    The truth of our decline.

I wonder why somebody who completely disagrees with the wings system, has zero faith in our veteran players, and thinks we are heading straight into the gutter, is even a wings fan lol.

I think you're underestimating a bit. You would be able to afford the Wings, Leafs, or Rangers by now.

A general, how I would build a team

How do you build a successful NHL team you ask? It's simple. I don't get why people think Ken Holland's so smart?? Forwards: 6mil-6mil-5mil 5mil-6mil-5mil 1mil-1mil-1mil 1mil-1mil-1mil 1mil, 1mil Defensemen: 5mil-5mil 5mil-5mil 1mil-1mil 1mil Goalies: 5mil 1mil ...THAT's how you structure a 70 million dollar salary cap in today's NHL. There are 11 players that you give about 5mil to (and three of them you could give 6mil to) - your top six forwards, your top four defensemen and your goalie. I don't care if you draft and develop them, if you trade for them, or if you sign them. You get them. That's where you need your elite talent. ...As for the rest of the guys, your bottom six forwards, your bottom pairing defenseman, your backup goalie, and your healthy scratches. None of these guys should be making more than 1mil a season. Most of them should be cheap, young, big, strong, fast, tough, hard-working ready-to-play draft picks that you make. They don't need to be able to score. They just need to be those things. And you can find those things anywhere in the draft if you're looking for them. If one of the guy's blows up and is in line for a big contract...you let him walk...and you call up the next guy. Simple as that.

    The truth of our decline.

OMG you are crazy and know nothing about the NHL if you think anywhere in the 70s for amount of games played is bad. 95% scoring percentage is nothing to frown about...we all should be jumping for joy because most players will never even dream of hitting that....its amazing that even at 30% decline from 5 years ago hes still barely below 100%....his numbers are also way more consistent than almost every other elite forward in the league (most shift way more than 30% across 5 years) . In 2007/2008 and 2008/2009 we also had a much more complete and well rounded team....If we had those teams every year around Dats he could probably go beyond 125% on an up year. Ovechkin 2007/2008 = 136% 2011/2012 = 83% decline of 53% ^ Whoa! By the looks of it Ovi is old and washed up like you think Dats is! Caps better trade him cause hes going nowhere but down. He's certainly not one of the top 5 players in league anymore or anytime soon! (sarcasm) Kovalchuk 2007/2008 = 110% 2010/2011 = 74% decline of 36% ^ Kovy is younger than Dats and decreased by 6% more over a shorter time span!... but wait look what happened this year! 2011/2102 = 107% ^ He's back up to his old numbers! Lets look at a guy older than Dats shall we! Selanne 2007/2008 = 88% 2010/2011 = 109% ^ Holy crap! At an age older than Dats he increased his numbers by 21%!!!.....but look what happened this year... 2011/2012 = 80% ^ The whole team had a bad year and he's down to 80%! Lets look at the top 2 forwards in each of the final four teams.... Kopitar 2011/2012 = 92% M. Richards 2011/2012 = 59% Gaborik 2011/2012 = 92% B. Richards 2011/2012 = 80% Kovalchuk 2011/2012 = 107% Parise 2011/2012 = 84% Whitney 2011/2012 = 93% Vrbata 2011/2012 = 80% By your logic none of these teams should still be in the playoffs.....The only one who did better than Datsyuk this year is Kovy and as we both know Kovy plays terrible defense compared to Dats and he's wayyyyyyy overpaid compared to Dats. All those players play worse D than Dats (besides M. Richards, but he only hit 59%)....And most are paid more than Dats.... problem is not Dats. Maybe we should just put the right pieces around him like we did in 07/08/09....a sniper like Hossa and/or a strong bottom 6 and allow him to excel again.

I wonder why you and others like you, who view disagreement with their catastrophic theories as resulting from stupidity, blindness or self-delusion, even bother to visit DISCUSSION forums. If you want your words to be read and not disagreed with, then go write a blog.

Holy Jesus am I ever sick of clicking on a new thread, all excited to read something new and then seeing the SAME things posted by the SAME people. I still love LGW but some of the new posters (yes my post count is low but I'm not brand new) are driving me insane. Also, number9 took the words right out of my mouth. "Can't win it all every year..."

    The truth of our decline.

