40#1Fan 0 Report post Posted April 12, 2009 http://www.edmontonjournal.com/sports/More...8701/story.html - It’s no surprise that Johan Franzen is getting an 11-year, $43-million contract that runs until 2021 to spread out the cap hit ($1 million the final two, years when he’ll be 38 and 39 years old). Same story with Henrik Zetterberg ($6.1 million cap hit over 12 years). They may eventually close that loophole, but Wings’ GM Ken Holland is simply playing by the rules now. And Franzen’s average cap hit of $3.95 million is actually close to what a veteran agent thought he’d get last week. Franzen will get $36 million in the first seven years, starting at $5.5 million next season — his salary more in tune with his tremendous goal-scoring ability. “Let’s see now, we have an 11-year contract and a 12-year contract, so I guess Marian will take 10 or 13 years,†laughed Hossa’s agent Ritch Winter, who talked to Holland about numbers Saturday, although Holland won't be able to sign Hossa until June because of their cap situation. Hossa is going nowhere. His cap hit will be in the $6-million range. “I will tell you this: despite what people are saying, the salary cap in Detroit will definitely be no impediment to Marian signing there,†said Winter. 55fan 5,133 Report post Posted April 12, 2009 Star light, star bright. First star I see tonight... I wish we get Hossa too. Wonder what this means for Huds, Sammy, and Koko.
puckloo39 5,686 Report post Posted April 12, 2009 this would make me extremely happy, if true. We'll see in June, but I hope they can get this done. Love the Hoss!

hoogs 8 Report post Posted April 12, 2009 Man locking up Zetts, Dats, Mule, Flip and Hossa long term would be almost unfair. That pretty much gives us the best top 2 lines in hockey for awhile.
Gordie Howe hat trick 110 Report post Posted April 12, 2009 I'd take Huds over Hossa any day...Huds brings more personality to the team, and with as much talent as we have Hossa could ride the bench and we would still win.

dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted April 12, 2009 Could we afford to sign Hossa for 6 mil while "only" losing Hudler, Filppula, Sammy, Lebda, Cheli and Conklin? Giving us this team next season: Homer-Dats-Hossa Leino-Z-Franzen Kopecky-Helm-Cleary Abdelkader-Draper-Maltby Lids-Raffy Kronner-Stuart Lilja-Ericsson Ozzie Howard (Larsson)
XxGoWingsxX 0 Report post Posted April 12, 2009 (edited) Well here's how I see it....we keep hoss and at LEAST sammy and fil/huds has to go. I can see us somehow squeezing huds in there somewhere while sending fil away because he's overpaid for the amount of production he's giving us. Not saying he's not a great player but he's just overshadowed by quite a few guys on this team and IN grand rapids that make less money...helm/leino both come to mind. It's pretty much a lock that cheli won't be a part of this team next year (on the ice anyway) but may coach, or mentor in grand rapids. I'm pretty confident that what I just said is realistic but its just my opinion. That leaves us with yet another messed up goalie situation. Ozzy has looked better of late and conklin'Ls play has dropped significantly. Whether thats because he's sat alot lately or his head is in the clouds, IDK but....if ozzie performs well in the stretch, He'll remain the starter and I could see us trading away howard for another cheap, rental goaltender...just my 2 pennies Oh yeah, also i can see lebda being gone and with him and cheli out of the picture, big E comes in full time. I have a feeling that either one, or both of draper/maltby will be finished after this year which will help a LITTLE toward cap but not much. It's gonna be a tight fit but i think we can do it. The only thing that worries me bout bein so close to the cap is injuries...we need that extra cap space to make a call up if needed Edited April 12, 2009 by XxGoWingsxX

Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted April 12, 2009 The more I think about this, the more I think that it would be better for the Wings to let Hossa walk, as much as it pains me to say it. Hossa's 6M approx. caphit could be used to secure multiple lesser, yet still solid players in our team. A good percentage of Hudler, Sammy, Kopecky, Leino, Ericcson, Conklin, Lebda, Chelios could be retained in the lineup next year without Hossa, and that depth is what wins Stanley cups. I haven't crunched the numbers in a while, but I do recall that having Hossa and Franzen for modest amounts leaves practically no extra money. Someone might want to double check that to be sure. Another thing that I've been thinking about is how the Wings are going to look ten years from now with 16M against the cap for 38-40 year old Zetterberg, Hossa, and Franzen, all of which certain degrees of health issues. I'm almost worried (and this will sound paranoid) that Holland is making one final push to secure the next three four years and retire, leaving the inherited mess-to-be with the next guy. Although I'm sure I wouldn't be thinking this had he not joked that the day Lids retires is the day he retires. Anyway, this is Holland we're talking about, so I'm sure something unbelievable will happen where he ends up keeping the entire roster plus bringing in Broduer for another Stanley Cup, then locking everyone up longterm for 11 years. Rice 42 Report post Posted April 12, 2009 According to this poster at HFBoards: Bob Stauffer in Edmonton is saying that he can all but guarantee that Hossa will not be on the market in July. He has proven time and time again that his sources are reliable. I'm guessing that his source is Hossa's agent Rich Winter. He was a regular guest in Stauffer's radio show. Stauffer is saying that it's a real sweet deal that will leave the Wings room for a goaltender. He's saying the deal will be done sooner rather than later. titanium2 867 Report post Posted April 12, 2009 According to this poster at HFBoards: Leave room for a goaltender? Now I'm really skeptical. They barely have enough cap space to sign Hossa as it is. Plus, was it his agent who said "Hossa is going nowhere" or was it the writer? It's a big difference to me.
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted April 12, 2009 That's sounds promising, but room for a goaltender? Could Hossa really give us an extra 1.5-3 million (Wings money for a goalie) in extra space? It almost seems unfair
Z and D for the C 712 Report post Posted April 12, 2009 Note that his agent didn't say he was going nowhere. It's the author who asid that. Although Hossa's agent does allude to him staying.

XxGoWingsxX 0 Report post Posted April 12, 2009 Huds can't take a hit. Every time he's in the corner with the puck he never comes out. THIS!!! and also, huds isn't as defensively reliable as hossa. Sure huds can score and would be a bargain but he's lacking the 2 way game
Casey 145 Report post Posted April 12, 2009 That's sounds promising, but room for a goaltender? Could Hossa really give us an extra 1.5-3 million (Wings money for a goalie) in extra space? It almost seems unfair There's nothing saying that Hossa couldn't sign for veteran minimum, if he wanted. Never going to happen, but legal. I can see Cheli, McCarty and Maltby (maybe Draper too) retiring, and Lebda being waived or traded. That frees up some cash, at least.
Hockeytown0001 7,652 Report post Posted April 12, 2009 (edited) I have to admit, I'd be SEETHING if I was a fan of another team right now Signing Hank for 12 years, signing Mule for 11 years, and now likely about to sign Hossa for long term? I vote we all take a moment to bow our heads and thank the Lord for the genius that is Kenny Holland, and that the Red Wings continue to be the envy of the rest of the NHL Edited April 12, 2009 by Hockeytown0001
