Leino Watch Thread!

This. We know every offensive player wants to get points. Even if you're playing well, guys like Leino just need those points. It's a whole different when talking about guys like Miller and Eaves. To be good offensively is harder.

So what does it mean for Leino that Miller and Eaves are both outproducing him offensively by a fairly significant margin?

What are we watching Leino do again?

I rooted for this guy to be on the roster, I was at the Caps game when he scored his first goal...but at this point he needs to hit the gym and step up his game, he's getting rocked out there every single night.

I think now he knows what he has to do now in order to play. It's just that it's going to take some time for him to do those things on a game by game basis.

Babcock's quote is telling. Leino thought he only had to score, and that because he wasn't he was benched. This could explain why he was trying to do so much and force things, which can frustrate a young player and put them in a slump.

If that quote was recent, maybe Leino will start focusing on the little things like Babcock says. Do all the little basic things and the scoring will come if you have a natural talent for it like Leino has had in the past.

Leino does good things but doesn't get the points. He's better than Miller and Eaves offensively.

Not really.

Offense includes hard work, and he isn't working hard enough. That's why those guys are scoring. They're going to the net, which is where the goals are to be had.

Leino is afraid to go to the net, hence he doesn't score goals.

i think he would probably get some points if he didn't spend half of his playing time skating in a circle in the left corner

Several seasons of experience?

No.

Like I said, those players are more willing to go to the scoring areas. Anyone who watches or plays hockey should know that. Leino should know it too. He's just too lazy or scared to do so.

It's good that you know these things so we stupid people can always ask from you.

Probably because he's too weak to to take it. Every time he ventures into the scoring areas he gets knocked on his ass or falls over the ice monster.

I was watching Ville closely against Tampa Bay. I saw him take a horrible shot and then follow it up with the exact same shot... except that it failed even more miserably than the first. He's playing scared. Thinks he has no time. Weak on the puck. Shot selection is absolutely atrocious. Hopefull Flip can help him find his game.

He is not turning out to be a "heady" hockey player. It's like the coaches said shoot more. so he just shoots it from anywhere. He doesn't appear to read plays or the ice well. He's running short on time i think...once people start coming back from injuries. BYE BYE!!!

i am on board the "eva" bandwagon....

ville is afraid to go to the net, hold the puck, fight for ice.

i cant help but see his GLARING mistakes every game.

he makes lebda, samuelsson and lang look good.

i for one think that ritola, or tatar sauce should get a look right now and bench leino.

i have lost patience watching him.

I noticed that too (kinda thought it was funny), but I actually thought that he looked pretty good last game.

Thinking tatar or anyone from GR would do better is stupid. He was never going to be better than Hudler this season, people who thought he'd be the best rookie were also mistaken. He should be playing on our third or fourth line but he's being asked much more than he should for a rookie - scoring duty and an expectation to produce. Once we're healthy, Leino will be on the third line where he should be and I think he'll put up more points, like Hudler.

Leino is a talented player. But not only was he not going to be better than Hudler this season, he quite possibly will never reach the level Hudler was playing at last season. Leino is a year older, bigger, and stronger yet he is much weaker on the puck, doesn't work hard and go to the 'dirty' areas like Hudler does, and just doesn't seem to have the potential to ever be what Hudler is now.

I laughed in the summer when people said Leino would replace Hudler, only better. Leino might make a solid second-liner with some experience. Hudler is a bona-fide top-line talent right now.

Not to bring negativity, but I had big expectations from Leino. I was looking at him to score 12-15+ goals and 30+ points. I'm disappointed with his efforts along the boards. I know, with all the injuries, it's probably putting a lot of pressure on the guy and he should probably just be a 3rd liner, but I was really hoping he'd step up to the opportunity.

That said, he's a rookie and I'm not giving up on him. There's still plenty of time for him to break out. I'll still be there rooting for him. Leino, if you read this, please eat your Wheaties and work out in the weight room. You need some strength.
