kliq 3,755 Report post Posted June 24, 2018 Normally I'm against a buyout, but this one is peanuts. We save $1,250,000 this year, but both this year and next year suffer a $216,667 penalty. https://www.capfriendly.com/buyout-calculator/xavier-ouellet 1 joesuffP reacted to this

No room for him in GRs either. Buy him out, *presto* he's gone. K l8ter This was my thought as well. I'm hoping we're buying him out for the roster spot, not the cap space. We could just waive him and assuming no one claims him, send him down to Grand Rapids, but with there already being a log jam down there on defense, that would be a bad move. The buy-out could also be a favour to Ouellet. Gives him a fresh start. I'd like to see him get claimed, but even at $1.25M, that could be a little too high for some teams. With a buy-out, I can see a team signing him at close to league minimum for a depth 6/7 defenseman.
Wingnut1989 165 Report post Posted June 24, 2018 ya ok makin roster space makes more sense, just suprized they couldnt even get a 7th from someone, but i guess theirs alot of Dmen of that quality you can get without paying for.

Do players get their full wages when they get bought out? I assume they do, and the 216,667 is just our penalty against the cap? Anyway, I actually really like this move. Ouellet was one of the worst Dmen on one of the weakest D's in the league, and had the gall to ask for a fresh start somewhere else? Yeah, buy him out. If your heart isn't with this team good riddance, you're not anything to write home about anyway honey. I hope the other kids are paying attention. Ouellet may struggle to find an NHL job now. Assuming Hicketts makes the Red Wings out of camp, and Hronek is sent down to start the season, I would assume some combination of Cholowski, Hronek, Sulak, Saarijarvi, Lashoff, Russo, McIlrath. I'm sure there will be other depth guys signed as well, but that will likely be the top 7 barring a trade. Renouf is a UFA, and I doubt he's brought back. 1 kliq reacted to this
Neomaxizoomdweebie 3,083 Report post Posted June 24, 2018 (edited) https://www.capfriendly.com/buyout-faq https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compliance_buyout If the player is under 26 years old, then the team may pay the player just one-third of the remaining contract value.[1] In ordinary-course buyouts, the team's NHL salary cap hit for the player is stretched over a period of twice the remaining length of the contract. Ok, so if he signs for anything less than $866,666 he'll actually be making less money next year than he would have been.
