On paper, the Franzen, Datysuk, Bertuzzi line looks like a really formidable line; Datsyuk with two big bodies that have great hands, great vision, can skate, can shoot, and are generally tough to play against.

While there was a lot of production from that line, it baffles me that there wasn't more. I thought they'd have much higher numbers.

What do you think?

Playoffs or regular season?

They were a pretty awesome line the first half of the season. Franzen looked like he was on his way to 40+ goals, Datsyuk was having another awesome year and Bertuzzi looked fired up.

Then Franzen kinda stopped caring, Datsyuk had knee surgery and Bertuzzi kept doing his thing but wasn't as effective anymore.

If we land Parise next year, put him with Datsyuk and give Franzen a VERY short leash on that line, we could see greatness.

Franzen is one huge enigma to me. He's got all the tools to be a big star, and he's got a background as a hard-working 4th liner, plus he's a swede and swedes aren't known to be divas. Yet he can still be completely out of it for entire games or stretches of games. I wonder if his knee problems have messed with his confidence. Whatever his problem is, I say give him next season to turn it around or get rid of him.

I disagree with much of the bolded, especially the tough to play against part.

While at one time in their careers that was true of both players, I think that teams have found out that if you take away the middle of the ice, these guys will be reluctant to go there. Teams will let Bertuzzi skate along the boards and around the net with one hand on his stick all day long.

Like others, I'm not wild about the Bertuzzi re-signing. Parise would give the Wings an incredible amount of possibility and potential production on the top line, especially if Franzen can transition into somewhat of the Holmstrom mold of crease front goal scorer.

I think they should move Franzen back to a center. He was a better player in that role than out as a wing.

Yikes, the last thing Franzen needs is more responsibility in the defensive end. We have plenty of two-way centers, we need him to be a scoring winger.

bert hasn't got the stuff anymore to be an effective top 6 player on the wings. demote to third line as soon as possible. Franzen can be traded or come back. I'm undecided. If it meant getting a younger and more talented sniper in a larger package I'd see Franzen go.

Is there a kickstarter campaign for Jakub Kindl to never play another NHL game?

Bertuzzi is just hit or miss. Is great on one-on-one opps. and down low or by the net, but is still penchant on taking awful penalties every now and then.

Franzen no matter how much people might not like him still led the team in goals, and is possibly the team's biggest game breaker with a big goal at the right time.

can you name any big game breaking goals this season???

(please dont use the blues game early in the month. they should have just given those to pavel as he served them up on a platter)

I love Maltby, but to say he wasn't a ****** is a dis-service to his career of douchebaggery.

Not off the top of my head, but no matter what of the 20+ goals I might attempt to show, you're going to probably say that doesn't count or whatever or come up with different criteria.

He still has that potential no matter how much people want to deny it in here.

that aint my style. the only reason i mentioned that blues game is it was about the only one down the stretch he impacted the scoreboard but in my eyes even that game was pretty poor. and considering there was much debate after that single game about franzen getting into playoff mode, i figured lots of people might want to point to that game as an example.

my problem with franzen is two fold. first he is one of those guys that looks super lazy on the ice. sure looks can be deceiving, but i think based off how many other people feel that way, there might be something to the sentiment. it pains me that the dude has so much size and skill and plays like a disinterested girl... the other is that he signed that giant contract and now has to live up to it. he led the team in goals but was only 4th in even strength goals. jiri hudler had 5 more even strength goals yet he makes like a third of the salary and is hated by most of the site. franzens role is to score goals. and he couldnt even hit 30? thats despressing as a fan.

edit: and to your point about potential, sure he still has some. but he appears to have regressed. two poor playoffs in a row. (though he was injured last year right?) and 2 straight years under 30 goals. his peak was 34 goals. do you genuinely expect he has enough potential to best that in the coming years?

Fair enough. The disdain for him, while I get it, is a bit much right now and somewhat irritating to me so it's hard to depict who is on the extreme or not. So my apologies if I rubbed you the wrong way there.

I'm pretty much in full agreement with you. I can't think of a dominating game by him or just astounding goals, but you don't score goals by mistake, whether they are from 4 feet in on rebounds, snap shots from the faceoff dot, or getting perfect feeds from a one-timer.

I don't like on here, in general sometimes, that people get on players' cases for how they score goals, or how they should be scoring goals or whatever. You take them how you can get them.

And I'm definitely no Franzen apologist. He is frustrating at times but he's still one of the most important players on the team in terms of possibly putting goals on the board and changing a game outcome. Was he Franzen-like in recent playoff past (not including last season with the annoying sprained ankle)? No. Was he awful? No either.

This would be a great line if Bertuzzi was transported to 2004 and Franzen transported to 2008.

That aside, this line is a joke and so is Babcock for continuing to put them on the ice, instead of putting Datsyuk and Zetterberg together for the final games against Nashville. Don't know if he was just trying to prove a point or what.
According to my profile, my reputation is excellent. LOL.

EXACTLY!

Dats is Dats....Bertuzzi is a 3rd liner and Franzen is heartless...

Franzen ALWAYS looks like he is on his way to 40+ goals...then after January he scores 2 goals the rest of the season...(exaggerating of course, but he always "gets bored" the second half...now he is just horrible!)

Bertuzzi is just hit or miss. Is great on one-on-one opps. and down low or by the net, but is still penchant on taking awful penalties every now and then.

Franzen no matter how much people might not like him still led the team in goals, and is possibly the team's biggest game breaker with a big goal at the right time.

...and PLEASE do not mention the GWG stat...the way that stat is rewarded makes it the worst stat in the NHL.

ditto on the fair enough.

bottom line for me is this: we need more from the guy that is our top winger and goal scorer. so either what can we do to put him in a position to be more productive, or how can we move him to make our team better?

Horribly disappointed in Bert's play, especially after his performance in 2011. Not a single freakin point.

As much as I like the dude, would have rather had him either hang it up, or signed on maybe 800,000 - 1 year and play on the 4th line.

Bert shouldn't have to be on the top line. At this point in his career he will make a good 3rd liner. We all knew when he came back that he was NOT and never will be the player he was in Vancouver. (not paying him to be either) The Wings are not deep enough or good enough up front. Babcock said this at the presser. Bertuzzi was on the top 6 because we didn't have anyone else. We can't fill out our top 6 with guys from the minors either or shouldn't have to anyways.

On top of Bertuzzi and Franzen severely underachieving in the playoffs, I still have to think Datsyuk was quite a bit under 100%.. I haven't heard anyone come out and announce that he actually was injured, but he just didn't look to be playing at 100%. He still was able to make plays and be decent on the faceoff, but his shots never seemed to be up to par. I know Datsyuk has never been a "sniper" but it just felt like about 80% of his shots (especially from the slot) missed the net.. of course this could also simply be that Rinne was frustrating the whole team and he was trying to pick corners every time, but to me Datsyuk gets those shots on net at least 80% of the time.

Then again, this could have also been the fact that maybe Datsyuk felt like he had to do it by himself on that line and was feeling the pressure..

In any case, nothing would make me happier than seeing Datsyuk playing with a legit sniper next season.
