LeftWinger 5,061 Report post Posted October 7 (edited) Weird because with Watson they had 13 F, 7 D and 3 G to give them their 23 player roster. What would the point of waiving him be? Edited October 7 by LeftWinger

Because if they play him against the Rangers, Rempe will just knock the rest of his teeth out. Austin Watson isn't going to make this team TOUGH to play against. He's just going to be a tough guy that doesn't get any ice time. Playing Kasper, Danielson, ASP, Cossa, MBN, Edvinsson, Seider, and Raymond is going to make this team tough to play against. 1st round picks are hard for the other teams to play against. Not beer leaguers on a 2-way NHL contract.

Didn’t Lalonde go 11 forwards in some games last year because he thinks the solution to having too many bad defensemen is to play them all? 1 1 stephen-gregory-yzerman and Rick D reacted to this

What would the point of waiving him be? Just a good time to do it. He's not going to get claimed with so many other players on waivers and teams working out their final rosters. It also saves the Wings 500K, and Watson will be waiver immune for a month if he clears. It's alll paper transaction, he's not actually going to GR, and will be recalled on paper before the first game.

By dumping Poolman they no longer have any players on LTIR and can start to acrue cap space. By the TDL they will likely have acrued more space than Poolman would've given them on LTIR. The Avs on the other hand already have doods on LTIR so it's no bother really to take another. Kinda a whack system if you ask me, I'd prefer the simplicity of a hard cap instead of calculating every teams cap hit everyday. But whatevs. 23 minutes ago, LeftWinger said: Means nothing really. He cleared waivers today, so he has to be assigned to the Griffs now. He's likely still practicing with the Wings and he'll be a scratch for the Griffs until Derek decides to use him. Which is probably Thursday. I think this because Watson explicitly stated he wanted a 1way NHL contract. He didnt get that, so maybe he caved, or more likely IMO Stevie talked him in to a 2way for cap purposes, with the promise he wouldn't actually be assigned to the Griffs. But I could be wrong and this is to give Kasper a chance to play. If so, Marco would be called up Thursday. Or they don't intend to play Watson until an injury occurs. If either of those are the case we probably should actually send Wats to GR so he can stay in game shape. We'll see Thursday!

Unlikely Watson agreed for cap purposes. He was assigned to Grand Rapids mightn report there but hes still getting the AHL salary of the 2way while hes not on the Wings roster. weekly salary in DET- $14.9k weekly salary in GR- $3.8k

Newsy just said in todays media availability that this is Thursdays roster. So no intention on bringing up Wats or Kasper to play yet. Looks like SY is gonna optimize his cap to the fullest this season... which means he probably expects playoffs and TDL acquisitions. Cool. So Watson probably does report to GR for Fridays game. He's probably the first callup when injury strikes.
kipwinger 8,650 Report post Posted October 9 Watson is this team's Aaron Downey. Sometimes he'll play for GR and sometimes he'll get called up to Detroit. I doubt he was intended for a full time roster spot.
