I mean, if Eklund, Hughes, and McTavish happen to be taken in the top 5 along with Power and Berniers, I'd say taking the goalie would be completely fine. Though I;d still rather see Johnson taken at that point. Ned definitely gives Yzerman time to draft goalies in later rounds and develop them.

Another big steal by Yzerman on this one. 3rd rounder and rights to Bernier (a UFA in 6 days who may not even agree to sign with Carolina. He did state not long ago he wanted to test the market) for the rights to Nedeljkovic, (an RFA who he promptly signed a two year deal for the exact salary Bernier was earning). Possibly solved our need for a true long term #1 if Nedeljkovic keeps playing like he did in the playoffs. I dunno how he does it, but i ******* love it!

To be fair, Yzerman didn't give up any young player or prospects, and didn't even have to give up a high pick. He literally traded a pending UFA that he wasn't going to sign anyway, and a late 3rd round pick, for a fresh 25 year old.

Yes. This is exactly why most of us have been against taking goaltenders high in the draft. You can always sign or trade for capable goalies without relinquishing premium assets.

A 25 yo starting goaltender is what you should use 3rd picks on. Better odds than drafting one.

You're comparing Buffalo (Botterill / Adams) to Detroit (Yzerman)? Eichel is a whiny little b****. Have you heard a single player being upset / wanting out of Detroit because of the rebuild? Serious question. I haven't. Have you?
I think they all know what's going on, and they trust Yzerman.
Anyway, we're getting away from the original point. It would not be wise to add any of the "big fish" in free agency to long-term, high dollar contracts. Yzerman is going to continue the low-risk, short-term, low dollar contracts this off-season, continue building through the draft, make a few savvy trades, and get this team out of the gutter the right way.

Now that we know Carolina isn't losing Jake Bean how do we feel about trading them Bertuzzi for Bean and a pick or two? They'd essentially be beefing up their lineup, replacing Morgan Geekie, and only losing a player they were already expecting to lose anyway.
To Detroit: Bean, 2022 2nd.

Exactly. And being just 3 years, contract expires when we'll have a much better top 6 center ready to take over, instead of having a declining 1 playoff goal Danault on the roster.

Might be a better option than Danault and Hyman...Only 3 years left - working for his old boss might bring some new life to Johnson.
