Yea, well I don't think Crosby or Malkin are going to hit the market any time soon, so unless you enjoy watching mediocre hockey we're probably going to have to overpay someone at some point. Vanek is available right now. If not now, then when?

Ok... Lets just sit around and watch while Pittsburg signs Vanek for 7x$8 and then go on to play Chicago for the cup for the next forever while we battle with Toronto for the last playoff spot year after year... yippee!

They're welcome to him at that price. But they won't, because they're smart.

If we paid that much for Vanek we're still not going anywhere in the playoffs if we don't get a capable top 4 defensemen. This team can find the goals we need. We don't need to pay 1M dollars for 4.5 goals if he can somehow reach his career highs again

They won't because they don't have the cap space for adding more forwards and don't need goal scoring (as obvious). If you don't think they would give Vanek a 7 year deal at 7 per if they needed goal scoring you are insane. The cap is going up 9-10% next year, that alone covers the cost of him.

Getzlaf, Perry, Kessel are comparable to Vanek production, yet they get 8+ million per.

or

I know which one I choose and it's no knock on Abby at all.

You best not be knockin' on Abs :ranting::lol: . Vanek at 7 mil for 5 years would be pretty good. Even with the cap going up though, I wouldn't commit over 7.5 to Vanek. Though if we could dump some lesser players and get Vanek and Greene, then I'd be quite happy.

I would love Greene. Very underrated. Don't see NJ dealing their best defencemen though. But who knows.

Could see a guy like Mark Stuart or Cory Sarich as a depth deal. Both are pending UFAs and fairly low risk/cost.

I may have referred to the wrong Greene. I think it was Matt Greene from the Kings. Pretty sure that's who Rich was referring to as the big RH Dman earlier in the thread. I would be quite happy with Mark Stuart as well. As a big Jets fan, he's a buy that I know for sure would be an awesome D partner for Kronwall or Smith.

I'd pay Vanek over 5 years, just not 7. If he wants 7 years from me he needs to drop his salary at the end of the deal.

Ok some don't want vanek, fine. Do you have a better idea? if so, who and how? That is the key. let's play the game. Let's say we decide to go after a top 1/2 Dman. is there any available in UFA? No. That means trade. So what does it cost to get a Weber type Dman? Nyquist, tatar, and Smith just to start. Even that package isn't getting it done. if we do that, what does it do tour team? Our 20th ranked O just got worse. A lot worse. We don't have any scoring behind those guys that is ready to play.

No what bout the cap. After we resign everyone we have a full roster and 16 million or so left to spend. Spend on who and what? save for what? If our team next year is the current version minus the UFA's, that is nota very good team. Maybe compete for the playoffs. That is the best it can be. Buyout Franzen and now we have 20 million to spend. But again, on what? There are no bonuses for not spending up to the cap. ticket prices don't drop, cable bills don't drop. Team just sucks.

Its not like we need the cap for 2015. We only have a couple of RFA's to resign. The UFA class in 2015 isn't very good either. 5 really good players, but they will all get resigned. So again we have cap and no one to spend it on. If one or 2 UFA's do make it in 2015 we would still have cap space. If we have 20 million to spend this year, and we use 9-10 for Vanek, 3 for Greene, we have 7-8 left over. The cap in 2015 will be larger, so we should have 10-12 million to spend, minus what tootoo makes.

Pumpkin that is just BS. I can just here the phone call now..... pavel, this is Ken. Would it be ok if we signed vanek to play on your wing? We might have to pay him more than you. No ken it is not ok. I want to continue to play on a low talent team with no chance at winning the Cup before I retire........ Ya right.......

Thats just ******* stupid. If Datsyuk and Zetterberg are so insecure that their feelings would be hurt by the reality of inflation then maybe they're the ones that need to be fired. Seriously, how pathetic is that line of thinking? Are we not allowed to sign any free agents whose penises are larger than theirs either? Gimme a ******* break.

If every 30 year old, 40 goal scoring forward that makes it to free agency gets 7 million for 7 years, then that is what the market dictates their value to be. The cap keeps going up year after year. Do you think that elite player salaries are going are going to decrease for no reason whatsoever?

You want the Red Wings to return to their status of an elite club in the league, yet you dont want to pay elite free agents elite salaries to sign here. Ok. I guess we could make a trade for an elite player who is already signed. Oh, you dont want to give up the assets required to make it happen? Ok. I guess we could draft and develop our own elite prospects. Oh, you dont want to tank the season and be a bottom feeding cellar dweller for the next 5 years? Well then im all out of ideas, what do you suggest?
