Ovechkin named Captain

I don't really see who else they could've picked. In terms of attitude he really is the most important guy in Washington. His English isn't great but journalist love him and while he sometimes says random things to media he won't be completely inappropriate. If anything this will perhaps make him develop other sides both on and off the ice.

Great pick for captain. Who cares if his english isn't that good. Most of the LGW users here have terrible english as well as grammer. If Stevie Y didn't have to say a word in the lockerroom and lead by his heart and play, then why can't OV? Because, he can, that's why.

Honestly I don't think it's a very good choice, and I like Ovy.

Maybe it's because I grew up watching Yzerman as captain that's influenced how I think they should act, but I think passionate guys like Ovechkin are better off when they have free reign. He's definitely the franchise, but I don't know that makes him the best team representative, especially considering his english skills.

It'd be like naming Roenick captain. Or Hull. And I don't think Brett was a very good one. Those kind of players are better off being able to be the loose cannons that they inherently are and not have to speak for the team.

And frankly, Ovy whines too much for my liking to be a captain.

(First speech to team as a captain)

Now guys, you put your elbow into the shoulder and the knee behind their leg and down they go. I swear it's clean. Also, it is now mandatory to do an end-zone style dance after every goal. Fanboys love it! :P

Language never stopped Jagr from being a captain and he's still not very good at English. There are a number of different captain types. I was told once that a good coach tries to fill 3 different areas with his captains and assistants. 1. Skill 2. Brains 3. Emotions. Ovechkin would fulfill the skill and emotion areas. Hopefully the other guys have the brains.

to me it's better for the team and for AO if he can just be himself and not worry about what he's saying or doing as captain.

From now you shall refer to Ovechkin (why doesn't he add a "g" to the end of his name?) as The Captain and nothing else.

This is a great idea! He’s among the best players in the league. He’s funny, passionate and plays with tons of heart. Plus, he’s been a leader on that team all along. Brilliant choice for Captain.
