Time to MAN UP: Williams or Samuelsson?

I dont see the reason for all the hate around here.

The fans here who hate him are not going to let go of their perceptions of him during his first stint here unless he single-handedly wins the cup. He's also associated with a pretty big blunder during the 06 playoffs. It's going to take a lot of time to gain redemption from said fans. That is, if he even cares at all, which he doesn't. Even if he has a 60 point year I'm sure many here will chalk it up to his linemates and that he was just motivated because he got lowballed on his 1.5 mil contract and wants to cash in. And, he's got to show that he can be effective in the playoffs, fair or unfair.

Interesting question.

Both are very similar in style.

Both are shifty and can stick handle.

Williams is probably a better skater.

Fact is they are really, really alike in what they offer offensively.

Personally, I go with Samuellson just because he is more feisty. And at 6-1 (i think) and 200+ is a much larger than Williams.

You have to hand it to Sammy. He never took a facewash without giving it back.

6-2 I'm pretty sure. Babs said that from the looks of it that Sammy is or was the biggest forward on the team back in 08.

Of course Sammy.

He was more fun to watch and was way better looking than Williams. Sammy was a man with a style of play of his own. There will never be another one like him. Williams is just a little s*** who can't grow facial hair. Still don't know why Holland bothered bringing him back.

$1.5 million for a 20+ goal scorer --VS-- $2.5 million 15-19 goal scorer.

Williams is a bargain! Sammy is WAY overpaid.

Williams is the better bargain.

Are you serious?

Because Holland is the best GM in the sport of hockey. And the best GMs finds the best bargains available (post-hudler fiasco). A 20+ goal scorer for one-year @ $1.5 is a ******* bargain. Apparently there are a lot of hockey illiterates here who can not concept it.

That's why we keep geniuses like you around, to tell the rest of us how it really is.

;)

These other clowns know nothing about hockey.

Apparently people here don't watch hockey outside of the Red Wings. Try this some time, take off your red & white goggles and watch hockey and other players (who are not on the Red Wings) objectively. You'll be amazed how much you can learn.

Sure, and while I do that, how about you try pulling your head out of Jason Williams' ass and looking at him without your homer goggles on?

I like Sammy, but feel Van overpaid for his services. Would have liked Williams closer to $1M, but it is a one-year deal and, unless he shines really bright this year, will be gone next off-season.

If both were available at the same price ($1.5M), I'd have to go with Sammy. (Neither at $2.5M, there are better options out there.

I have. And I really don't think he's changed all that significantly since he was a Wing. I'm keeping my expectations of him very low.

What part of the facts don't you understand?

Sammy awarded $2.5 million had 40 pts in 08/09

Williams awarded $1.5 million had 47 pts in 08/09

Of course you could argue play-off performance;

Sammy had a better playoff performance in 2009, but then again, Sammy was on the best team in the league and made it to the 7th game of the finals. Whereas Williams played on an over-achieving team that was swept by the best team in the league.

1.5 mil 47 pt producer > 2.5 mil 40 pt producer. Its a no-brainer, really.

This isn't a make it or break it signing, we'll still probably win the division with Sammy or Williams. Williams will be on the 3rd line, so I don't see the big deal bringing him back. Plus it's only a one year deal.

My god what is the matter with you people? The whole time Sammy is here he is the town whipping boy and now everyone acts like we just lost Datsyuk or something. Sammy was clutch? Are you freaking serious? He scored the same number of goals as Hossa in the finals, the same number as Williams for that matter! Yes he scored an overtime winner against Chicago but that play happened because Campbell is a terrible defenseman and Flip made a great pass, all Sammy had to do was finish it which I am sure Williams could have managed just as well. Williams wasn't the free agent I was hoping for either but he will be an ok fit provided he plays on the third line with Helm.

Edit: He also hit a post on a breakaway in the SCF in game 3 or 4 I dont remember which, had he scored there we probably would have won in 5. No I am not blaming Sammy for us losing, I am just asking how can he be considered clutch?

Im gonna have to agree with most people on here. I would love to have Sammy over Williams. But...Considering the cap situation, which we all knew would bite us, I'll give Williams the edge

BUT....

It would have be nice to keep Sammy around and I am going to miss him. I would give the nod to Sammy but I am not going to write Williams of my list until he gives me a reason to miss him. I loved Sammy's clutch performance when we needed him. I have a feeling Williams will be a decent addition to te tem this year. I'm thinking 46 points but I'm praying for 60. Williams is the guy now, but I still give the nod to Sammy.

This is one of those comparisons that makes Sammy seem like a real bargain. He's bigger, better defensively, and at least can play on the PP (even with the off target shot). Given the choice, Sammy all the way.

This is a bummer, I'm going to cringe when I see Williams in a Wings uni again. Nothing personal against the guy, just don't want him on my team.

I agree with this fellow.

Williams is just for one year, so there is no risk.

Williams is fine. One year deal. Should be fired up to play for his contract for the following season. Knows the system. Cheaper than Sammy.

A one season stop dead measure for the 3rd or 4th line... barely worth discussing.
