Lovin Jiri Fischer 147 Report post Posted February 9, 2009 I have to admit I was pretty worried this season about the Wing's underperformance. But after this past week I am feeling so much better. I'm feeling more confident that we can fix our minor problems before playoff time. I like our chances of repeating much better than I did before. I'm even more confident about keeping Hossa than I was a week ago. And with the warmer weather this week (those of you who live in Michigan), it even feels like playoff time. What do you guys think? Really good to see the infusion of the young guns into the line-up lately. I find myself hoping Chelios, Maltby etc get scratched so I can watch Abdelkader, Leino (and evntually Erikson). If we can sign Hossa before the play-offs long term I think it'll give us a really nice upbeat attitude. Plus if we can keep these young kids going and give them all some more experience I like our chances alot. GO Wings!!!
Z and D for the C 712 Report post Posted February 9, 2009 It really does show that we can turn it on and off nearly at will. Our play even today may not be enough for the stanley cup finals, but it's enough for the first round and by the time we get that far we'll be there for sure
Jericho613 74 Report post Posted February 9, 2009 I agree with you guys. I also think that the adversity we've faced on and off this season is a good thing to prepare for the playoffs.
thedisappearer 291 Report post Posted February 9, 2009 I agree with the positive tone of this thread. All season long, I have been positive, but secretly, I was a little worried. The play this past week has returned the swagger to my walk (as you all know, as I walk, the Wings play. Really. It's a fact.) and reminded me of just how damn much I love my Wings- these Wings. The talk of Hossa signing helped.
Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted February 9, 2009 (edited) I don't mean to be a stickler and ruin the positive energy of this thread, but I still think the Wings have some work to do. That's not to say that I don't agree that they have improved (especially since that 5 game losing streak), but I didn't like how they eased off the gas against Edmonton in the third. Whether your up by six or down by six, allowing three goals in one period is inexcusable. I also think that for much of the game against the Pens, the Wings seemed a bit sluggish, although the Pens also seemed slow. What I'm most pleased about is how balanced the team's scoring seems to be. We're seeing people like Lebda, Draper, Leino, Filppulla (finally) on the scoreboard, as well as players like Dats, Lids, Zetterberg, etc. Conklin looks very composed in net, also. There were very few uncontrolled rebounds these past couple games, something I was surprised the NBC brass noticed and pointed out. Heroes of Hockeytown 694 Report post Posted February 9, 2009 Edmonton was completely terrible, but the Wings clearly were up for the Pittsburgh game, and didn't blow it like last time. Better play across the board, but especially goaltending. I assume the next time the Wings drop two in a row things will get back to normal, don't you worry. And like you said, the weather is warmer and NBC is having games now...it feels like playoff time and I think the guys are feeling it too. The only down side...it's supposed to get cold again next week and snow.

theman19 47 Report post Posted February 9, 2009 Conklin looked real good today. I'd say right now, this team is one small 4th line energy move away from a repeat. I really like the idea of a scott nichol on our 4th line, a Chris neil would be ideal but he makes to much. We never really replaced the drake.
Guest mindfly Report post Posted February 9, 2009 A bit better, not much, but if they continue to play solid, conklin get more starts, get 3-0, 4-1, 5-2, 2-1 results, I will however feel much better

Zion 93 Report post Posted February 9, 2009 The work ethic SHOULD be there. So much of the Stanley Cup run has to do with match-ups and injuries. The Wings had the total opposite situations in their Cup win than they did in '07. They lost Kronwall and Schneider and played 3 very physical teams, while the Quacks snoozed their way through Vancouver and Minnesota. I'm constantly watching to see who's going to finish in 7th, but it's way too early and far too close to call.
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted February 9, 2009 I'll feel better once we go through a consistent stretch of giving up less than 3 goals per game, and killing off penalty after penalty. Yesterday was a good start to that with a shutout.
OsGOD 3 Report post Posted February 9, 2009 Not really replying to the OP at all... I am just amazed at the bi-polar emotions on this site... I mean just 3 games ago people were willing to slit their wrists stating how we are not making it past the 1st round and yadda yadda yadda. Now after THREE... yeah only THREE wins people are once again "releived" get a grip people you are going to give yourselves a heart attack... and before you get that warm fuzzy feeling, please note WE WILL LOSE AGAIN... better get braced for that one The game was fun to watch at the end (boring as hell the rest of it) but yeah it was nice to win again... but should threse three games change the emotions on this board so drastically... i think not. YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted February 9, 2009 Three reasons the Wings are looking better: 1. Datsyuk and Zetterberg back together makes everything seemingly run more smoothly. Theres no point in wasting one of the EuroTwins on Hossa at this point. Hossa is here to score, and he can do that with Draper centering him if he needs to. I dont care whos in or out of the lineup, keep these two guys together. 2. Stuart's absence. Stuart being out has broken up the atrocious 2nd D pairing. Kronwall and Stuart both overacheived in the playoffs, and now they've come back down to earth. Opposite case with Hank and Datsyuk - I dont care whos injured or healthy, Stuart and Kronwall should no longer be paired up. 3. Conklin's ability to play strong under pressure and his rebound control improvement. He saves his best games for big games, and he holds onto the puck, which makes it easier on our D. Through the first half of the season, our rebound control from both goaltenders is/was atrocious, and it made the D look worse that it was/is. ANY defensive unit is going to have trouble tracking shots that ricochet off a goaltenders pad into an unknown direction, potentially onto the stick of an opposing player in key scoring position. Osgood, however, hasnt improved much in this regard. At this point, yes, I feel better, but I dont feel confident. However, if Babs sees the light and starts giving Conklin more starts, permanently reunites Hank and Z (and homer), and permanently splits up Kronwall and Stuart, then I'll be much more confident going into the playoffs than I was a few days ago. redwing_sparty 0 Report post Posted February 9, 2009 im pleased with the fact that they put togeather a complete game agianst pittsburg. I would like to see the solid defensive efforts become a regualr occurance and then i will be ready to say im feeling like this team could repeat. I def think that the young guys bring the energy level up and push the older guys to work a bit harder. We've seen the wings pull solid games out a couple times this year so like i said when this becomes the norm again, then i will be jumping for joy. that all said, its nice to win a few games in a row for a change
