Las Vegas rumored to get an expansion team

Head of the Vegas minor league the said he didn't think the NHL would work. Too many people who live there work nights and/or don't have the expendable income to support a team long term. The echl team can do more with early and midnight games and dome promo stuff the NHL wouldn't/couldn't do.

Aside from obvious reasons, I am against this because I don't want an expansion draft. If there is an expansion draft, we will lost prospects to this adventure.

Wouldn't have the player agree to that first ? I mean they legally binded to a contract. Also I think the NHLPA would have more than a bit to say about that scenario :-)

Prospects aren't eligible for selection in an expansion draft. There are guidelines for who can be protected and what kind of players must be exposed (experience, positions, etc., and they have been different in every expansion).

Would who have to agree to what? In expansion situations, the contract is transferred from one team to the other, just like in a trade. And the PA will agree, it's 46 more jobs...

Well you have to keep in mind some of these guys (thanksfully) do have NTC/NMC and I highly doubt players would be thrilled to wave them for another non market, small budget team.

I'm starting to believe the NHL is gambling on Vegas just to raise the price for other potential and much more realistically markets.

How does any of that make sense? Sorry, I'm a businessman.

If they want more money out of Quebec or Seattle they'll just use Vegas as another option which is basically the NHL trying to increase their leverage.

So by your logic, sell a team in a crappy market will make teams in a good market want to buy? Sorry still makes no sense.

EDIT: Oh did the Vegas expansion fail? I'm sure we won't fail. (Any businessman willl know)

Didn't Winnipeg have to jump through hoops to get their team back? I recall the had to sell x amount of season tickets in advance for x amount of years to prove it would be a viable destination. Why not do that with Vegas, that way they can see before doing something dumb that it's something dumb, oh wait it's bettman we're talking about, he only sees the franchise fee $$$$

A team in Las Vegas would quickly turn into another Arizona Coyotes situation. Their ECHL team, the Wranglers, even voluntarily suspended operations for this season because they were essentially kicked out of their arena (not necessarily for attendance issues, but still). I would much rather see Seattle or Quebec City get a team if the league insists on another expansion.

its more than time for someone to step up and can that damn idiot and his stupid failed expansion ideas. A team in LV has to be the dumbest idea ever especially when Seattle and Quebec City are waiting for teams.

LV will make the Phoenix Coyotes look like a huge hockeytown.

The issue I have with expansion to QC is the possibility that either Detroit or Columbus is going to be moved back out West. If expansion does go down, I'd much rather LV, Kansas City or Seattle be given teams, with Florida relocating to QC.

Also remember the NFL is exploring the idea of putting a football team out there now as well.

Maybe that's why the nhl is trying so hard. To be the first major sport there?

Oh, darn! After selling 5,000 tickets in 2 days, they've sold less than 2,000 in 13 days. What's the over/under on how many tickets the NHL purchases? No word on how long they have to reach 10,000 to cement the expansion. Link.

If it takes two years then that's what the time frame is. Whatever it takes to get hockey in another non hockey market

Why would they veto? They're going to get a good expansion fee from a team that will probably be able to break even with casinos and what not

break even ? With no fanbase we've seen this story before. Most people in LV are working at noon/night so how would they schedule the games 2 pm ?

Well 7000 season tickets is nothing to sneeze at plus people who have time their team in town at the same team and casino and corporate dollars will also help.

Edit I assumed perhaps incorrectly these are full season tickets
