Broken 16 381 Report post Posted July 6, 2010 I know that guys like Eaves and Miller made us a tougher team to play against, because they constantly crashed the net. Adding Hudler and Modano gives us two more finesse players who won't go to the scoring areas as often. That's not what I want in an ideal 3rd liner. I'd rather have two players that go into the scoring areas once in a while and score than two players that always go in and never score. 1 Lidstrom for life reacted to this
stevie12 5 Report post Posted July 6, 2010 I just finished reading a couple of articles about Chicago in on the Modano sweepstakes. I got this eerie feeling that if he signs there it will backfire on us and he will be a huge addition to their lineup. (cough, Hossa, cough)

Draper will be the 13th/14th forward along with Miller and Eaves rotating, let Ritola go back down thru waivers. Abdelkader has GRR eligibility so he will be sent down without having to pass waivers. Modano didn't score that much last year. Considering who his linemates were compared to who Miller and Eaves played with, he didn't score much at all. You're discrediting the contributions Miller and Eaves gave our team last year. You need a balanced team in order to win. Scorers and grinders. I'm not seeing too many grinders right now on our team. Even on the bottom lines we're a little light. Ooops, I just realized Miller has been re-signed. Well, that's a good move and he'll give us much needed depth on the 4th line when there's injuries. Jesusberg 1,256 Report post Posted July 6, 2010 To be fair, Modano still put up 30 points in 59 games while being bumped around all over the line-up. At times he was stuck on a lines with Barch (6 points), Brunnstrom (11 points) and Petersen (15 points). I feel confident in thinking that he could put up 40+ points on a third line with Cleary and Hudler/Bert. 2 HankthaTank and Original-Six reacted to this
VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted July 6, 2010 Modano can play a few different roles on the team. I doubt we'll have consistent lines all year. Modano will probably be a PP specialist along with a guy to feed the pucks to Eaves, Miller, Helm, Abdelkader, whoever he plays with. But I have a bad feeling he'll sign with Chicago, thus helping them alleviate their disaster. It'd be just too perfect for Chicago to be able to get out of their hole by pulling a Wings move by signing good players for dirt cheap. Just like they stole our style of play and players. jeff48109 474 Report post Posted July 6, 2010 This is where it's at. Will he be willing to play on the third line? Or the fourth? Like I said before I don't know what lines he played on in Dallas, but did somebody say the fourth? Whatever. I hope he signs. I do think it'll give our guys incentive to play harder. OK, I want to think so. I am pretty sure hes not going to Chicago. Depending on what happens with Niemi's arbitration and Hjalmarsson's new contract its a very real possibility they might have to move more players. They are still in cap purgatory. Edited July 6, 2010 by Original-Six

Do you realize how hard it is to repeat in today's NHL? Especially when you have lost or have to had traded away a great deal of your depth. Detroit kept most of their team in 2009 and almost did it, but yet didn't. Pitt lost a few key ingrediants on the D and didn't get past the 2nd round. Chicago will be competitive all season, but will not come near repeating. So if Mike's idea is to play a couple more season in the hope of getting one more Cup, he should not sign with the Hawks. Not saying Detroit is the favorite, but of all the teams rumored to be interested, it actually is his best opportunity. Besides, who would rather be on a line with, Hudler and Cleary or Marcus Kruger and Ben Smith? If he doesn't sign with Detroit, he will retire... 3 F.Michael, Z and D for the C and Original-Six reacted to this
HockeyTownHouligan 57 Report post Posted July 7, 2010 That would be a killa third line if he signs and i hope he does. I just hope we don't lose any future depth players in the process and end up doing something stupid. I really don't think modano was any kind of a slouch when i came to hitting or going to dirty areas so if he is signed as a role player he wouldn't be a wimp, hell even hudler gets in there sometimes. I wouldn't worry about that line's lack of "grit".
Rice 42 Report post Posted July 7, 2010 From the Detroit News: Detroit -- Forget about the Blackhawks or any other NHL team. If Westland native Mike Modano decides he wants to play hockey next season, he is going play for the Red Wings."There isn't any other team," said Modano, standing outside Tigers and Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch's suite at Comerica Park Tuesday night. "It will be here or I'm not playing. I think it's narrowed to that." I bet he signs tomorrow. Hockey Convert 55 Report post Posted July 7, 2010 I do think it'll give our guys incentive to play harder. OK, I want to think so. Yeah, this is a question for me. At what point does it stop making the guys want to play harder, and start discouraging the younger guys because they think the Wings will just keep bringing in veterans and not give them a legitimate shot to grow through some ice time? I know, there were all the injuries this year, but to me, time playing with the skilled veterans on a healthy team is different than being brought in with all the pressure on you because the skilled vets are injured. Who will have to be bumped from that chance to accommodate Modano if he signs? Also, regarding the motivation level of Modano himself, I think there are a couple issues. He doesn't seem that completely sure he even wants to play another season; if we convince him to sign, will that hunger level ever materialize? How about if his wife is unhappy still being so far from L.A.? I'm not sure why some people are so sure he'll provide this surge of energy and motivation to the team. That may very well happen, but these other factors could easily make him just coast through, too. It seems just as risky to me as giving the guys we have the shot, or bringing in a grinder. 2 Veery and redwingfan19 reacted to this

Besides, the other "favorites" aren't interested and Detroit really doesn't have any big buck UFA aspirations so, Modano fits Hollands bill to a tee! He is exactly the type of UFA that Holland loves to sign! I am a bit surprised at the offer of two years, but I guess they feel Mike has it in him to play two more, then so be it. I like it. I know he is not the 6'4 230lb. guy I always clammer about, but I do like him here. Also, I do believe he will provide Hudler with a lot of awesome setups, possibly propelling HUdler over 30 goals. I also predict, if Modano takes the 2 years, he will be celebrating at least 1 more Cup and his 600th goal! edit: Could this be Filppula's last year to prove he deserves second line minutes? I am not bashing him, I like Filppula, but he makes $3M, time to start putting the numbers up... Edited July 7, 2010 by LeftWinger

What a waste of cap space Draper will split time with Miller and Eaves (if Eaves signs) the odd men out are Meech and Ritola. Pav -Z - Homer Franz - Flip - Bert Hud - Modo - Cleary Miller - Helm - Eaves (Abby has GR eligibilty, so he can and prolly will be sent down) Draper I just hope after all are re-signed, there is enough for a $1.2M d-man or the #6 spot.