Good lord, we were consistently among the top 3 teams the first half of the regular season till injuries plagued us during the second half and playoffs. And people like you take for granted that WE MADE THE PLAYOFFS....For pete's sake most of teams who DIDN'T make the playoffs are not going to be rebuilding. Why in gods name would we???? Guess What? Since 2009 we have been RELOADING...Kennys been waiting for the right FA's to hit the market....Farms been gettin riper and riper...We've allowed Helmer and Abby to fully replace Drapes and Maltby...Ericsson and Filppula are breaking out.....Basically the point is your thinking way too much in the short term.... We are not going to win every year....But we are going to be competitive EVERY YEAR. We run a system that allows us to do this and NOT have to rebuild. You'd think 16 years would enough be for people to realize this but apparently not. I swear sometimes I think you guys just want to see headliners like RNH and Landeskog come to this team and that's it. The numbers he "threw in our faces" were completely skewed to his point. We have some of the best numbers in the league. There is not even much I can say about that because they speak for themselves. Our numbers were still better than most this year and it was A down year. Emphasis on the A in "a down year". I'm all for a reality check. The team needed one and think the best thing that could have happened was us going out in the first round. Kenny got a little wake up and the players got a little wake up. Now lets take that reality check, add some depth this off season, and play like we want it. If we add Parise or Suter this off season (let alone both) I will feel baddddd for the other teams in the league lol. Those would be 2 HIGH caliber players added on to an already HIGH caliber team.....But good god sir this not a time to rebuild or even think about rebuilding...Unless somebody completely screws stuff up we won't be rebuilding for a longggg time.....reality checks are good but PANICKING IS NOT....at least act like u have some composure AGREED....and it's coming (Nyquist, Smith, Andersson, the rest of our stacked farm, not to mention the various FA's we are seeking) we just have to be patient is all. Can't win it all every year boys.

Please banks started to make a profit a few months after the bailout. I am sure the only thing that is holding him back are two things 1. He wants Detroit to pay for a portion of it 2. City Council are a bunch of corrupt f***s.

A general, how I would build a team

Before anyone jumps off of a bridge, this has nothing to do with any team. It is a general set of thoughts. What would I do in terms of team make up and roster control/spending if I was running a NHL team. Keeping some things in mind: 23 man roster and a 70 million $ cap, here we go. 1. Player experience/roster management. Ok we have a 23 man roster. It is impossible to have all 23 players between 27 and 32, which is the prime of most players careers. Not to mention the cost of having a team like that. My ideal roster would have 2 rookies, 2 second year, 2 third year, 2 fourth year, 2 5th, 2 6th, 2 7th, 2 8th, 2 9th, 2 10th, 2 11th, and 1 guy with 12 or more. By doing this you are keeping young and cheap plays coming in and managing the costs. If the average rookie is 22 when he makes the roster, this still keeps the majority of the players between 26 and 32. The prime playing years. Some of course come earlier and some later. 2. managing the cap. If you divide 70 million by 23, you spend 3 million per player. if you actual payroll looked like that you would have a pretty poor team. Also most rookies and young players don't make nor do they need to make 3 million per year. So where and how much do i spend? The backup goalie, 7th Dman, and the 13th and 14th forwards are all at 1 million or less. That is 4 guys of the 23. leaving 66 million to spend on 19 players. The starting goalie is in a 5 million per slot. The 1-6 Dman make the oppisite amount. IE the 1 makes 6, the 2 makes 5, the 3 makes 4, the 4 makes 3, the 5 makes 2 and the 6 makes 1. At this point I have allocated 30 million of the 70 and covered 11 players. Leaving 40 million for the remaining 12 forwards. The 4th line guys make 2 million each. This leaves 9 players and 34 million left to spend. The 6 remaining RW and LW each get paid 3 million. This leaves 3 players and 16 million to spend. The 1 and 2 C get 6 million each, and the 3rd C makes 4 million. That allocates all 70 million allowed for the cap. 3. Now i have never been inside of RW HQ. But I am sure they have a plan along these lines somewhere. Every company does. You have to know where the money is going etc..... Now some may want to spend more accross the board on the top line. So be it, everyone has their own opinions. But in the end, you still have to have 23 players and can only spend 70. later I will take these thoughts and tie these with the wings and their roster. I am sure that will be fun! LOL!

    Chances of landing Parise?

Holland can give him 10mil because he's one of only a small group of GMs who have owners that are willing to pay out on huge long term contracts AND has more than enough cap room to do so , all while being able to offer an environment that NHLPA polls indicates is highly desirable to players around the league. (and no, I don't care that cougar denies the results of said poll) Yes there are 30 teams who will want to take a run at Parise but only a handful have a realistic shot of landing him unless he's only looking for a short term deal or isn't interested in winning. I don't thing we have Parise locked down but the Wings are in a better position than most teams. Not signing him would cause a great deal of drama online but it's not like we'd be losing out on a generational talent. There are plenty of ways to improve the team outside of the 2012 UFAs.
