Rypien suspended 6 games

From what I read on Bob McKenzie's Twitter, all the fan was doing was vigorously applauding Rypien's exit from the game. Rypien's gotta get at least a couple games for that. McKenzie thinks even more than that.

TSNBobMcKenzie Factor in inflation, cost of living allowances and diminished tolerance for this stuff and I think Rypien is looking at floor of 5 games.

5 games i think would be a little to much for just pushing some fan. Nobody was injured. Personally It would be great if a player got mad enough to push me like that lol Ofcourse I say 5 games is too much but at the same time I dont know if he has had suspensions before or if this is his first no no

wow. I just watched the video. The fan was simply clapping as Rypien was exiting. It was a young lad too, looks like a teenager with his dad. The worse part? They got kicked out!

It wasn't just a "push" it was more of a grab and shake about to throw a fist.

I can pretty much guarantee with absolute certainty that if this really happened to you or your teenage son, you'd be singing a different tune.

It's not just the physical activity (which was WAY out of line) but the NHL can't resurrect its image if it's players start manhandling fans. Just on that alone Rypien should get more than 5 games. Factor in it was a teenager, that could factor in a few games, too I would think. Just a stupid, stupid move on Rypien's part.

yea, no kidding... I highly doubt anyone would want an NHL tough guy to come after them...

The fact of the matter is, this paints a black eye on the NHL and luckily it didn't escalate worse, but this kind of behavior can NOT be allowed by the NHL... I say 5 games and a hefty fine would be fitting...

Exactly. I mean if you didn't end up getting hurt it'd make a pretty cool story, and if you did end up getting hurt you could probably sue, but at the time of the event happening I'm pretty sure just the shock of a player trying to attack you would be pretty hard to handle.

From what I understand they were moved to different seats after the altercation, they weren't kicked out because I think we can all agree from watching that they didn't deserve to be.

Oh, good. By the video it looked like they were being escorted out. Hopefully they got moved to seats just as good if not better considering what they probably paid.

I disagree - if my teenage son would be anything like me, he would either really enjoy it, or really deserve it. Either way, the story you would have to tell from then on would be worth it. SIGN ME UP FOR ONE OF THOSE!

lots of commentators and fans have been saying this really hurts the league; i think kraus called it a black eye in this thread. i disagree. the nhl has seen many fan attacks in the past. rypien even restrained himself and had kept going. so its not near as bad as past incidents where players made it into the stands and were very aggressive. additionally, hockey is not the only sport dealing with the issue in general. all the time you see nfl players giving fans the finger and getting into verbal altercations. since there was no actual injury or dramatic factors, i see an incident like this as not much more than incidents like that.

I personally don't believe it gives the league a black eye. The 'nucks? Yeah. Rypien, for sure. However, just because this isn't the worst thing to ever happen between a fan and a player doesn't mean Rypien should walk away from it. The fan did nothing compared to altercations in the past (throwing things at the player, jumping into the box). Rypien just short of attacked a spectator for being exactly that; a spectator. I don't know about you but when I go to a game and I am close enough for a player to hear what I have to say, I think of everything in the book. It is part of the game. I shouldn't have to fear that a PROFESSIONAL might try and pummel me.

I say 10 games and the nucks need to assess if he is really worth keeping on the team. Perhaps the ducks could use him

I have to wonder what the fan said to piss him off. I can't see how he would do that just cause the guy was clapping.

Also why is there no cover on that tunnel. I thought they did that on visiting team benches.

i think something over the line must have been said. these players deal with tons of belligerent fans every night. so i find it hard to believe the altercation was unprovoked. additionally, malhotra seems to have heard it too as he gestures that the fans should be tossed. bieksa seems very peeved and even smacks his stick on the glass at the folks 10 or 20 seconds later. it doesn't necessarily justify what rypien did, but i think lots of people are trying to play the poor innocent helpless fan card. and 99 times out of a 100, then fan gets whats comin to them.

Darren Dreger's predicting 8-10. Also seen comments in regards to the Tortorella 1 game suspension in the playoffs for tossing a water bottle at a fan saying that from a suspension standpoint 1 playoff game=5 regular season. Rypien gets at least 10 games IMO.

I agree, the fan probably did say something that was wildly inappropriate, but even that doesn't give Rypien the right to touch him at all. Should the fan not have said it, probably, but Rypien is a professional that is payed to play the game and that was just very unprofessional of him.

dude, sticks and stones. I highly doubt this guy said something more terrible than what players say to eachother every game.

It's the fans job to irritate the opposing player. What would you think if after taunting a goalie by chanting his name he went ballistic? What is the difference? Words are words.

A couple videos on the incident. The first one the commentators say the fan touched him, which is incorrect.

Another perspective. These commentators know whats going on.

Interesting how it's almost like homerism. I'd give Rypien 3 games, you just can't let your emotions take control over your judgement. If he hurt someone then the suspension gets doubled, but couple 3 games with a 5k fine and I'd be happy.

I think Rypien gets like 3-7 games, though I'm leaning more toward the side of around 3. He grabbed the fan but he didn't even throw a punch. Given the lack of severity of the issue I don't see a suspension being for that long. I think McKenzie is looking way too much into the small details. Tempers were high, fan wasn't hurt, nobody threw a punch, fan was given a better seat. There was nothing that egregious about it given the fact that we know he'll get suspended for an altercation with a fan.

Exactly. Its not the act of shoving or how much damage was done to the fan. Its the fact that a player reached into the stands with intent to cause harm. Under no circumstances should a player even think about touching a fan.
