UFA day looking up

I still don't get why people are so nervous about Niskanen. Sure he played with Crosby and Malkin. But here he'd be feeding Datsyuk, Franzen and Zetterberg (who may have a career year now that he is healthy). And maybe playing with Kronwall, one of the better offensive d-men in the league. If there's any player you take a risk on, its a steadily improving guy entering his prime years. Not a guy who was discarded by a good team for being half the player he once was (Boyle). Boyle reminds me of a depth signing, like Colaiacovo. Only it sounds like we want to pay him way more. Sure, short term is nice, but what if our young guys plateau below their potential and Niskanen continues to improve? We will have missed out on that chance and will go through the whole overpay thing in two or three years. I'm not sold on the kids being prime level contributors in two years. I'm just nervous about the idea of 7 years at $7 million, which is looking like what it's going to take to land him. That's a lot of coin and term to hand to a guy who hasn't proven too much yet.

Yes, but the rest of the sentence still doesn't change the overall meaning: That given the chance they would re-sign him. That shows you just how disconnected the Wings' front office is from the real world.

I apologize

The Wings will look to re-sign defenseman Kyle Quincey

Per the Red Wings official website

...and the rest of the sentence: ",but the 28-year-old will most likely receive a bigger offer on the open market than Detroit is willing to spend."

Shaman is a fitting name for you foretold this dastardly deed. I'm going to take a nice slice of crow on this one. There's plenty to go around if anyone else wants a piece.

Never did I think this would happen...

My impression is that Kenny understands the situation. We need a big name, and he's willing to go balls out for one, even if that means a trade. Stralman, Gilbert, et al. = Quincey II in his book, and he doesn't really want Quincey II. He wants a real difference-maker. And even if he doesn't, I've gotta think Babcock does.

Oh, honey.

It may seem impressive. But Shaman only deals in worst case scenarios and sooner or later some sort of “dastardly deed” has to come along.
