Aussie_Wing 354 Report post Posted June 20, 2009 Link Holland said Chris Chelios was on the flight to Vegas with him Wednesday. "We had a good visit," Holland said. "He's going to come in and see me Monday or Tuesday, and we'll probably address his situation with the Red Wings at that time." Surely he's done as a Wing? What possible benefit could there be of re-signing him for another year? I say he should retire and serve as an assistant coach, mentoring the young defencemen. 55fan 5,133 Report post Posted June 20, 2009 Cheli has pretty much said he won't be back here but will go elsewhere if someone will take him. He'd like to stay; there just isn't room for him.
dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted June 20, 2009 Maybe the Lilja situation opens up for Cheli staying another year? But I really doubt he'll stay, they've been saying all year that this is his last season with the Wings.
Zion 93 Report post Posted June 20, 2009 Maybe the Lilja situation opens up for Cheli staying another year? But I really doubt he'll stay, they've been saying all year that this is his last season with the Wings. Who is "they"? I have not heard this, though I think it is just common sense at this point. The meeting will probably be about a coaching position, perhaps replacing McCrimmon?

VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted June 20, 2009 come on, NOBODY would resign chelios... Why not? He's still capable of playing. He's certainly a good third pairing on a team lackign in defensive depth, and he's cheap and provides veteran leadership. He's been nothing but solid for us when we called him up and would be an asset to any team in need of settling down their defense. Someoen would sign him. 55fan 5,133 Report post Posted June 20, 2009 No one can resign Cheli. Only Cheli can resign, and only before the 30th of June. After that, he is a UFA. We can re-sign him. Other teams can sign him. Chicago and Montreal can, technically re-sign him since he was once signed there, but only Cheli can resign and he has said that he wishes to re-sign. I can see him going to the Kings. It's near home (California home, that is) and they could use a good veteran d-man. Say good night, Gracie.

Mors 201 Report post Posted June 20, 2009 I'd like to see Chelios brought on as a defensive coach, although it doesn't sound like that's what he's hoping for.

Dimaline312000 51 Report post Posted June 21, 2009 I personally wish he would retire because I'd love for him to retire as a Red Wing but it's up to him. I just hope the Wings don't get soft and sign him again if he doesn't retire. I don't know any team in the NHL these days that are going to want a part-time Defensman because that is what he has become this past season for the Red Wings. Best of luck to Chelly in whatever he decides to do.
