New money woes confront former Red Wings star

Former Detroit Red Wings star Darren McCarty, who won his fourth Stanley Cup ring in 2008 after recovering from alcoholism and a high-profile bankruptcy filing, has new money problems.

The IRS last week accused him of failing to pay $62,189 in federal taxes.

That's the latest personal challenge facing the rugged, fan-friendly forward who became part of Detroit sports lore through his grinding style, charitable acts and legendary battles with Colorado's Claude Lemieux.

McCarty, 37, split last season between Detroit and minor-league affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins and became an unrestricted free agent after the Red Wings lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Stanley Cup finals.

What's owed:

The IRS filed a $33,847.81 lien against McCarty on Aug. 18 in the Oakland County Register of Deeds office. According to the lien, he owes income taxes from 2005.

The IRS filed a $28,341.53 lien against McCarty on Aug. 18. He owes trust fund taxes from 2004-05, according to the lien. When McCarty filed bankruptcy in 2005, he owed $33,653.55

in trust fund taxes to the state and IRS, according to a court filing.

His side:

McCarty could not be reached for comment through a Detroit Red Wings spokesman who called McCarty's cell phone and spoke to his agent. The agent was not familiar with the tax liens, team spokesman John Hahn said.

Hahn said McCarty reportedly is in Moscow pursuing a contract with a team in the Kontinental Hockey League. That's the same league that lured former Red Wings forward Jiri Hudler with a two-year $10 million contract.

McCarty's bankruptcy lawyer also did not respond to an e-mail seeking comment.

I hope KHL gives McCarty a nice inflated paycheck, seriously. If Hudler's worth $5,000,000 a year there... McCarty could easily fetch $1.75 mm a year.

I'm not knocking the OP, moreso the journalist, but I really don't want to know about this stuff. This isn't really news.

Besides, let Mac deal with it. The last thing he needs are some idiot fans who invade his personal space, ask for an autograph and then say something stupid like, "Oh yeah and I'm sorry about that whole IRS fiasco. The man can be a real ***** sometimes, believe me, I know. Well, good luck to ya while I sell this autograph to Competitive Edge Sports Collectibles at Meadowbrook Mall. Wait, it closed down? When did that happen? Them Australians be trippin' yo."

Now Hudler and the prostitutes... That was funny. It may be possible that he made sure each had their own strap-ons so they could double team him. He shoots he scores!!!

Could someone explain to me how an employee of a major sports team has unpaid taxes? I would have thought tax would be sorted by the employer? At least it would in Britain, I think

Well, the United States isn't Britain (or Scotland) and our tax laws and regulations are just a tad bit different. Your employer is not responsible for making sure your taxes are paid.....you are. You have to file your own tax returns every year, either jointly or separately, depending on how your finances are handled. Most people choose to have an accountant work out all the numbers so they know how much they'll either have to pay or how much they're getting back in a refund, but the onus is on the individual to make sure that by April 15th, the IRS has a state (if your state has a tax) and federal tax form from them.

How much money did Darren Mccarty make in his career? I'm not making any judgements. I just am curious what his paychecks were when he was in his prime.

He made more than enough for his family to be comfortable for a long, long time. Unfortunately for him, strung out, alcoholic, meth heads with gambling problems rarely make smart moves with their money. On the ice McCarty was a great hockey player and a Hockeytown hero. Off the ice he's a loser. No sympathy.

I dunno.. According to that link he made over 15 Million Dollars.. Hard to feel bad for someone having money problems when they have made that amount of money playing hockey, no matter what the excuse is..

Strung out = heroin

Meth head = crystal meth

Can I get a citation on McCarty having a drug problem? I knew he had an alcohol problem, but drugs? That's new to me.

He had some kind of drug problem although I highly doubt it was Meth and Heroin. I heard it was just weed, but who knows...

A dollar seventy five in millimeters per year?

Cute.

People really laughed out loud at that?

$1.75 multi-million per year. $1,750,000 for those that don't understand. Yikes...

Kudos to you for trying to start BS and bogus rumors, dips***. You have no clue what McCarty was (and wasn't) doing. You are just some pimple face prick in mama's basement trying to sound like a know-it-all, while not knowing s***. Please unplug the PC from the wall and find a job, loser!

How does it feel when people assume and making up bogus stuff?

Get a clue.

Cheers, this is very similar to the system in place here for people who are self-employed.

As reliable as it gets (?); from wikipedia dot calm :

Darren McCarty has been to rehab four times, for alcoholism and a cocaine addiction.

and from mlive dot com:

April 11, Associated Press: "Fans can connect with him because he's a regular guy and he's had some problems, just like all of us have," Holland said. "But his have been public."

McCarty made his fourth trip to rehab to work on substance-abuse issues in July and soon, he expects to be divorced for a second time. He filed for bankruptcy -- listing assets of $1.9 million and debts of $6.2 million -- and had to auction off Red Wing-related possessions along with items such as a speed boat and cigar humidor. McCarty said much of his financial issues were tied to former friends that didn't pay back debts at casinos, but did acknowledge getting in too deep with gambling in the past.

"Ten years ago, I bet on football. Not huge, but big enough where it got to the point where I lost money where I was like, 'OK, that's enough.' And I never bet on football again," he said. "I enjoy playing poker, but is that really gambling? I haven't played poker in a long time.

Don't shoot the messenger.

I hope for the best for McCarty. I'm sure he'll do the right thing and take whatever the KHL will give him so he can get his financial house in order. It is his best opportunity to make maximum money at this time. It's a shame that he pretty much blew through his money that he made in his career. I didn't know about his addictions (they can be a *****), but I knew about his gambling problem when he filed for bankruptcy before.

Red Wing heroes like Mac and Probie were great on the ice, but off the ice they had to deal with a bunch of demons. Probie seems to have his life straightened out and is doing ok. Hopefully Mac will be able to do the same.

Me hanging out with DMac:

DMac: "Whaazup T.Low?"

Me: "My job sucks, and i'm not hardly making any money in this new economy, and I'm not playing in the beer league this year because the late games start at 10:15pm, plus I can't really afford the $400 this season. And my internet is slow so its gonna suck watching the feed for tomorrows game in Dallas. Whazzup wich you, D?"

DMac: "I gotta play poker w/ Drapes, Malts and Holmer on the team plane to Dallas, then play a few shifts of hockey, and I think I get paid this week so I might buy another Corvette, or maybe another 4x4 this time, and a flat screen tv for my garage, and there's this girl in Dallas I've known for years, she's coming over to my hotel room after the game. We have time for a round of golf before we fly out to Denver the next day so we're gonna hook up with Hully and play this really swank club course. I can't really put my finger on it, but it always cheers me up talking to you T.Low!"
