#2649358 Miller Out With Lower Body Injury

I'd be okay with that. Either way -- with Miller and/or Helm -- you're looking at some man games lost due to injury. ...so jettison Andersson and give CALLAHAN a shot.

I wouldn't mind keeping Helm, but I really don't want to pay what I think we're going to have to pay to keep Helm.

I do like his versatility, but I don't think he's worth much more than what he's currently being paid and no offense to the guy, but he's a third and fourth line guy. Not top 6.

I'm not really pro or anti re-signing Miller, but if it came down to signing one of either Miller or Helm, I pick Helm every time, even taking into account the difference in salaries. I was really hoping that we would groom Ferraro into a Miller type player, but that's obviously not the case. If we decide to have a 4th line of Miller - Glendening - Helm next season I would be okay with that. As long as Andersson is nowhere near the lineup, Helm is primarily used as a 4th line penalty killer and Jurco is a mainstay in the top 9...

Either way, I hope our PK is able to get back on track while Miller is out and hopefully he has a speedy recovery and can get in some games before the playoffs...

Edit: Posted too quickly / Spelling

I want Callahan and Athanasiou on the club next year. Probably rotating in on the fourth.

No Miller. No Helm. No Andersson.
If we're resigning any of them it's Miller, but honestly I think the injuries are starting to pile up.
Helm is trade bait for the deadline.

#2649114 Kronwall out 2-4 Weeks after Knee Scope

The time off for Kronwall is something Detroit knew was coming, and coach Jeff Blashill told DetroitRedWings.com’s Bill Roose that Kronwall’s surgery was mapped out to coincide with the all-star break. The Red Wings’ break is seven days, Jan. 26 to Feb. 3.

To be honest, I haven't a clue.  They've got injuries on the blueline and they want depth at Center.

Armstrong obviously wants some flexibility because he doesn't think he's going to be able to retain Shattenkirk at the price he will cost to re-sign.

So, trying to ship him Ericsson is seemingly out of the question, even though a solid stay at home guy to pair next to Parayo on that second pairing is exactly what the Blues need.  (I know LGW doesn't think Ericsson is that guy, but honestly, I beg to differ.)

Maybe you start with Quincey - a guy on an expiring contract who can easily slot in there on their second pair and you add someone like XO, Sproul, or Jensen. Not saying that just those two players alone would get it done, but if I were Holland, those two options would be where I'd start.

Wait. What am I saying... we already shipped him Nedomlel right?  I'd like my future considerations right now, in the form of Kevin Shattenkirk.

#2649089 Brian McGrattan

Kudos Smite.  I thought all the McGrattan threads had been shuttered...

I really wanted to start a new thread titled "God Emperor Brian McGrattan Gets Knocked the EFF Out" but thought otherwise.

To go beyond this scary incident:

There have some gnarly deeds in the world of hockey over the last week or so...

Linesman punching kid. Trainer comes out and spears linesman.

Gudbranson fights Hendricks to avenge Ekblad hit.

Arizona and the Blues (?) fight after the final buzzer.

I know we've discussed fighting and the NHL ad naseum around these parts, but instead of discussing it in the Ericsson thread... how about here?

Such is the pending UFA gamble!
Do you move said player now when you can get a high(er) return with teams jockeying for a long playoff run?
Do you wait until the draft when season is over and only a smaller bidding war goes on with NO teams looking for that final umph to get to the Cup?
Do you wait until July and risk losing said player for zero, nada, nilch?

...or in the case of Stamkos/Tampa do you keep him for your own, hopefully deep playoff run and sign him after he realizes how good he actually has it with the Lightning?

I will s*** myself twice I we land Stamkos. That's like 200%!

#2648902 Ericsson, our Giant Teddy Bear

Posted by e_prime on 19 January 2016 - 08:03 AM

I agree kliq. ...and for the record I wasn't trying to be contrarian. I just think there's a really really long way to go before we see fighting completely eliminated from the game.

As far as Ericsson goes, I'm going to reiterate that he needs to focus. Use the big body to muck in the corners, clear the crease, and keep his game as simple as possible. He's not a guy I want to see pinching in on the play or getting fancy with the puck. I also don't mind seeing him drop them every so often but I *do* like the fact that he often times just ignores the physical challenges and stares the guy down.

#2648827 2016 Trade Deadline Thread

...there goes the topic...

There's nothing wrong with a little dose of reality around here.

...and the fact of the matter is that there is no "what if" when it comes to Lucic.  He ain't available.  Not for anything.

Actually, I lied. I know exactly why it happens.

It's because these guys covet other team's star players that play a particular brand of hockey they long to see again in Detroit. They convince themselves that these players must be acquired at any cost (other than, you know, actually parting with the assets that would be required to do so) They then scour the internet for any tidbit of information that somehow seems to support their fantasy. Inevitability they become irrationally upset at Holland when he fails to trade rape the 29 other GMs in the league. Good times.

Best of times?  Actually.  No.  Worst of times.

LA is 1st in their division and Lucic is playing well there. Not sure why anyone would think he is available.

Honestly, I'm waiting for Lombardi to somehow manage to void Dustin Brown's contract so that he can re-sign Lucic.

To get you have to be willing to give.  If you're only willing to part with the spare parts, you're not going to get a big scoring winger, or a top-tier defenseman. If you're not willing to combine quality player(s), quality prospect(s), and pick(s)... you're not getting Drouin, Byfuglien, Stamkos, Hall, etc.

Ladd would cost less.  Yandle would cost less.  Even then, people will be mad at what even Ladd or Yandle would cost.

People will be disappointed if those are our deadline acquisitions.  People will be mad if Holland stands pat.

Holland can't make all the people happy all of the time.
