Where to stay in Detroit

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Hey Everyone, big fan of the forum. Figured this be as good of a place as any to ask! Planning on making the trip down to Detroit from Newfoundland in March ( Yes, I'm still a Cleary fan, yes I know he's washed up.) Wondering what's a good place to stay close to the stadium? Also what other things are there to check out to make the most of the trip?

Thanks!

When I'm in town, I always stay at the Double Tree inn, by Hilton. Reasonable prices. Walking distance to the Joe, 15 mins and 2 mins from the people mover. From there you can visit Greek Town, the Casino, Hockeytown cafe, etc. Nice little bar close to the hotel called the Anchor

As a fellow Newfie, I figured I'd chime in... I go down to the D every year to see a game or two and I usually stay at the Holiday Inn Express on Washington Boulevard. It's walking distance to the Joe, as well as Motor City Casino and HockeyTown Café. There is a great little bar in the hotel where you can go for a few pre game beverages and a bite to eat and there is also Cobo Joe's right along the way to the Joe, which has a great pre game atmosphere, always filled with Wings fans as well as the lowly opposition...

The Sweetwater Tavern has the best chicken wings on this (or any) planet. Hand to God. Their rib tips and beer prices are also quite good. I HIGHLY recommend getting a bite to eat at this place. And that's coming from a guy who unreservedly endorses exactly three other things: Wink Rust Remover, Inglehoffer Stone Ground Mustard, and Five Hour Energy.

It's at the corner of Congress and Brush, near the previously mentioned Holiday Inn Express.

Edit: Lafayette Coney is an acceptable alternative. But HEAVEN HELP YOU if you eat at American Coney, accidentally or otherwise.

Sweetwater Tavern, I remember seeing that place and wanting to check it out but we ended up going to the Hard Rock Café instead... Don't get me wrong the Hard Rock is good and all, but I've been there a million times. I'll definitely have to take your word Kip and check out the Sweetwater Tavern next time, for sure.

Seriously, go there and order the wings. Actually get two or three orders because you're going to want them anyway. I promise you will thank me afterward.

Great tip, Kip! ;). I will definitely check it out next time I come to the D. (It's been a few years, but it looks like I'll be able to swing a trip next season).

Always happy to help. This is a win/win. You guys get good food, and a great local business gets new customers.

Just getting a chance to check back here, awesome help thanks guys. Can't wait to check out the hockeytown cafe and try trying these chicken wings at sweet water tavern! This Cobo Joe's place sounds like a great spot for the old man to meet some oilers fans too and not get mocked for his Hall Jersey haha

Go to Cobo Joe's if you want to see firebreathing hotties, not collegial hockey talk lol.

I live right downtown. Ride my bike past the Joe every sunny day.

For hotels, I always recommend people go to Priceline and go to the highest star level (5 or 4, or whatever) and bid for a room right downtown at whatever budget you can afford. It's a little shifty because you don't know the exact hotel you will be staying at, but you will almost certainly land a nice room at a cheap price. Half the time you will end up staying in the Marriott at the Renaissance center, which is one of the places you have to visit while you're up here anyway. Other times you get the Double Tree right across the street. Both are walking distance from the Joe. Detroit has way more hotel rooms than tourists, so use this to your advantage on Priceline and book a sweet deal. But again, it is a little risky because you don't know exactly where they will put you.

Places to check out while you are here:

Best food: Green Dot Stables, Motor City Brewing Works, Mudgie's, and of course the world famous Slow's BBQ.

Fine dining: London Chop House (my personal favorite), La Dolce Vita (best brunch in the city, call for reservations).

Best bars: Cafe D'Mongo's (there is no place on earth like it, a must see if you are around on a Friday or Saturday night), Two James Spirits, Grand Trunk

I'm personally not a huge fan of Sweetwater wings, but everyone here does go crazy about them. Besides the places I've listed, there are a TON of other very memorable and cool bars and restaurants I haven't listed. One of the amazing things about Detroit is there are hardly any chain restaurants around, so everywhere you go is unique and an experience. The ones I have listed are strictly the "must sees."

Hope you enjoy your trip!

We have very similar taste. You listed off some of my favorite places to grab food in Detroit.

I recently stayed at the Rivertree for a game and yes it's close walking distance to the Joe, but nothing else. Greektown seemed like a hell of a walk from there. We made it to Old Shalalees or something like that, but it was a sketchy ass walk back. A bum assisted us for the majority of the walk keeping us on populated roads. Worth the $10 bones we gave him.
