NGKEIB 32 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 I live in NY, I get to see Blair Betts play all the time. He is a guy the wings need to go after. He's a great penalty killer and a hard worker. Given how bad our PK was last year, I say make an offer to Betts. The guy can skate and always makes the right play. Do you have any idea what his injury situation is after the Brashear hit? I haven't found anything... He would be cheap as well, he only got like 600k last year. I'd love him.
TheDetroitRedWings 286 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 (edited) Detroit is apparently going after every free agent on the market. As long as we get a grinder (Grier) I could care less who else we pick up. Exactly. Edited July 30, 2009 by TheDetroitRedWings

RusDRW 155 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 These rumors scare me to death. Williams, now Sykora and while Williams is simply bad, Sykora is absolutely useless. Look that even Pens decided to bench him and I can't even imagine Sykora playing for Babcock. Moreover, both are not worth more than 1M per year. Best scenario for us is to somehow get Prospal + someone out of Grier, Malhotra, Peca, Betts. Worst case is these two pylons.
cjm502 165 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 Betts is in his prime putting up 10 points in 81 games. I will pass, we dont need a grindet that bad. Malhotra and Shanny would be good. C'mon, Shanny is capable of 40 points for league minimum!
WhiteLightning91 105 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 So let me get this straight: Our two biggest weaknesses last year were PK and defense. How on Earth would Sykora and Williams help in either case? I realize we lost offense with the departures of Hossa, Sammy, and Hudler. But I'm not concerned about scoring goals with our depth. I'm concerned with our bottom 6 being defensively responsible this year, as opposed to last year, and our PK being back to where it was consistently one of the best in the league. Snazzy 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 I think most of these rumors that people are posting on LGWs is more of an "author's opinion" to get more clicks to their website. I hold no legitimacy to any of these rumors being posted on LGWs left and right multiple times per day. I think if Kenny had a hardon to sign someone, he would have done so by now. I seriously think Holland won't be doing any signings for the Red Wings roster until after camp.
wmubronco420 25 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 (edited) Sykora would be great here, if he's able to stay healthy for the whole year he has the potential to score thirty goals. I would be absolutely thrilled if we got sykora and Grier, i just hope its not sykora and williams that would be awful. I'm starting to think its just a general rule around here to overreact and instantly hate every player the wings are interested in. wmubronco420 25 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 I fixed the spelling mistakes for you Though i dont usually like your overly sarcastic posts i completely agree with you on this one. We need a goal scorer, like i said in my first post Greir and Sykora would be perfect IMO.

kook_10 1,705 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 (edited) NOOOO. Why would the Wings go for a scorer?! They only lost a bunch of goals when they lost Hossa, Sammy, and likely Hudler. I'm not disagreeing that we need to fill a loss of goals, but filling the icetime left open by the departure of those guys will makeup for it in itself. [somewhere in here I think there was an argument against Filpulla wherein we all conceded that more icetime=more scoring] Between them there is 46 minutes a game, including almost 9 minutes if power play, to be doled out. how much of that time do we really expect to be used by the new acquisition? Unfortunately [i hate him, he's old, lazy, sucks etc], Sykora may be the only name that has been bandied about that may be useful on the PP. Louisville 112 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 Words can't describe how happy I am right now. The Pens benched this old man during the Finals and now we go after him? Holland is barking up the wrong trees right now. The top free agents we should have signed are already off the table. Holland is now going after the leftovers (crap). Sykora is 32...not really much older than anyone we have been talking about (at least around the same age). What do you expect? Everybody wants Holland to replace those '88 goals' but a 20 goal scorer isn't good enough. I'm really at a loss at what people want Holland to do with so few options. Not only does this player have to be the second coming of Christ, but they should also play here for a huge discount because we're the Red Wings.

His best days are behind him, which is why the Pens basically cut him out of their lineup. Holland should have acted earlier before all the top free agents were signed. That's why he's now going after someone like Williams or Sykora.

We need a goal scorer, like i said in my first post Greir and Sykora would be perfect IMO. Well, I want someone who is gonna shore up our penalty kill and win a few more battles along the boards and in front of the net. Anyhow: 2009 stats: Grier - 10 13 23 points Sykora - 25 21 46 points Peca - 4 18 22 points Malhotra - 11 24 35 points Considering the amount of salary it would take to get Sykora and Grier compared to Peca and Malhotra, I am not too worried about the combined 12 more points the former scored compared to the latter. Peca & Malhotra = BETTER defensively than Sykora/Grier... not that I am totally against Grier, but I would definately rather have Peca/Grier or Peca/Malhotra or Grier/Malhotra than Sykora AT ALL... As far as Sykora goes, he's consistently been a 20 - 30 goal scorer and can still manage to put up 50 - 60 points. If we can sign him for a fair amount, then I see no reason why not*. Yeah, Holland should of acted earlier. Too bad he was too busy trying to sign Hossa, Leino, and figure out the Hudler mess. I'm curious to know who you think he should of signed instead, and be sure to add the price tag they were signed for. After winning the cup in 2008, everyone in Detroit thought things were going to be great next season. They were when we signed Hossa. Lose Drake and gain Hossa? Awesome! Lose Hasek and gain Conklin? Awesome! Last year was our best chance to win another cup. When we lost in game 7, I just knew we were going to have a tough time next year. I knew keeping that team together was going to be impossible. Next season we are going to be fine. We will have to improve defensively to make up for the lack of goal scoring. I think Sykora is a good option because he is a good defensive forward.
