Psychlone 0 Report post Posted May 28, 2009 As a Pens fan, I have mixed feelings about facing the Red Wings again this year. There are a lot of cool storylines but at the end of the day I want my team to win and I'm not going to lie, I would have preferred to face a team that I KNOW the Penguins can beat. Just curious who you guys would have liked to have seen the Wings matched up against in the East?
HadThomasVokounOnFortSt 878 Report post Posted May 28, 2009 I am sure they were looking to play the Hurricanes, they would of been easier series.
Wombat 26 Report post Posted May 28, 2009 Same plan... I would have preferred a team that would be easier to beat. the Pens are for real and will be a big challenge. On the other hand, it would have been really cool to play Boston... tough team, but an intriguing O6 matchup.

liloz 0 Report post Posted May 28, 2009 Quite frankly anyone but the Pen's. AND not because I am afraid of them. I am just SICK TO DEATH of hearing about Crosby!

Konnan511 1,736 Report post Posted May 28, 2009 Probably the best thing for the NHL was a Pens-Wings rematch. The NHL's poster child can now get his revenge against the Yankees of the NHL. The TV ratings for this series is going to be incredible. Personally, I wanted to see Detroiut vs an Original 6 team. I knew Montreal was going to flop in the playoffs but I thought with Boston's solid goaltending and defense they would pull through, but their pathetic offense really let me down. UKWING 8 Report post Posted May 28, 2009 (edited) definitely the canes. the main reason being their awful PP as the wings achilles heel has been their PK and if a team is going to beat them they need to take advantage of this. the canes would not have been able to like the pens will. also, if the canes had somehow managed to squeek past the pens then they would have been even more exhausted and been a pushover. failing that it would have been nice to see the bruins make it to the ECF and watch them and the pens beat each other up over 7 games. but i have to say that a matchup against a confident, healthy, fresh and hungry pens team is about the last thing i wanted - especially if lids is not back. Good stuff guys, yeah Boston ended up being a major disappointment for sure. I think a Caps Red Wings series would have been fun to watch. It's a shame really the Pens Caps should have really played in the EC final, the Canes ended up being pretty lifeless.
HkyTwn 5 Report post Posted May 28, 2009 In reality probably someone like the Caps or the Canes, but for excitement I kind of wanted to see Boston. Not the Pens. I'm just sorta sick of them

ChitownWingsfan 54 Report post Posted May 28, 2009 I was going for the Caps simply because their my second team, after that the Canes but the Pens took care of both of them . . .
xtrememachine1 795 Report post Posted May 28, 2009 I was going for the Caps simply because their my second team, after that the Canes but the Pens took care of both of them . . . It may SEEM like a cool idea, but speaking from experience, Wings vs your second favorite team is agonizing to watch. I would have rather seen the Wings play anyone other than the Pens simply so I don't have to hear all the anti-Wings crap around the clock.
TheCaptain19 49 Report post Posted May 28, 2009 the boston bruins.
egroen 384 Report post Posted May 28, 2009 (edited) I was hoping for anyone but Boston. The Wings have shown time and time again that they can contain a high-flying offense, but if they can't score themselves, it can get ugly quick. Teams that have beaten the Wings or given them a lot of problems have had great defense and a hot goalie -- I thought Boston would be capable of both. Just curious who you guys would have liked to have seen the Wings matched up against in the East? Sounds like any fan or player in a title game. You would want to face the team that you can beat rather than the team that could beat you. Thats not a bad thing, its just human nature. I have been on countless hockey teams and have done the same thing. In a title game, I would rather face a weaker team than a stronger one. That being said, when it comes to sports, I would rather see the two best teams duke it out in the playoffs for the championship. Adds into the excitement and it cements your team into history. As it stands, this series is going to be remembered because of the skill and hard work these two teams have. It isn't like Detroit is going up against the 8th seeded Canadians with all sorts of problems. These are truly the top teams in their respective divisions. In order to be the best, you have to beat the best.
b.shanafan14 733 Report post Posted May 28, 2009 I would have preferred to face the 'Canes, easier team, slightly less depth, but more than anything, much less media hype. That said, Red Wings will take all comers, and you don't get the Cup hoping to avoid the hardest teams. Red Wings beat the Ducks in 7, I don't see another team beating the Red Wings in a 7 game series unless the injuries to Lidstrom, Datsyuk, Ericsson, and Draper (along with Lilja and Kopecky, WOW) really come into play. jollymania 162 Report post Posted May 28, 2009 probably boston or ny for original 6, but the wings match up well against anyone in the east
Ms_Hockey 0 Report post Posted May 28, 2009 I'm okay with facing the Pens. I think the previous matchup will make for quite an emotional rollercoaster.. and what's better than that? (Other than lifting the Cup, of course!) I was semi-hoping for a Detroit/Boston matchup.. but I'm happy with the one we've got.

Just curious who you guys would have liked to have seen the Wings matched up against in the East? Great topic. Well I'm not happy facing Malkin and Crosby with 28pts each in only 17 games. Plus we already faced you guys and frankly, a loss is worse against you because it allows Pens fans to downplay last year's victory by saying 'we're even'... I know that sounds silly, but I'm sure that's what would happen. I'd rather we were facing: Washington, New York, Montreal, Philadelphia, Carolina. All those teams feel more beatable than the Pens do right now. At this point Crosby and the Pens have an axe to grind and the Wings are the people who made their suffer miserable. The emotional advantage is most definitely the Pens. I definitely believe in the Wings, I just don't like how far the emotional edge is tipped in Pittsburgh's favour. In the end this will come down to whether Lidstrom and Datsyuk can recover their form by Saturday. No Lidstrom, no cup.
The_Cub 0 Report post Posted May 28, 2009 This is probably the best for promoting the sport. You've got the a ton of big names and good story lines to go along with it. Sure as a Wings fan I'd preferred some team the Wings could steam roll, but this should be more entertaining.
Chris L 0 Report post Posted May 28, 2009 To tell you the truth, I was expecting a slam-bam-thank-you-mam series with Boston. I thought they were going to tear the East up, boy was I shocked. After that, I wanted to face the 'Canes. Only because the media hype over Malkin and Crosby is going to be a barf fest. But then, as Wings fans, we're used to being the unchosen ones. Every year we've won, we've been counted out going into the Finals for one reason or another. Its annoying, but its what it is, year in, year out.
Red4wings4life 0 Report post Posted May 28, 2009 I would have loved to see Boston and that is what I was hoping for but the Pens are good too. I am not worried about the Pens but I know it will be a good series unless the Wings smoke them in game 1, then it will be a short series. The Wings need the Captain back (Nick) and we will be okay... Sure I want Dats back too but I would much rather have Lidstrom back. I think that the series will be alot better then most Wings fans are willing to admit but logic says that Wings will win again. Pens are not that much different then last year, they lost alot of the playoff "grit" players they had last year.
