What do with Husso?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

When we come out of the break assuming Lyon starts Wednesday.

Do we put Husso in a game after the break? The next back to back is in March and the schedule is pretty much every other night so what do with him.

I hate to see the rhythm of the team get messed up but he is/was our "#1".

Do we want to  risk losing 2 points we need if Husso poo poos himself?

Or ride the Lion till he falters and then put in Husso?

Lyon is going to remain the team's starter unless he falters. BUT he can't play as much as he has been and have any gas left in the tank for playoffs. He's going to need competent backup and there's a big opportunity for that to be Husso unless we make a move from outside the organization prior to the deadline.

Husso looked pretty solid the two games he played before his injury. I hope that was because the team was starting to come back around. Nevertheless, he'll get a chance to play a role in this team's success and I sure hope he grabs it because we don't want to overtax Lyon down the stretch.

If you thought the goalie market was fuqqed last summer, its like triple fuqqed this summer.

Only guy Id be interested in is Pavel Francouz. But talk around the Avs watercooler right now is hes likely going to retire this summer due to the severity of his injuries.

Trading for someone is probably going to be a nightmare with all the other teams hunting. But Markstrom, Ullmark, and maybe even Gibson, will probably be on the market if we are willing to pay the price...

For this reason, do we keep Husso another year? It's still too early to bring up Cossa IMO. Lyon will need someone who is at the bare minimum capable of taking over all duties when he falters. If Husso can still do that would be a big gamble.

Here's my proposal:

DET: Lyon/Husso

GR: Cossa/Gylander

And then bring in KHLer Ilya Konovalov and let him compete for Lyon and Hussos jobs.

Holland drafted Konovalov in the 3rd for EDM. Was a great prospect, but came over to NA during covid, lost the AHL starting gig to Stuart Skinner, and immedately terminated his contract and went home. Since then hes been putting up big seasons for Moscow Dynamo, and hes still only 25.

If we can land Feds as an AC I would hope he can lure some russian kids like this into the program.

On waivers today

We should have done this in April.

It would have given us a lot more options in the offseason. Maybe we wouldn't have had to give guys away for free to clear up cap space, or  wait until the last minute to sign RFAs.

We couldn't have known then. Lyon is a career AHL journeyman. You have to assume last season was a flash in the pan if anything (even if it wasn't). Talbot is 37. He could fall off a cliff any day now. And on top of that, Husso was arguably our best goalie in pre-season.

Regardless, I doubt we've seen the last of Husso because of 1 game. SY gets to acrue more cap without his contract off the roster. Meanwhile, Talbot looked real steady and he should be able to handle for a while. My only worry with him is his lateral motion doesn't look the best. But as long as the team can contain offenses so he's not having to dive post to post we should be okay.

Then why sign Talbot at all if we already had 2 usable goalies? It just feels like there is a lack of decision making going on that is holding us back at times.

Because Lyon was a question mark, and Husso with his injuries was also a question mark. Therefore, get a 3rd one as insurance.

When you listen to Derek and Steve talk about running 3 goalies, IMO it sounds like they like this system. They certainly fell into it last year, but it seems like they were pleased with it and are happy to keep it going.

And TBH it's kinda smart. Teams don't really have roster space to claim goalies. So Steve can waive and recall at will, until another team is in need of an injury replacement.

I see Steve doing this system until basically our Vasilevsky emerges.

If anything we should get a FOURTH goalie.

This was an obvious LTIR opportunity that wasn't capitalized on.  The Red Wings have a GM that's pulled the wool over the hockey world's eyes.  Is he an awesome scout and player character evaluator?  Yes.  Is he a good GM?  Absolutely not.  A good GM wouldn't need 3 Assistant GM's.  That screams lack of ability to me.  He should have one GM that knows the paperwork part of the business inside and out.  That's understandable.  A former player that has zero college/business experience should have an assistant that does.  But the Red Wings would be well to do to get the SCAM moved to the right position for him (Head of Scouting) and bring in a hockey mind that knows how to manage a roster and utilize his Assistant GM to strengthen it at ideal opportunities.  The last 2-3 years have been plagued by roster MIS-management during the season and during UFA.  Yzerman has excelled at the draft.  He's a master when it comes to detecting a player's work rate/dedication and using that to forecast his ceiling.  But he's an absolute imbecile when it comes to seizing an opportunity that comes along once every twenty years (Lindholm in UFA, Broberg/Holloway in Offer Sheet) and building a roster that contains his 1st round picks and allows these younger players to develop into their own around the veterans worth their salt.  I like Stevie as a Detroiter and liked him as a player, but he's not doing well as our GM right now.

Stop being regarded

1 game. Cap purposes. He'll be up again. It's alarming to me how few of you are able to grasp the bigger picture.

This one did not age well

Hey Scott. If Husso is playing in GR, guess what? He isn't injured.
