Zion 93 Report post Posted February 26, 2009 I cannot believe the way Pavel Datsyuk is playing. He picked up the physical presence to go along with his dominant two-way game in the playoffs last year, and he just hasn't let his foot off of the gas. He was absolutely hammering people last night... I watch plenty of Sharks games, and I rarely see Doug Murray take hits where his opponent doesn't end up on his butt. Marleau and Boyle were the icing on the cake. I was in awe. I'm not sure if someone made his sandwich the wrong way for lunch, but he was a monster. He can't possibly be considered for the Lady Byng for a 4th straight year... or can he? He picked up (I believe) only his 18th penalty minute last night, but won with only 20 last year... but didn't start putting people on their asses regularly until the post-season started, which has no impact on Lady Byng consideration. Could he possibly pick up the hardware playing this way all season? While I'm much prouder of the Selke trophy that he won, the fact that he did it in conjunction with the Lady Byng really says something about the pure magnificence we're seeing from this fantastic player. I just hope he saves some of this for the playoffs. Is it possible he could take up yet another notch?
Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted February 26, 2009 I don't think legal hits are taken into strong consideration when choosing the Lady B winner. I always looked at it as the best-player-who-plays-within-the-rules-the-most award.
Yzersyukstromberg 0 Report post Posted February 26, 2009 Datsyuk will be a finalist for the Lady Byng again...he's added even more physical presence, without taking any more penalties. Classic gentlemanly player!
tingnoel 4 Report post Posted February 26, 2009 Datsyuk will be a finalist for the Lady Byng again...he's added even more physical presence, without taking any more penalties. Classic gentlemanly player! I agree. I wouldn't be surprised if he wins it again, because he has managed to add another dimension to his game and still rarely see the inside of the penalty box. I think he gets better every time he steps onto the ice.
XxGoWingsxX 0 Report post Posted February 26, 2009 Ohh man, I know. Everytime dats stepped on the ice, I got all excited. Last night was IMO one of his best career regular season games. Not so much points wise but his overall play was stellar.

eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted February 27, 2009 Datsyuk should be a finalist... But Marleau should win it. Better than a point per game, has not missed a game, team captain, and averages 1 minor every 9.833 games. If that description holds out the remaining 23 games, then there's no way anyone should be voting for anyone but Marleau. Tonight's game is included in the 23, of course. Based on his current pace, Marleau is on pace for the following stats at the end of the season if he plays all 82: 82 GP, 46g-42a-88pt, +35, 16 PIM Marleau wins the Lady Byng in a landslide if he has numbers anything like that at the end of the season. David 2 Report post Posted February 27, 2009 (edited) The thing that's amazed me most about Datsyuk is how much he's improved even from Game 6 of the SCF. Nearly every night there's something he does better than ever before, without sacrificing any facet of his game (including gentlemanly play). Truly a remarkable player. Yzerman191 37 Report post Posted February 27, 2009 What makes Marleau a better choice than Datsyuk though? Datsyuk is on pace for the fourth most points in the league (top five in assists), top five in +/- (a useless stat anyways), among the league leaders in takeaways, among the team leaders in hits, and he's on pace for just 24 PIM. Also, he only missed one game, and that was due to a bogus suspension.

How many teams' fans do you think are out there right now that are actively campaigning for one of their players to recieve the Lady Byng? Don't get me wrong, I am proud to see the Wings do so well each year for this award; the Lady Byng was often considered the unofficial runner-up to the Hart, but the thought cracked me up. Kira 451 Report post Posted February 27, 2009 Do you really think he gives a rat's ass about the Byng??? Believe me when I tell you he's got other fish to fry and a hell of a bigger trophy in his sights - his third Stanley Cup. I dare you to tell me I'm wrong on this. Yzerman191 37 Report post Posted February 27, 2009 Yeah, I see your point. Practically every team in the league has a player that could be viewed as a Lady Byng candidate. However, since Datsyuk has won it three times in a row, I figure he's a pretty good fit for the kind of player they're looking for! I still think he's a better candidate than Marleau; they're similar defensively, Datsyuk has the edge in points, assists, and plus and minus, has a similar hit count, he's soft spoken, and he only has a few more PIM. Yeah, the last sentence of the post you quoted was kind of important there. You know, where I said Marleau would win in a landslide if his end-of-season numbers were similar to what I had posted? Just so you know, reading comprehension is important on a message board.
