10/21 GDT - Red Wings 1 at Canadiens 2 (OT)

Our defense has been fine. We shouldn't be losing games where we give up 1 goal in regulation. Adding an offensive dman should help with some scoring but this team has need a legit winger for a long time as well. We're not going to get many more points from games we score 1 goal in

I agree with your point, but disagree with your premise. Our defense isn't fine, and that's partially why our offense isn't fine. Our transition game isf****** terrible. The defensemen can't get the puck up to the forwards consistently, so we never attack the offensive zone with speed (supposedly the big advantage our current team has).

They've been fine defensively, but in today's game that's not enough. You need offense from the back end.

But I'd love a scoring winger. And to get rid of some of these centers. And to get dopes like Abby off the top six forever. And a GM that would overpay on players that deserve it once in a while. And a coach who didn't act like scoring goals is only an incidental part of the sport of hockey. Those would all be nice too.

So you'd rather we be a run and gun team? The type that never wins cups?

Yes. No one is going to want to come here with 164 GF every year. Its a death sentence to a career.

btw, in the replay, what was E doing? He wasn't doing anything, he didn't even have a guy covered. He just floated in on the play and watched it happen.

Not sure which was worse - Quincey, or Ericsson.....Both screwed up equally IMO.

I honestly don't think it matters if abby has a skate in the crease or not if price initiates contact.Price goes left to right stops without making any contact, then leans in to get the call.

He's the master at drawing goaltender interference. He's had multiple goals waived off because he initiates contact with the player.

Naturally I couldn't find it on TSN's website anymore (404 not found) but Kerry Fraser wrote a piece on Price's exploiting the rule.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/puck-daddy/time-to-close-loophole-in-nhl-goalie-interference-rules-180155166.html;_ylt=AwrTHQwYGUdUKnEASmBXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTEzdHJrZG9lBHNlYwNzcgRwb3MDNARjb2xvA2dxMQR2dGlkA1NNRTQyMV8x

In the clip Price trips the Tampa player, then throws himself into the player again at the far post.

Wow, that call was brutal.

Hey, at least there's going to be a list of known divers in the NHL! =D

Right because those are the only two options. EITHER be the Capitals OR score a goal a game. C'mon.

I'm not saying that at all. I'm saying calling Babcocks system a soccer system is dumb.

I can't wait for the day to come when I wake up and hear Holland has traded for a top 4 puck moving defensemen. It's such a glaring, obvious hole on this team and Holland needs to make a move sooner rather than later. Enough is enough. It's been 3 years and counting he has been looking. Now we have a logjam of decent talent. Now we can actually make a trade that can be good for both teams where we aren't just giving them our garbage. A good scoring winger tho I can wait until the deadline

You guys are embarrassing. Quit whining about the zebra's. It's just the lowest form of complaining in sports.

The rule is the rule. Abby F'ed up and made contact with the goalie. Yes, Price leaned in for the call, but distinguishing that in real time is nearly impossible for a ref.

The no-goal is a moot point if this team could figure out the power play. If the Wings score even 1 tonight, they win.

As for crying about the defense, nope. They've given up fewer goals than all but 2 teams in the league. If you wanna complain about the offense from the back-end, that's a different story. It needs to be better. But defensive zone coverage has been fine. Lapses will happen to every team, every game. Overall, our back end has been more than adequate to win every game. Isn't that all you can ask for?

If you want to stand on your soapbox and blow a gasket over the lack of goal scoring, fine. Completely justified, and I will share your frustration. If you want to gripe about the bantam-level power play that has been on display, go ahead. Again, you are warranted. But the grumbling in regards to two or three Dmen every game is just a waste of finger strength and bandwidth. The defensive coverage and all members of the defense have been fine.

I think you're wrong, the Goalie has the right to any ice inside the blue no matter who initiates contact. Outside the crease it is whoever has the ice first. At least that has been my interpretation of the rules.

You didn't say that at all. You insinuated that he must prefer "run and gun" if he doesn't like Babcock's low scoring approach. You also insinuated that he would be wrong for preferring this, since it never works. But I don't see why he couldn't prefer the styles of any number of teams which are as good as we are defensively, and yet much better offensively. Teams like Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Tampa, Montreal, St. Louis, San Jose, Anaheim, or perhaps even Dallas?

We're all adults here and we know how to both articulate, and understand, insinuation. No matter how much you deny doing it after the fact. But there really can't be too much positive discourse on any subject if the second he criticizes the coach, you not so subtly pretend as if he's advocating for the dumbest, and least effective, of many possible alternatives.

Exactly. What's wrong with Pittsburgh and Montreal's styles? Fast and Loose instead of Fast and Stuffy. Its extremely stupid to make your goalie have to keep the other team to zero or 1 goal every game. Howard isn't my favorite, but I'm not gonna get upset at him when we keep scoring 2 goals a game because the coach is afraid to let the other team get chances. Howard is not Roy. If we had Roy, I'd like our current style.

After reading that article posted I think your right. NHL is horrible at making rules. They have all these damn loopholes.

Anyone have a video clip of the disallowed goal they could share. Nhl usually won't post the bad calls on the site cause they are embarrassed.

So basically if I have a skate in the blue paint the goalie could punch me in the back of the head if he wants, and it's my fault... Laughable.

Until that s***ty PP is fixed, this team is going to struggle.

We have no bomb from the point. Gotta have one.

Low scoring approach? Not sure any team advocates that

I wouldn't call any of those team run and gun offense, maybe Tampa and Ny, but they've turned corners recently. The real contenders: LA CHI BOS etc are all high possession teams.

I know what GF means, hence why I referenced it and the fact that my original point had nothing to do with it.

YOUR original point? You responded to me. GF is an abbreviation for "Goals For".

You're talking in circles. All those teams create more offense than Detroit and still play good defense. You were the one who brought up "run and gun" and how it didn't work. All he did was criticize Babs' preference for low scoring games. You were trying to make his argument appear wrong headed without coming out and saying it straight up. Now you're trying to obscure that fact by changing the subject.

The next time someone criticizes Babcock's "soccer" strategy, the correct response should be something along the lines of "what alternative do you propose" and not "So you'd rather we be a run and gun team? The type that never wins cups?". Then you could have a conversation about offensive vs. defensive strategies without all the not so subtle "your position is wrong" inferences.
