4th Line

4th Line carried us through the 3rd period tonight. Abdelkader getting his 1st career goal is huge and Leino and Maltby always dug hard in the corners. Helm isn't a 4th liner but he had a great game too! With Z playing "Crosby Spy", lets hope these guys can keep up the good work!!

Who do you take out if Draper can come back. Tough call.

Leino. Though he assisted on the goal, I was screaming for more out of him tonight. Draper's face-offs and corner work will help the Maltby-Abdelkader line really shine.

What the 4th line managed to do in the third period is mind boggling. Scored a goal, seemed to be out there every other shift, and frustrated Crosby to the point of him starting s*** with Maltby. If the Wings can go on to win the Cup, I believe THAT period will be one of the key reasons. It was THAT huge.

What makes playing Detroit in the playoffs so frustrating is the never ending line of guys that seem to step up and play great. Hats off to the 4th line, well deserved props to them tonight.

I laughed when Crosby gave Malts a "love tap" after the final horn. Just goes to show how effect Malts was tonight. Everytime the 4th line was out there they were visible - in a good way

Congrats on the goal Abdelkader!! Home-grown talent :siren:

See that's what we mean when we say depth. Pens try and be sneaky and put Crosby out there against our 4th line. Well sorry you still suck.

They're not trying to be sneaky, they've been doing that since Game 7 against Washington. Whatever gives Crosby and Malkin more ice time. Problem is, it gets Hank out there more often too. And was it my imagination or did I see Helm shadowing Malkin at least twice during this game?

The 4th line was absolutely tremendous. They saved their best till the third period. I was amazed at how much ice-time they seemed to be getting in the third, maybe it was reward for their play, maybe it was trying to preserve the big guns for tonight’s Game 2, maybe it was a bit of both.

They were great. Abdelkader is going to be an outstanding player for this hockey club; I was thrilled to see him score. Leino has been really impressive, cycles the puck well and is very tough to take the puck from. As for Maltby, one of the best games I’ve seen him play for quite some time. The entire 4th line was great and it was much needed because our big guns played a lot last night and any extra rest they got was crucial.

Great game by the 4th line. I also agree that Maltby played an awesome game, a new level from the regular season for sure. It's for this reason that the Pens won't be able to outlast us in a 7 game series..... Our bench is waaay to deep for them and any other team. The biggest challenge we've faced so far was in Anaheim, that Getzlaf line might be the toughest in the league to play against right now but even they were sidelined in the long run!

I was arguing this with some friends not too long ago. All playoffs long Pens have been double shifting Crosby and Malkin, tossing them out one at a time with the 3rd or 4th line. My argument was that.....if they try that against Detroit, they're in for a huge surprise.

Maltby knew he was going to be skating against Crosby when they could sneak him in there. He raised his game to answer that. Amusing, that our 4th line has two players fresh from Grand Rapids, and still managed to shut down Crosby/Malkin.

I love the way Detroit does it. They cultivate young players from the lowest level, slip them into a few games to test their mettle, and send them off to practice in the lower leagues some more. Datsyuk was one of these, Zetterberg, Hudler, Kronwall, Fillpula, and so on. Most of our team is "all original", and has played all or most of their careers with Detroit. Ever notice how when we trade in a new guy they never really seem to "fit", and it's always the players we raised ourselves that do the most ownage?

Between Holland, Babcock, and hell even Bowman and Yzerman in the wings.....we have an amazingly talented core of recruiters. It's not "luck" that we suck Datsyuk's and Zetterberg's out of the latter rounds. Detroit doesn't look for the best guys in the draft, they look for the guys that will fill critical roles with a little development. Detroit finds potential, and turns it into talent. And it keeps us chugging along full speed year after year.

When even you're 4th line is highly valuable, you know you're doing something right.
