no this is not a Ty should start over osgood in the playoffs or conks is better thread

i was wondering if there has been any talks of an extension for Conks?

i know we have many upcoming free agents needing to be signed bu Conklin has been nothing short of great this year (not coutning last game but im a goalie and i woulda donebetter than oz and conks..just wasnt their night)

but i think conklin would be a great goalie to have on the roster for a few more years

any news or information on this would be greatly appriciated!

I'm not saying it hasn't happened, but I'm pretty sure Holland's focus is on Hossa and Franzen, and given Conklin's level of play this season he'll probably price himself out of Detroit's range. He's played much better than his $750,000 salary and the money he commands next year will probably force the Red Wings to let him walk.

Conklin has played very well the past two seasons. Who says he wants to stay in Detroit? If he gets a big, multi-year offer from another club, he's taking it.

I think a lot depends on how the goalie thing this year plays out. If Osgood doesn't get his s*** together I don't see him being a wing much longer, and at that point conklin might be a good idea. There are too many variables I think to predict what will happen.

With all the players Holland has to sign yet, I don't think Conklin is anywhere near the top of the radar. I'm sure he's thinking about what to do, but it's not as important to him. Other than that, who knows. I would bet Holland doesn't even consider goalie issues until off season...

I would love to keep him around, mostly becauseI like what I've seen, but also because I don't have a lot of faith in Howard. The money is a huge issue, but I have to wonder what we would get instead of him. Do we go with Howard or do we find some other cheap guy? If it comes down to having to spend some extra cash for a goalie, and Conks is in that price range, I'd rather keep Conks.

I do wonder what will happen IF (semi-big IF) Conks ends up being our goalie for the playoffs. IF he starts at some point in the playoffs and the Wings win with him... too many IF's too worry about I guess.

Sssschinderella Schtory....game scheven, Schtanley Cup Finalzzh.... Detroit Red Wingshzz up by one late in the 3rd, Ty Conklin in goal... Schimone Gagne on a break away...dekes, ssschootchs high blocker schyde, HE SCHTYONES HIM!

There are teams that have deeper goaltending issues than the Red Wings do. Ozzie is a proven winner and he should turn his game around. Howard and Larsson are both potential NHL claiber goalies. Conklin has played his way right out of price range especially with the chaotic FAs Detroit has to deal with. Ottawa could be a good fit for Conks. Even a return to Edmonton could be possible given that Roloson's contract is up and Deslauriers does not seem ready to step in as a starter. Personally, I love Jimmy Howard and I hope he can become our starter at somepoint over the next 2 years.

i agree with you for the most part. the only thing is people have been known to take pay cuts to stay in or come to detroit but like everyone says who knows

i do agree he may have a better shot at money and playing time else where

tho hes quickly become a favorite player of mine

ill root for him wherever he goes tho id love to see him stay

who knows maybe he love sit here and takes a discount

but if it came down to keeping both franzen and hossa and letting conklin walk

or keeping conks but either mule or hossa have to leave

id rather keep hos and franzen because we have other options at goalie

but gotta love conks

Ya, but you fail to mention the teams who have worse goaltending issues (would like to point out Ozzie is 42nd in the league in GAA, and almost just as bad in SV%) aren't looking to make a competitve run at the Stanley Cup. Howard is not the answer, Conklin may be -- I think it's to early to tell, and Osgood, well, I like better coming off the bench (like last year) -- and I am hesitant to say I am confident regardless of the outcome this year as naming him our starter for next year.

Goaltending is an issue -- it isn't an end of the world issue, or one that is of the highest priority -- I believe re-signing Hossa is number one on that list -- but it is something the Wings will have to take a look at in the offseason and unfortunately I believe some decisions/moves will have to be made.

I am trying to think of when was the last time the Wings rode ONE goalie through the entire season and through the playoffs and WON the cup?

07-08: Hasek and Osgood split time in the regular season, Osgood took over in the playoffs and won the cup

01-02: Hasek played 65 games in the regular season, started the playoffs and won the cup

97-98: Osgood played 64 games in the regular season, started the playoffs and won the cup

96-97: Osgood played a majority in the regular season, but Vernon started the playoffs and won the cup

So the answer is 01'-02' and two of the last four. :D

Wonder what Hasek's up to in 2010 other than backing up Vokoun in the Olympics.

League minimum boys and girls!

:scared: i don't think i could watch the wings if we signed hasek next season. my heart simply could not take even half a season's worth of him in goal. oh, the nerves!

It's important to note that the majority of NHL teams number one goalie, no matter who he is only start 55-65 games a year. It is quite normal the "the backup" sees 20-30 starts in a full season regardless of how the number one is playing.

For example, this past year, when signing Conklin, Kenny Holland promised him 30 starts. This was months before the reg. season and Ozzies problems began. Or last year, 2007-08, some examples: Backstrom only started 57 for Minnesota, Cam Ward started 67 in Carolina, Toskala 64 in Toronto, Turco 60 in Dallas, and so on. Of course there are your exceptions to this rule, like Brodeur (started 77 games last year), Miller (75 starts last year), and Luongo (73 starts last year). However more often then not you see something of a 55/27 ish split between the started and number 2 guy throughout the regular season.

In 1996-97 Ozzie had the better GAA (2.30) and more wins (23) in the regular season and started 47 of the 82 regular season games. But in the playoffs Vernon was our go to guy. The eventual Conn Cmythe winner went 16-4 and a 1.76 GAA in the playoffs.

In 1997-98 Osgood played in 64 regular season games and all 22 playoff games. (Hodson was the backup this year and started 21 games in the regular season.)

In 2001-02 Hasek started 65 regular season games and 23 playoff games.
