Opie 308 Report post Posted January 8, 2010 No more discussion - Howard is our # 1 goalie. “I can’t say I’m the number one goalie, that’s for sure,†Howard said. “I mean, there’s a guy sitting right over there that’s got three Stanley Cups and almost 400 wins. I’m just going out there and playing.†

Pucks 66 Report post Posted January 8, 2010 The kid is not going to say, "Hell yeah I'm the #1 bro". He seems really excited in the interviews. He mentioned something about being so amp'd up that he can't sleep after games. It's kind of funny because that's how he plays, amp'd up, haha. He's seems like a good guy. He's not going to create any problems with Osgood or the coaching staff. He's enjoying himself. I doubt he cares about the rest of it. He's finally living his dream of playing in the NHL and so far so good. That was a awful game last night but he was amazing. He got lots of help from his team and he thanked them in the media. He wasn't afraid to admit it. I really like that about him.

haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted January 8, 2010 (edited) I don't really get the fixation here on who is the "#1 goalie" during the regular season. Because Detroit almost never has a clear number one, so all it means is that the guy who's currently starting is the #1, until he isn't. Which could be next month, next week, or next game. I can understanding discussing who should be starting the next games, but the label #1 goaltender is a meaningless title in Detroit until playoff time. SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted January 8, 2010 Some of Osgood fans are pathetic... Why? I don't really get the fixation here on who is the "#1 goalie" during the regular season. Because Detroit almost never has a clear number one, so all it means is that the guy who's currently starting is the #1, until he isn't. Which could be next month, next week, or next game. As usual, people are reading way too much into things in regards to goaltending. It is not that hard to figure out right now. Wings need points. They do not have the luxury of being a top seed right like they have been for a while. They need the guy who gives the best chance to win. Right now that guy is Howard until Howard consistently shows that he has faltered. He has not done that yet.
Opie 308 Report post Posted January 8, 2010 Some of Osgood fans are pathetic... I hope you weren't referring to me because I am probably the biggest J-Ho fan on here! That being said, Ozzie is the starter come Playoff time, unless when given consecutive starts, he looks worse than Jimmy. No way in hell do I want the Wings riding a rookie in the post season unless he is fighting for the Vezina, IF that is the case then by all means play Jimmy. Other wise in order to make a deep run the Wings need a vet who has been there before.
Miller Brew 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2010 Should Osgood start against the Sharks?
Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted January 8, 2010 (edited) Should Osgood start against the Sharks? I think so. Jimmy has been phenomenal lately, but I think it would best serve him if he sat the game following the 51 save feat. I would hope Jimmy would take it as a message to not let that game get to his head, and continue to work to be the best he can be. Meanwhile, Osgood gets the nod against one of the premier teams in the league, well rested and in their barn. Babs is always going on about going with the goalie who gives the team the best chance to win. Going to Osgood in this scenario may boost his confidence. Besides, he does need to get into the net sooner or later. Besides, this is as likely to be one of those "can't win regardless of who's in net" games as any, so might as well take advantage of it. Guest mindfly Report post Posted January 8, 2010 (edited) Just give osgood a chance PLZZZZZZZZZZZ... if the team in front of him plays as good as they do in front of howard they will win alot of games from now on...Howard has had alot of luck, team is playing lights out defensively with desperation sacrificing their bodies and s***, speaking of raw talent osgood is superior and his stickhandling is way better than howards and thats an important part of the game, start some offense with a good solid first pass from the goalie, essential stuff. Howard has done all what we asked for, BUT osgood is a better goaltender and they sure as hell wont let the rookie play in the playoffs so i can't understand what they are waiting for...and when osgood do get the start he MUST play playoff hockey or he will go deeper in the doghouse. Guest mindfly Report post Posted January 8, 2010 There was no offense, that's what it was about last night, and the team played great in front of the net clearing all pucks howard can't control. Osgood can control them much better.

Osgood can control them much better. Giving up 52 shots is not an 'offensive problem'. LA controlled the puck and had 3 shooting lanes to pick from at any point and time. That is, by definition, a DEFENSIVE problem. I will agree that the team was pretty good at clearing some of the rebounds..but that was the only bright spot defensively except for Howard himself. Evans_18 4 Report post Posted January 8, 2010 I remember a few times last night where are defense was there to bail Howard out. He was phenomenal last night I am happy for him. My main concern though last night were the many situations that I recall seeing Howard lay on his back and our defense go into a mad scramble to clear the zone. I think he just needs to not remind us of Hasek so much in some aspects of the game, and pretty much I mean no snow angels. Because Hasek always scared the hell out of me, and I have hope for Howard. At first place I'm Detroit fan and everything else comes after. Put Essensa or Cheveldae I don't care as far as we are winning. Some of Osgood fans (pathetic ones) aren't giving full credit to Howard which is just not fine.

Alright, I just didn't want you to take my quote as I was saying anything. I am pretty indifferent as to who starts, until the playoffs start, for now I think Howard should start because the team seems to play more alert in front of him. I haven't lost faith in Ozzie, but man I am really enjoying watching a former U-Mainer in Det! (2 if you include Janik whom I think deserves to be on this team more then Lebda or Meech.) I thought Janik looked really bad last night against LA. Which sucks because I like him. It was really noticeable how bad his breakout passes are... if he even tries one. Most of the time he's content to just try and angle it off the boards. It took LA about 15 seconds to figure him out and intercept almost every one of his clearing attempts. He needs A LOT of work. Opie 308 Report post Posted January 9, 2010 Oh I agree, but what I like about Janik is he knows what he is, a #6 Nhl/ top 3 AHL defenseman, he plays within that game and as you pointed out usually avoids the outlet pass as that is not his game. But as a # 6 I will take him every day over what the Wings have. However I am not going to root against Lebda, just prefer Janik!
