Jimmy Howard

Waive him, send him down, trade him, whatever, just give it up. Everytime he makes a save, he can NEVER control the rebound. When the regular season starts, we'll be doomed. Heaven forbid OSgood gets hurt for the playoffs, and we have to rely on Howard as the starter? This guy just doesn't have it. No offense Jimmy, but it's over. Good lucj with whomever picks you up...

I don't think it's that bad man. It's not like he had the full team in front of him. Earlier in the game it looked to me like he smothered the puck when it was put on net. I don't think he's the answer, as I still think Larsson will end up being the starter of the future, but for now he's really all Detroit can do.

The season hasn't even started and you're already bashing him? From what I've seen thus far, he's done fine. The two goals he let in tonight were deflections, and it's fairly difficult to fault him on those. As far as his previous history in the league, I've seen him play bad only once. I believe it was against Minnesota. The rest of the games he did fine in my opinion, despite his record. They were all close games.

Howard is the first home-grown goaltender this organization has had make the NHL in years. I believe the first since Norm Maracle, actually.

If he falters during the season enough, I'll jump on this bandwagon. Until then, the kid has my faith. I think he'll do fine backing up Osgood.

Secondly, you act as if the Wings are going to waive him. Do you realize what sort of thought that is? They aren't moving him, and his contract is through 2011.

And for the record, if Osgood gets hurt for the playoffs we'd be F***ed regardless of who the backup was. You think Conklin could've carried us to the finals? I love the guy and he did fantastic in his tenure here... But there is a big difference between 25 wins in a season and 16 in the playoffs.

It's really a mute point. I believe that in all likelyhood, McCollum will "probably" end up as this organizations next mainstay starter, unless he seriously has trouble in the AHL. However, I doubt this. Larsson will "probably" be the backup for the wings, and Jimmy will "most likely" move on in a few years. Or I could be totally wrong. Who knows.

How do you know it's over? The regular season/playoffs hasn't even started yet and he's slated to be a backup goalie for this season/playoffs, a season that hasn't even started yet.

And it's only been what, 10 games over the past few seasons while he's been playing in the minors as expected/planned? Kinda a small sample size to go buy unfairly. How about we let him play his planned role, give it time to fairly judge, then perhaps go bananas if he cannot hack it?

I don't recall a whole lot of offensive support (A loss 1-0 to Dallas, 4-1 to Vancouver, 3-1 last night) And didn't he have a W on his record too?

That being said, his sv % is not impressive this preseason.

Here we go, again. You can't judge anything until he gets consistent real game action. Last night he hardly saw any shots. Also, as someone said, the two goals were on deflections. Goalies are the hardest prospect to develop, because they take so long, compared to other positions. He needs time.

I beg to differ. That's exactly what the whole preseason is about. Judging people.

Not bashing him yet, but he's on thin ice.

Of course we will judge, but when the plan has been that he'll be on the roster this season barring unforseen circumstances, saying that he is done before the seaseon even starts is ridiculously premature. I don't think there have been any unforseeen circumstances preventing Howard from making the roster.

What about his time in the AHL hes consistently inconsistent. Hes never been able to shake the stigma that he has great runs, then s***ty runs. While I am 100% for trading him away, I think itd be better to do it after we see him a couple more times, just to be absolutely sure hes just not jiving in the NHL.

The OP has no faith in Howard, apparently. Can't say I really blame him. Obviously Holland isn't going to run him out of town based on the preseason, but I think it's also fairly obvious that Howard is on a very short leash with the Wings brain trust. It may not be over now, but I don't think Holland and Co. are going to tolerate much.

I'm really hoping the best for Jimmy, but I just have a gut feeling that we'll have another goalie by the end of the year.

^ agrees.

I'm far from confident in Jimmy, but for the time being, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. If his play continues to be sub-par after a handful of games in the regular season, then I might start making these kinds of claims, but in the meantime, take a breather.

As for the playoff goaltending situation, I'm much more inclined to believe that Holland and company would go with the prospect (Howard, Larsson, McCollum) playing the best at that time, or sign a cheap veteran backup to plug the hole. If Jimmy is playing badly, he won't be between the pipes come playoff time.

It may be a little soon for this kind of bashing, and I'm usually all for the goaltenders and hate goalie threads, but I admittedly have felt similar. Its been 4 years now since he first saw a start with the Wings coming out of the lockout, and there as been little improvement in his rebound control. Usually the Wings have a proven, solid backup goaltender and need one because they usually end up splitting duties 60/40.

I just have very little confidence in Howard's ability to fill that role and win games consistently. Its time now for him either to step up or give up.
