Zetterberg's Great But...

I think most of us would agree that Zetterberg is a great hockey player. I also think most of us would agree that Datsyuk is even better yet Zetterberg always gets a little more ice-time.

I guess Babcock must think Zetterberg is better because I can't think another reason why he would get more ice-time.

i think the intent is that they get the same ice time.. just dumb luck (penalties, injuries, someone won't come off the ice, or whatever) that Z or D just so happen to get 20ish seconds more per game; really not a big deal.

Ya this is a dumb thread in general, I just pointed out that 4 of the 6 games we've played this year Dats got more toi, but it was by like 1 shift, they basically get the same ice time, they are the top two lines, and they both basically get 20min/game

Zetterberg is better than Datsyuk in his own end imo, so he gets more PK time.

Actually this year Datsyuk has played 2:05 short handed and Zetterberg has played 1:29 shorthanded

Last year Datsyuk played 1:13 shorthanded and Zetterberg has played 1:04 shorthanded.

IMO Zetterberg is really good but Datsyuk is the best forward ever in his own end. Selke award voters probably agree that Datsyuk is better in his own end too.

The average difference is 34 seconds, or one shift. And it has decline over time.

it's not bothering me much, I noticed he consistently gives Z more time, it's just that I would think most coaches would play their best forward a little more than the second best rather than the other way around. All together Zetterberg must have played close to 1000 mins (which is the equibvalent of about 50 games for them) more than Datsyuk in games they have both played in.

The difference is even greater in the playoffs

2011-12 Z 23:05, D 21:17

2010-11 Z 21:59, D 21:09

2006-07 Z 22:44, D 22:03

Babcock must think Z is better

You need to factor in the players on their lines for all of those seasons, how often they were on the same line together, injuries and length of time missed, etc. There's nothing reflecting favoritism here at all because the differences are so small and there's a tremendous amount of factors outside of the numbers.

In the regular season the difference are so small but are a little bigger in the playoffs and so consistent that there must be some favoritism

Zetterberg is grittier and has a shoot first mentality. Datsyuk has the best hands in the game. He's also the best passer in the league. I don't know if it's fair to compare them, they compliment each other and that makes them both great.

They were at the same level when they were first developing on the team. But now, by far, Datsyuk is the more valuable player. He does things no other player can do. Have you seen his passing this year? He's a maniac. Zetterberg is very solid and a top player on the team, but Datsyuk brings more.

You mean when they both have been battling one injury or another during the playoffs? Though...

That one shift difference could mean the difference between winning the cup and being the also ran. :scared:

Since we'll probably finish 3rd in the Division and 6th in the Conference, I'm looking forward to some "so called" Red Wings fans to jump ship over to St. Louis or Chicago. Go annoy Blues and Hawks fans.

Some people's comments on the team after only 6 games is ridiculous. This is a very entertaining team to watch! They have a lot of grit (something these same people were complaining about in previous seasons). The Wings haven't played like this seen since the late 1990's, and they seem to be hitting their stride.

Just sit back and enjoy.
