I suggest for those that are really so offended by drunk drivers, you should join a group like Mother's Against DD or something and actually work towards making a difference in your community instead of just having ill-will towards people like Chelios.

It's not constructive to piss and moan about Chelios on a message board. It changes nothing. I get how angry it can make people because I've lost multiple family members due to it as well and I've had too many friends derail their lives by getting DUI's, but you've got to make a choice at some point to stop being defined by the anger and focus on being constructive. I don't blame anyone for having the emotion, but it's absolutely our choice and our responsibility to not let our emotions dictate our behavior. And again, in this case, just pissing and moaning and hating on people who screw up accomplishes absolutely nothing.

There is a huge difference between truly caring about making a difference and sheer anger. Sadly, for so many people, the anger can become almost as destructive as the act itself. Unfortunately, I've seen that in my friends and family too. You've got to turn the anger and negativity around and find some way to conjure a positive response and give something constructive back to the world as opposed to simply more negativity.

And you've got to have grace for people. Having grace for people and forgiving them absolutely does not condone the actions, but it's an utterly and completely necessary part of the healing process. Some of the people I know who have done the most good in causes such as alcohol abuse are people who initially screwed up. But they received a bit of grace and had a good support base around them and they were able to overcome it and have now been living much of their lives to give back and try and make a positive difference. Now they're the one's volunteering to pick people up that they don't even know at bars and going to schools to speak and trying hard to engage people who struggle to help them through it.

But I'll tell you the absolute truth, none of that happens when you let anger rule. No good comes from more negativity. That's the reality, and it's a choice you have to make. You do have the power to make that choice.

This quote is profound, and I'll get off my little soapbox and leave you with it:

"Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom." -Viktor E. Frankl

I've lost a friend to a drunk driver. I am in no way overreacting. No s*** people aren't perfect, but there's a certain level of imperfection that can't be tolerated.

Fair enough, but drunk and legally drunk is 2 different things. Both are very stupid, but I'm just saying, just because you get a DUI doesn't mean you were driving impaired, regardless of what we've been told since we were 5 years old. I'm not defending drunk driving whatsoever, but a DUI doesn't make you a terrible person, but killing someone while driving drunk or impaired is basically murder and a totally different subject.

What about the people that had ill will towards him before this incident? This is like a double bonus for me. I despise people who drink and drive and I also despise Chelios. This is like LGW utopia for me.

Not on your life, not MADD. They're neo-prohibitionist at this point. Dislike drunk driving, sure. Say that drinking should be banned, as they pretty much do? No.

Everyone acting like Cheli should be castrated for this is amazing. Pretty much everyone with a driver's license that drinks has driven when they shouldn't have. Maybe not over the legal limit, but certainly impaired to some degree. And not even just alcohol. I'm not saying what Cheli did was OK, but I find it very hard to believe that everyone condemning him so harshly has never driven when they shouldn't have at least once

I'm not saying he should be castrated. I'm saying he's a complete moron.

When I'm behind the wheel of the car, I'm 100% in control of my faculties. My sister and I did a road trip up to Chicago a couple of years ago and when it was my turn to drive, we had to stop at a Days Inn for the night halfway through because I was starting to get tired and I didn't want to risk getting into an accident on a desolated stretch of I-24 at 2am. I drink once a year, and it's one cocktail on my birthday and I don't even drive to my birthday dinner anyway, so there's no chance I'd be driving home from it. The only times I've ever had to be on prescription medication strong enough to make me drowsy, I was in no physical condition to drive anyway, so I couldn't.

Just because it's unbelievable to you doesn't mean squat to me. If your faculties are impaired in any way and you get behind the wheel of a 2-ton weapon, and I'm injured as a result of that, I'm going to own everything you own, including the boxers that cover your nuts. I won't demand you be castrated, murdered, locked in a cage or anything else others here have suggested. I'll just sue you until your great-grandchildren are paying me off.

That's pretty much exactly how I imagined your response would be. I *almost* put an "except you, Electrophile" disclaimer in my post.

Just a thought...

Medicines- prescription or over the counter- can impair as much as booze. Sometimes even more.

Just food for thought.

So can having a conversation with the person in the car with you (and talking on the phone, texting, fiddling with the radio, eating, etc...). Obviously after a few drinks, talking to the person next to you, sending a text and eating a burrito at the same time while driving is not a good idea :)

Great post from gcom earlier!

Since we have so many people on their high horse because they lost a loved one to a drunk driver (which I totally sympathize with):

"I worry that the movement I helped create has lost direction. [.08 legislation] ignores the real core of the problem…If we really want to save lives, let’s go after the most dangerous drivers on the road."

“[MADD] has become far more neo-prohibitionist than I had ever wanted or envisioned… I didn’t start MADD to deal with alcohol. I started MADD to deal with the issue of drunk driving.â€

"The majority of crashes occur with high blood-alcohol levels, the .15, .18 and .25 drinkers. Lowering the blood-alcohol concentration was not a solution to the alcohol problem.â€

—Candy Lightner, founder of MADD (2002)

The cause of people dying from being hit by a drunk driver is not someone going to a bar or party and having 2 drinks. Some of you simply say that it's "smarter" not to drink, then drive. DUH !!! But some of us enjoy drinking and can't afford to take a cab home every time we go out for a couple of drinks after work. Doesn't make us a-holes.

Cheli could though, so that's his fault.

ps, one thing I find really interesting is that the people enforcing drunk driving are some of the worst drunks out there. I've met some very cool cops, but just 2 weeks ago I had a bunch of cops getting wasted at my bar, flashing their badges asking for free drinks. What do you do? Call their supervisor? Yeah right.

I know a lot of cops that are heavy, heavy drinkers and use their badge as a 'free drunk driving' pass. Side issue, but it really peeves me off.

Nice post. MADD really has become an abolitionist movement.

true. doctors warn you before they give the medicine, not to take before opperating a car. (or mine did after i had surgery) also told not to take prescription medicine(cold medicine) and drink alcohol shortly after..

which there are people that do this not caring, like people have said about those drinking and stil drivng. sadly people are going to do what they want, regardless of what happens to them. with cheli, i'm pretty sure this isn't a first time he's had a DUI. if he wasn't a sports star i'm pretty sure this topic wouldn't be carried out like this..

Who's the ****** in the middle?

And man, has Cheli never heard of sunscreen?

The ****** in the middle is Derek Roy.

Cheli is always that dark in the summertime. The Greek really comes out in the sun! :D
