Its one thing to play back to back games in a tournament, where everyone will be as tired as you are, but flying from LA to Trashville... Thats at least a 3hour flight plus whatever time it takes to get undressed, loaded up and off to the airport. Its a bunch of crap and shouldn't be happening.

As nice as it sounds, it would be a logistical nightmare. Consider the fact that teams share venues or use the arena for other things, then add the trips out west (or east, if you're looking at western teams) and try to work around the host teams' schedules.

Probably the best they could do would be to attempt to eliminate back to backs where travel is involved. Playing at home 2 nights in a row isn't nearly as bad as playing in 2 different time zones on consecutive nights.

Are you referring to the game when the Wings played LA, at home, in Detroit. Then went to Nashville the next day? Or maybe did this happen in NHL09 on your XBOX360? The Wings are always near the top with back-to-back games played. It happens every year. It doesn't effect them.

We have a lot of Wings fans at my office and we talk about the schedule constantly.

We've come up with 2 reasons why the Wings, and hardly anyone else, play back-to-back games constantly all season:

1. The NHL schedulers buy up all the crack cocaine on the eastern seaboard and smoke it together all in one night, and that same night they draw up the NHL schedule for that year.

2. It's a Gary Bettman/Sidney Crosby afterglow conspiracy theory.

In reality though, the Wings season looks like:

Detroit Red Wings 39642 miles traveled 16 back-to-back games

Around the league:

most miles:

San Jose Sharks 56111 miles traveled 14 back-to-back games

most back-to-back games

Columbus Blue Jackets 41305 miles traveled 20 back-to-back games

least miles:

New York Islanders 28126 miles traveled 17 back-to-back games

least back-to-back games

Colorado Avalanche 47889 miles traveled 8 back-to-back games

With the disparity of these stats, I'd think it fully supports my reason #1 statement above...though I do not doubt #2 happens also.

And about what 55fan said, I'm not sure how the league actually writes the schedule, but it seems to me that the league could put some kind of pressure on these venues to make NHL games a priority in said venues.

BTW, I got my research numbers from the NHL Super Schedule @:

I could have been wrong, but I think I read somewhere that the teams present to the league, prior to the schedule being made, a list of dates they can't host .

I don't remember where I read it, so it may well have been a post on this site be someone who was fluffing. It did seem to make sense at the time...

I'm not sure if we play more or less back to backs than other teams but here's how we've fared on our 2nd game in back to backs:

at CHI W

at SJ L

at FLA W

at BOS L

at PHO W

at COL OTL

at LA W

at PIT W

at COL L

at MIN L

at NSH L

overall: 4-5-1

I don't have an issue with it so much as I do the discrepancy in the number of back to backs between teams. If one team has 15, and another has 8, thats a sizeable difference that results in a palpable advantage. No to mention, the traveling we have to do yearly as well.

You think this is bad? How about minor league games where it's not uncommon to play games on 3 straight nights on bus travel.

As for back-to-backers in the professionals, it is a league wide problem, not just a Red Wings problem/issue.

Dont forget we are an eastern time zone team playing in the West. We probably travel more miles than most

Someone mentioned the mileage above; we're not too horrible, just have alot of back to backs. I don't think it's possible to have an 82-game season without back-to-backs, and if they didn't, the NHL would probably be losing money, no money = no NHL = no more Wings.

On the other hand, the number of back to backs we have could theoretically improve our stamina and give us a better shot at the cup. Kind of like a strength-building exercise where you work to exhaustion, recover and get stronger.

When did we travel from LA to Nashville b2b? i think most of the times they make perfect sense

B2B 1: HOME (ATLANTA) / CHICAGO

B2B 2: ANAHEIM / SAN JOSE

B2B 3: TAMPA BAY / FLORIDA

B2B 4: HOME (COLUMBUS) / BOSTON

B2B 5: DALLAS / PHOENIX

B2B 6: NASHVILLE / COLORADO

B2B 7: ANAHEIM / LOS ANGELES

B2B 8: HOME (MINNESOTA) / COLUMBUS

B2B 9: HOME (ANAHEIM) / MINNESOTA

B2B 10: HOME (LOS ANGELES) / NASHVILLE <-- this must be the game but yeah I was that JLA vs LA...

B2B 11: ST. LOUIS / COLORADO

B2B 12: ST. LOUIS / COLUMBUS

B2B 13: CALGARY / EDMONTON

B2B 14: HOME (MINNESOTA) / BUFFALO

B2B 15: HOME (CHICAGO) / CHICAGO

that hardly seems rough?!

i voted no because i love hockey and b2b games means more consitant hockey!!!

Yes - it is impossible and improbable to do away with all back to backs since many teams with arena sharing etc. But it wouldn't be so hard to limit them - or have a small range that each team may get - so you don't have the 15 vs. 8 b2bs.

A bad example was last fall when we played LA, night off, Ana one night, then flew to SJ for the b2b. Usually it is Ana and LA b2b. We also almost ALWAYS get the Avs in their barn on the second of b2b nights. It's a conspiracy to help them beat us!

Minor gripe - you get what you get with the schedule. How about making the East teams travel equal miles? That would mean dividing the league evenly with Eastern and Western teams in two new conferences - sort of like the NFL and MLB. It'll never happen - but would love to see how those East pansies would like that.....

One way to look at it:

The DRW have played 12 pairs of games on consecutive days so far this season (16 pairs and 32 games for the season); 24 games, worth 48 points. They have picked up 32 points, broken down into:

4 Points: 5 times

3 points: 0 times

2 points: 5 times

1 point: 2 times.

Thus far, they have not come out of any pairs of these games without at least 1 point. The total makes for a point percentage in these games of 0.667; 2 out of every 3 points available. That glass is still more than half full.

An oddity of these games is that in each case this season, the second game of the pair is on the road.
