Finally the Walman trade seems to make sense. It wasn´t just a cap dump or Walman being some dickhead. Yzerman wanted #11 from Buffalo but knew they would ask for a kings ransom from a division rival. So he gave a 2nd rd pick to SJ for the trade up + Walman and will now get #11 for #15

Thank god the "Mo and Joe" show is over, and Seider is training with Stutzle in Mannheim. I have no problem with him returning to Germany if he's training with other top league players like this. @Jonas Mahonas is a troll idiot who should go back to making pizzas.

Who cares that he was the "consensus" top pick, I´m with @The 91 of Ryans on this one, Yzerman would have taken Stützle even with a #1 pick

you could play Määtä and Ghost and have Holl as seventh D. Anyway it´s one of the nicer problems to have. Can´t remember the last time we had a D corps that deep and potentially good.

Jonas clearly just looks at stats. He sees 'from Sweden, 5'11"', and makes the conclusion that he is a weakling Euro who cannot make anything happen on the ice. Just like he reads that Raymond spends the summer in his home country, therefore could not possibly be hitting up a gym there.

This is another instance in which I don't think we're seeing the same things. I saw Berggren making plays all over the ice that his linemates couldn't finish, not the other way around. At one point his linemates were Zadina and Veleno, there was no chance either of those dudes were finishing the plays he set up.

Nobody is suggesting the Tkachuk brothers. I'd take Jake Debrusk (as an example). I don't like the idea of Kane for a few reasons:
One, he almost certainly doesn't want to play here so we'd have to pay A LOT to change his mind. Recall that the only trade he was willing to entertain out of Chicago was to NYC. That's it.
Two, at this point in his career he's probably not better than Debrincat, but is better than Raymond. So either you play all three of those midgets in the top six (and lose every board battle you have) or Raymond sees his ice time diminish...which is obviously not ideal for his development.
Three, it's not even like you could flip him at the deadline for quality draft picks. He was so picky about his landing spot last year that Chicago lost all leverage and only got conditional 2nd round pick and a 4th. He has less trade value than most rentals and he's not going to put us over the top and/or sign longer term...so what's the point?

Edvinsson had surgery in May with an expected 4-6 month recovery time. He'll be in GR to get back into game shape.
It's ridiculous to expect a 20-year-old defenseman, who cannot put in work at the gym all summer, to step into the NHL and produce to start the season. Let's be realistic here.

100%, and I don't think enough is made of the fact that having top six centers that score 70-90 pts and play excellent defense is a better situation than having someone that scores 100+ that gets shut down and/or can't stop other (marginally less talented) opposing forwards. Yzerman is building a powerhouse, the right way, and I think we're only a year or two of development away from seeing that strategy bear fruit.

But this year seems like the first year with a deep roster. Neither Copp nor Compher are good 2C´s but around average. That gives us for the first time in years a competitive top nine and an improved D with Seider and Walman paired right away.
I like our chances, still not great but, like our prospect pool, with potential.

He really is doing it the smart way.  He’s appeasing ownership and fans (somewhat) by icing a better hockey club every year by means of his own picks really working out and acquiring these stop gaps like you said with full intention of moving them for picks and truly better pieces without handcuffing the future at all.  A lot of GMs are out there playing checkers, this Yzerman mother f’r is playing chess

I’m not sure most people outside of Detroit’s fan base are fully aware of what kind of s*** show Yzerman actually walked into.  Amazing to see how much hate he was getting before the DeBrincate trade too.  I think hes done an amazing job even without that, but obviously he hit a home run bringing him here.

It's all Stevie Y, and Mo is a product of him.
That said Mo is a generational talent. I stand by that. He's 22 and arguably one of the best Dmen in the league. He's on pace to shatter hitting and blocked shot records. He also scores points if that matters. We drafted our own Chelios.
53 is going to end up in the rafters one day.

I think it´s a combination. Seider, as a future top five d-man in the league, and Yzerman, as a successfull GM and player, both make players around the league believe in the redwings. Whereas in the last Holland times ppl only came to Detroit when they were too old and overpaid. You need good cornerstones as much as a competent GM to lure players into playing for you and luckily we have both and our team starts to be the place to be again.
But I have to admit, that without Yzerman having the balls to pick Seider at #6 and recognizing what type of player he could be, it could have taken a lot longer to be where we are now.

Ok, this is probably going to be a long post, I am going to try to cover all the drafts, signings and trades that Yzerman has made since he came home. I think once it is done up to date, we will see that he has moved us much closer and faster to glory than Holland could ever had dreamed of. With that being said I will start with what Holland left us with his last season. YEAR ONE
