Flyers General Manager Paul Holmgren gave the following update on the status of Chris Pronger:

“After consultation with respected concussion specialists Dr. Joseph Maroon and Dr. Micky Collins, it is the opinion of both doctors that Chris is suffering from severe post concussion syndrome. It is the recommendation of Doctors Maroon and Collins that Chris not return to play for the Philadelphia Flyers for the remainder of the 2011-12 season or playoffs. Chris will continue to receive treatment and therapy with the hope that he can get better.”

wow, huge blow for them. They better hope Giroux doesn't get the same treatment.

It appears as though Philadelphia Flyers captain Chris Pronger will be out longer than expected.

According to Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet.ca, the Flyers captain will be sidelined indefinitely. While there is no timetable as to his return, Kypreos went on to say via his Twitter account that Pronger's season "may be in jeopardy."

Back on Dec. 9, Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren told reporters that Pronger "has struggled with other issues that are concussion-like symptoms."

Pronger was out of the lineup for six games and 16 days after suffering an eye injury on Oct. 24 when he was hit in the face with the stick of Toronto's Mikhail Grabovski. He eventually rejoined the team and maintained his usual defensive role.

In a 6-4 loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Nov. 19, Pronger actually played a season-high 26:41. In addition to his eye injury and concussion, Pronger also underwent arthroscopic surgery to clean out his left knee in the summer. He's been limited to 13 of the team's 29 games this season.

Pronger met with Dr. Joe Maroon and Dr. Mickey Collins on Wednesday in Pittsburgh for further evaluation on his head injury.

"I just didn't feel well, I didn't know what it was," Pronger said on Dec. 9. "I never felt like that before with headaches and nausea, and that stuff. I had a concussion baseline test and passed that … I got lightheaded, had headaches, you're nauseous."

Twitter is ablaze with speculation that Pronger is done for the rest of the regular season and the playoffs.

As a person who's had a serious concussion before in sports, I cringe when I hear "severe post concussion syndrome". As much as I dislike Pronger I wish him nothing but the best in his recovery and hope he makes it back to the Flyers healthy next season.

I can't even imagine what it's like to experience what must feel like constant headaches and nausea. I get an occasional migraine headache and feel like I am going to die. I can't even begin to fathom what a constant, never ending migraine must feel like.

Pronger may be a giant ****** on the ice, but no one deserves this kind of pain.

Exactly right. I have always despised Pronger as a player; but I would like nothing more in this instance than for him to make a full recovery, and be symptom free.

I don't think there are more concussions, I think that we hear about them more because they are being reported more thanks to research into their effects. 5-10 years ago no one really cared about concussions and the effect they had on players, but now that we know that multiple concussions can severe affect a players life long after they've retired, there's more awareness and, thus, more reporting on it.

Let's see. Dr's from Pittsburgh, telling Pronger that he should sit out for the rest of the season including playoffs. Hmm......

I can only think that this can't be good for Pronger at all. Very rarely can a doctor put a timetable on concussion symptoms. Something here is telling me that an MRI or CAT Scan showed some damage that could be life threatening, or at the very least any further injury could cause serious life altering effects. I can't see them putting him on the shelf for 5 to 6 months, without something being seriously wrong. It's just not going to seem right without Pronger in the game anymore. My best to him on a recovery and a fruitful life away from hockey.
