Travis 576 Report post Posted February 3, 2010 While wearing all his Ducks gear. TORONTO -- Dion Phaneuf needed a minute, but settled for less. "Just 30 seconds," he pleaded from his dressing room stall. "Thank you." There was no room to move in the crowd that had formed around the new Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman after Tuesday night's game. Brutally physical on the ice and chatty in the dressing room between periods, Phaneuf helped lead the beleaguered franchise to a 3-0 win over the New Jersey Devils in his debut performance, snapping a six-game winless streak in the process. "It was a great honour to put this jersey on tonight and to be a part of this organization," he said. "And the fans were unbelievable. To be on this side and playing in front of them wearing this jersey, it meant a lot to me. It was a very special game in my career." It was a good night for the whole team, which general manager Brian Burke had remodelled in a flurry of activity over the weekend. Some of the greatest contributions were made by new players, led by Phaneuf, forward Fredrik Sjostrom and goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere. Giguere finished with 30 saves, becoming only the second goaltender in team history to record a shutout in his debut. Ed Belfour was the first, beating the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-0 on Oct. 10, 2002. TheOwl 77 Report post Posted February 3, 2010 Anahiem really did get butt f***ed. THey take on Toskala and Blake's contract. It's kind of ironic isn't it? Anaheim, built by Burke, wins Cup. Burke moves to Toronto, sends his crap to Anaheim, get's his starting goalie back. He's basically re-building Anaheim in Toronto.
T-Ruff 47 Report post Posted February 3, 2010 (edited) Anahiem really did get butt f***ed. THey take on Toskala and Blake's contract. Tosaka is a UFA this year and they have Hiller so that's not so bad... but Definitely on Blake I think they took Blake instead of having to include a draft pick or something (as Anaheim was desperate to move Giguere who has a NTC) Edited February 3, 2010 by T-Ruff
rick zombo 3,739 Report post Posted February 3, 2010 Anahiem really did get butt f***ed. THey take on Toskala and Blake's contract. Anaheim clears 3M off the books for next season and ends the goalie controversy. Toronto are stuck with a 7M goalie in 2010/2011. Albeit a good one. I think it's an even deal as far as what both teams wanted to accomplish.

Guest zackmorris Report post Posted February 3, 2010 Doesn't change anything anyone's said about them or the deal before the game. They're still overrated players who will suck in Toronto. They were going to get a shutout sometime this season, it just happened in the first game, that's all. This isn't basketball, adding a couple players doesn't change your horrible system overnight. I'm positive this game tonight will fool alot of people though.

He's basically re-building Anaheim in Toronto. It's a lot like Burke is actually GM of both Toronto and Anaheim, using Anaheim as a sort of farm for Toronto. Bizarre and probably some shady goings on. Toronto won't be winning anything anytime soon, but maybe they can actually win a few games before the season ends. Yzerman191 37 Report post Posted February 3, 2010 I've been looking forward to Toronto's rise. I like it when the original six teams are competitive; it's disappointing to see teams like Carolina or Tampa Bay winning the cup when the locals don't even know they have a hockey team. Contrary to popular opinion here, I actually think Burke is a good GM, and I think he knows where he's going. Burke likes to build big, tough teams. He also builds his teams from the back end, which worked out pretty well in Anaheim. Goals against has been Toronto's biggest problem this season; they lead the league in goals against. Phaneuf, Beauchemin, Kaberle, and Schenn constitute a pretty solid back end, and Giguere is still a capable starting goaltender. There are four top 8 teams in the Eastern Conference that have scored fewer goals than Toronto has. I wonder if Niedermayer signs in Toronto this offseason? adubs 8 Report post Posted February 3, 2010 Just wait till Phaneuf has a bad game. I guarantee you he won't have the same sentiments about the fans. Just ask Murph. Yeah the game after he got cut from Team Canada he was a machine until he was thrown out for the hit on Kopitar. When Jokinen was first traded to Calgary he scored 8 goals in 6 games. I'm not too worried about the new Flames after one game. Can't expect guys to come in and play great a day after being traded. Especially when two of the guys on the team know they are about to be traded.
dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted February 3, 2010 LOL @ the 3 Stars 1. Giguere 2. Phaneuf 3. Sjostrom Yes when I woke up and checked the NHL.com boxscore I had a good laugh about that Oh, Leafs. This shutout by JS will make them think they'll go undefeated the rest of the way and win the cup. I do hope they can get a boost from these trades and climb in the standings a bit. Don't want Boston to have a top 5 pick.

I think it's an even deal as far as what both teams wanted to accomplish. I dont know about Anaheim but Toronto is too concerned with how much money they actually have to pay the players - it's all about cap space. By taking Blake and moving Gigeure Anaheim saves themselves $2M in cap space next season as Toskala will have moved on. It's the same reason Burke has publicly stated the Leafs are willing to take on contracts for picks etc and potentially bury them in the minors if need be. The Leafs have the money to keep a guy like Jeff Finger in the minors, not have his salary count against the cap, and pay him the $3 odd million bucks his salary requires them to pay. stevkrause 1,247 Report post Posted February 3, 2010 I thought that was odd too, the trade happened 3 days prior... he couldn't have gotten some new pads(or his re-upholstered) in time and at bare minimum, a plain white helmet? on any note, he looked strong... stevkrause 1,247 Report post Posted February 3, 2010 Goalies tend to be comfortable and superstitious - deadly combo... oh, trust me, I know the quirky and odd nature of goalies... had too many of them as friends, haha my point is, he's not going to stay in duck gear for his entire career in Tor, so why not start it off right - he could have even had the same helmet sand blasted so it was white and the same pads re-upholstered, so the equipment was actually the same... it just always looks odd to me when a goalie takes the ice with a new team, wearing old team colors... especially when they've had a few days to change it...
