compare Osgood and Conklin when two different defense groups show up to play for either goalie...

Very true.

Shots against in Ozzie's last 3 GP: 118

Shots against in Ty's last 3 GP: 68

Explain that.

Tired Red Wings team plays solid offense and Osgood's screws it up by giving up 2 breakaway goals.

LOL!!!

Ozzie totally should've cut off those passes to Michalek and Marleau.

Crap why did the PANIC thread that Reilly took a beating in get pulled?!?

This would have been perfect to merge into it.

Seriously, Osgood is Osgood. Those of you expecting him to be anything more than a slightly above average goalie on a night to night basis are fooling yourselves.

Add to that they are at the end of a long road trip, right before the all-star break AND coming off a streak of 3 games in 4 nights where they won 2 out of 3.

OMFG PANIC!!!!!!1111!!!!!eleventy-one111!!!!!!

Yeah, my mistake. Anyways, GAAs are correct, 2.21 for Conklin; 3.23 for Osgood

Conklin stopped 568/616; Osgood 581/658.

Still, Osgood is simply much worse than Conklin so far.

btw I am not "panicking" or whatever some of you like to call it, but Osgood sucks atm.

one of my biggest gripes with ozzy lately is that even the pucks he stops are not being absorbed, he is letting up HUGE rebounds that are going right into the slot and to the side of the net, it's getting pretty bad. I am way more relaxed wtaching games when conks is playing.

In all fairness, Ozzie has been mediocre the first half of the season. I'm not that blind.

However, I really think he has been improving since Jan. 1, but the flaky defense and his GAA paint the wrong picture.

Ty is playing well, no doubt about that.

But let's not make him something he isn't: A bonafide starter or someone has can carry a team far into a postseason.

On every team has been, he's never been the starter.

Osgood has been a descent goalie his whole career with glorified team stats. He is what he is.. if our Defense is not protecting him well enough he's exposed simple as that people! We have 2 good backups for our goalies and let's ride em both! Now Conks on the other hand has shown #1 starter material let's see if it lasts! Conks has pretty awesome reflexes which i love and i think is why he has been playing better! If Ozzie is not in the right position blammo! He's beat. But we can be a very good defensive team and if so Ozzie might get better.

....oh man, this pains me to say, but I have been shown the light. After last nights performance by Osgood, I have changed my Hall of Fame vote to no. Sure there were a couple he had no chance on, but you gotta stop something! I know, I know, it was just one game, but it was probably the biggest game of the season thus far and Osgood doesn't make the saves when needed to. Sure you cannot blame break-away's on a goalie, but you gotta make a big save now and then to give yor team a chance. Wings scored 5 goals, WAY more than enough to win. Osgood a good goalie, but not playing up to his benchmark set last year. If they need to go with Conklin. He has proven to be the better goalie thus far...

What worries me is that:

- no Wings goalie had such terrible stats for almost 15 years

- juicy rebounds are going to be much more dangerous during playoffs

- lots of pressure to come as a stanley cup champion defending goaltender

let's do like with Hasek last year

let him play 1,5 playoffs games, if he goes on sucking play ty

No defense is going to be perfect(we've just been spoiled), mistakes are going to happen and that's when you need your goalie to come up with the important saves, and Ozzy can't do that right now. As people have already said, Osgood gives up too many really big rebounds, which is a bad thing. Another thing I noticed last night that nobody has mentioned was that he gets himself tangled up a lot and then he's slow to recover. I clearly remember two situations where he's tangled up on one side of the net, leaving the other side wide open and needed Lidstrom to bail him out. That shouldn't be happening.

To be honest, I think Conklin's play will drop sharply if he gets too many more games than he's getting now. He's a great backup, but not a starter. Osgood is capable of being a 40-50 game starter if he gets in his groove, and is a proven (hell, even clutch) playoff performer.

I think that is the problem w/ Osgood. He is a great backup/ split time goalie. If you ask him to be a full time starter he has issues with it. It is hard to assess his time as a starter with NYI and STL because those teams weren't too good. He is one of those kind of guys that step up during tough times, and you have to love that. I just don't think that he is a starter who can bring it for 50 plus games. This franchise is in trouble when it comes to goal keeping in the next few years if Howard doesn't become something NHL worthy by next year. Or maybe they take a chance on Larsson or McCollum. Neither of those two are ready. I think that Ozzy is losing his edge and there is very little cap space for a FA.

Conklin = Legace.

Babcock better not make that mistake again.

Osgood has had pleny of playoff failures in his career, too.

Nothing, just like last year whenenver Hasek struggled. You just let things like this play out and do not make a trade or move just for the sake of making a trade or move. They don't have the cap space to make a trade, I highly doubt either doing anything to ship Osgood or Conklin is even anywhere on the radar of an option.

This team is making the playoffs, I'll be concerned about Osgood or Conklin's play starting around April if it isn't up to snuff. I'm fine with both of them.

With a team as good as the Wings, you let things like this play out, be patient, and don't do any big moves just because they might be "exciting".
