Power Play Goalie

I know from experience that there are only a couple scenarios that it would be a good idea for a goalie to make a strech pass up the ice. The two scenarios are if a player from the other team is coming down on you or when the other team goes for a line change. Otherwise it isn't smart to move it up that quickly because the defense will jump on the player or puck and send it back down. Another reason why it would be a good idea is because the wings switch units after a minute and you need to allow the second unit to get set up.

Am I the only person that realizes Turco is highly overrated?

No, everyone but the OP realizes this!

That's the style of PP the Wings play man... They set her up in their own zone and work it into the opposings.... they don't run n gun like Atlanta and some others....

Exactly

And if you have to rely on your goalie to help on the PP, you have bigger problems to worry about.

I'm more concerned about the penalty kill. What is going on with it? Did moving the blueline back really make it that much more difficult?

That would be the lack of Pain Train you're noticing. Nobody blocks shots like he did.

The game has changed...goalies can't go into the corners and get the puck anymore...if you watched hockey prior to the lockout...Osgood was a lot more active stick handler. Osgood's only option at this point is to T the puck up behind the net for his D men. If he plays it up the boards he runs the risk of the opposing team getting to the puck and firing it on net before he can get back in position.

Oh the rare occasions that the puck isn't coming down fast enough or if there isn't a Wings defensemen in the vacinity and Osgood feels a scoring chance might result if he doesn't play the puck he will leave his crease and bat it into the corner or make a pass to the neutral zone.

I would just like to see someone who could get the puck up ice quicker on the PP. Osgood always leaves it behind the net. He rarely skates out of his crease and gets it up ice quickly so they can get back in the attacking zone. Then Lidstrom and Rafalski have to skate all the way back behind the net. It would be nice to see a goalie allow the Wings 10-15 more seconds per power play in the attacking zone because he was a good puck handler.

After the game today they asked ozzie what babs told him to do and he said "stay in the paint and play big" we dont need him skating around out side the crease bad things will happen.

OP: You think we should replace Osgood solely in order to get someone who can get the puck up the ice on the PK?

there are times when he does move it up the ice. i would guess that a lot of the times you're thinking about, the wings were changing their PP unit (as is often the change after a clear) and don't have someone just cherry-picking at the blueline. and i'm sure we'd ALL rather him just leave it behind the net than make a bad pass (i've never been a goalie, but i'm assuming those paddles aren't exactly designed for marskmanship) and give up a shortie.

yes, if i was building a super-team made of fake players in a lab with no salary cap, i'd get somebody with better puck-handling skills. for now i'll settle for one that can win us the stanley cup.

Ozzie is one of the few goalies to every score a goal. He can handle the puck fine. Babcock doesn't want him to play the puck.

I read in the Freep the other day... Ozzie was asked what advice Babcock gives him, and Ozzie said: "Stay out of the paint, be big in goal" Babs doesn't want Ozzie to go wandering off like Patrick Roy. He wants Ozzie close in goal and filling it up as much as possible.

Didn't Knabby try to the play the puck yesterday and have some trouble?

Yes for two reasons:

1 He almost skated into the dreaded "No Pucky for Goalie" here zone.

2 He almost handed it to a Wing with NO ONE in net!

OZZIE IS FINE!

Sammy is fine!

Lebda is Fine!

Cleary is Super Fine!

Relax, watch the games, root for all of the guys in the Winged wheel, have a beer, and ENJOY THE WINGS BEING THE BEST TEAM IN HOCKEY SINCE THE 80's!

I knew the answer, but wanted someone else to type it out so various people on the forum could read it for themselves.

Ok. Next time I better just start a thread called "Everything is perfect with the Wings." Apparently, Datsyuk and Hossa are the only Red Wings that have improvements to make. Let me rephrase my point: When Chris Osgood is not the starting goaltender for the Detroit Red Wings, would you like to have a goalie who could handle the puck a bit better? I think it would be beneficial to our power play, as it could increase the time we spend in the attacking zone by decreasing the time our defensemen spend chasing the puck. By no means am I unhappy with today's Red Wings and by no means am I bashing Chris Osgood. I just am raising a DISCUSSION QUESTION. Now start flaming again.

Ozzie will at times(did it in the Ducks series I believe once or twice) makes a quick outlet pass, to the other teams blueline, where a wide open team mate is, but very rarely will he do it if it could in any way result in a turnover.

As posted here by others, Babs has told Ozzie, stay in the paint and stop the puck, in fact Ozzie brought it up in the post game yesterday.

What more would you like him to do?

The team is winning, in the post season the only thing that matters is 16 Wins, doesn't matter if Ozzie scores all the goals and the Wings go 16-15 in 1-0 games. Doesn't matter if Dats scores 100 goals in 16 games, or 0 goals in 16 games.

What matters is W's.
