SweWings 45 Report post Posted January 5, 2010 I don't really see who else they could've picked. In terms of attitude he really is the most important guy in Washington. His English isn't great but journalist love him and while he sometimes says random things to media he won't be completely inappropriate. If anything this will perhaps make him develop other sides both on and off the ice.
henrik40 76 Report post Posted January 6, 2010 Seems like a logical choice, I imagine the media in Washington loves him. Language barrier won't be a problem, his english doesn't seem that bad to me.
Konnan511 1,736 Report post Posted January 6, 2010 Great pick for captain. Who cares if his english isn't that good. Most of the LGW users here have terrible english as well as grammer. If Stevie Y didn't have to say a word in the lockerroom and lead by his heart and play, then why can't OV? Because, he can, that's why.
hooon 1,089 Report post Posted January 6, 2010 I never even thought there was a question about who it would be. I wish him the best, he will be comfortable with the roll soon i believe.
haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted January 6, 2010 (edited) Honestly I don't think it's a very good choice, and I like Ovy. Maybe it's because I grew up watching Yzerman as captain that's influenced how I think they should act, but I think passionate guys like Ovechkin are better off when they have free reign. He's definitely the franchise, but I don't know that makes him the best team representative, especially considering his english skills. It'd be like naming Roenick captain. Or Hull. And I don't think Brett was a very good one. Those kind of players are better off being able to be the loose cannons that they inherently are and not have to speak for the team. And frankly, Ovy whines too much for my liking to be a captain. Edited January 6, 2010 by haroldsnepsts
Jaymz99 2 Report post Posted January 6, 2010 (First speech to team as a captain) Now guys, you put your elbow into the shoulder and the knee behind their leg and down they go. I swear it's clean. Also, it is now mandatory to do an end-zone style dance after every goal. Fanboys love it!

Datsasuk 2 Report post Posted January 6, 2010 Language never stopped Jagr from being a captain and he's still not very good at English. There are a number of different captain types. I was told once that a good coach tries to fill 3 different areas with his captains and assistants. 1. Skill 2. Brains 3. Emotions. Ovechkin would fulfill the skill and emotion areas. Hopefully the other guys have the brains.

haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted January 6, 2010 ...harold....!!!!! Are you having a hangover, or what? ,, ovi,,...he is going to be the best captain in history...he is the best player in the world forever!! to me it's better for the team and for AO if he can just be himself and not worry about what he's saying or doing as captain. Williams29fan 6 Report post Posted January 6, 2010 Congrats to Ovi, never suspected anything different. Just adds more attention to Ovi, Don Cherry will be so ecstatic! I love when Ovi pisses him off!
Guest Lidstromboli Report post Posted January 6, 2010 From now you shall refer to Ovechkin (why doesn't he add a "g" to the end of his name?) as The Captain and nothing else.
dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted January 6, 2010 Not surprising. Personally I think it's a terrible choice, but then again they don't have a lot of "captain material" on their team.

Mr.Macphisto 2 Report post Posted January 6, 2010 This is a great idea! He’s among the best players in the league. He’s funny, passionate and plays with tons of heart. Plus, he’s been a leader on that team all along. Brilliant choice for Captain.
Datsyuk2Zetterberg 1 Report post Posted January 6, 2010 they really didn't have many other choices, unless they went with Liach. They have Knuble and Morrison who could be good captains but they are relatively new to the organization and that would make less sense then OV.
