#2053627 "We respected the other guys a lot more than they do now."

Posted by thegerkin on 28 October 2010 - 01:24 AM

He's absolutely correct. The obvious difference between today's game and Richard's generation is the extra safety equipment. Players these days feel they can throw the elbow because the other guy has a helmet on or get their stick up high because the other guy is wearing a shield. The extra equipment gives today's players the feeling that they can go out and just plain wreck the other guy. As far as the hits from behind, it needs harsher enforcement of the rules. Some players think they are just finishing their check but that's just a poor excuse.

#2044849 Kirk Maltby to announce he is retiring

So bummed to hear this :( Malts was as much a part of the Wings identity as anyone. He will be missed. Thanks for the years of service in the trenches, Malts!

We need a strong start tonight. Ozzie will be fine. Let's roll 4 lines all game long!

If anything, the good old multi-repeat commercials are the most annoying. f*** Sam Bernstein, the cross-eyed kid, his shyster son, and the dame. They are way more offensive than anything in/on the rink.

I don't give a damn about people's opinions about Malts, I LOVE to see him out there face-washing and just being a pain in in the ass

Ummmm, just turned on the tube and all I'm getting is af****** Tigers game....wtf???

Try channel 901 (Comcast FSD+). Only TV feed I could get, as the NHL HD feed was blacked out for me.

Pavs is the man. Makes me so proud to be a Red Wings fan when one of our guys does something so unselfish as to make others lives just a bit better.

#2036010 Hit on Franzen worthy of suspension

Posted by thegerkin on 23 September 2010 - 08:46 PM

This kind of crap just shouldn't happen in the preseason. Period.

This crap (knee-on-knee especially) shouldn't happen ANY time. It's a cheap, cowards move. Orpik should be sitting as many games as Franzen is out.

#1976156 There are 7 games in a series

Posted by thegerkin on 05 May 2010 - 12:29 AM

To beat the Sharks and avoid being swept, we need to be on our best behaviour. I wasn't able to watch the first period, but what I saw in the 2nd and 3rd were 3 legit penalties that shouldn't have been taken (another was garbage, but I'm happy if we only have 1 garbage call per game). We have been undiciplined, and yes I know there are 7 games in a series, but if we don't stop the senseless penalties, we're not going to see that 7th game.

#1973054 Game 3 Playing Style Matchups

PENALTY KILL

An immediate change I would make would be on the Penalty Kill. I would take the front PK'er and get on top of Pavelski. The guy is single handedly killing us on the PK. I know the forward's job in a diamond/square PK is to try to take away passing lanes, but all the Sharks are doing is throwing the puck back to Pavelski for a hard slapper from the blue line. I would want the forward to be more aggresive (yes, I know it opens up the center of the ice if Pavelski is able to make the pass, but it's a calculated risk. The 3 PK'ers down low are doing fine. Someone needs to rush Pavelski, make him a second or third choice instead of the default power play shooting option.

BLOCKING SHOTS

Detroit needs to be careful blocking shots, especially fakes. If they get duped, that entire quadrant is free for the power play shooter to skate in to the slot. Some may disagree about being agressive at the point, but we have to change it up. Maybe a hard press half the time, keep Pavelski on his toes. If not, I have a feeling he'll break the 2-goals a game in a row record that he currently shares with Super Mario.

POSITIONING

They need to focus on positioning and getting beat to the puck. I know it's a vicious cycle: Take a penalty, have to PK, too tired to attack, rinse and repeat. They need to keep moving their legs and beating the Sharks to the puck. I know that's Hockey 101, but it's AS CRUCIAL as winning face offs.

#1973049 OHL Player lays out opposing goalie

Posted by thegerkin on 04 May 2010 - 02:01 AM

I saw that earlier (I think it was a link from Yahoo). As the caption said, guess he didn't feeling like playing in that game. The goalie just laughed it off. Some of the comments about Archibald, the dumbass who ran the goalie, were pretty damn funny. Archibald appears to be African-Canadian (bear with me and my PC-ness ugh) with one ugly ass blonde afro-hawk. A comment left was:

Man, normally a hair cut like that says "I make good decisions"

On his way off the ice, he was chirping with some fans and tugged at his name-plate like he's a tough guy. Real tough, bowling over the Michelin tire man haha
