They're not missing games to play in the Olympics. They're not getting any more money this season than any other season. The owners still get revenue from 41 home games and a full TV schedule, so they're not losing money. This year, the Wings play their last game April 13th. 2 years ago it was April 7th, the year before that it was April 10th. The 08-09 season ended April 12th. They're not extending the season more than a few days from what it ended the last 3 full non Olympic years.

This is all about money - nothing more, nothing less. The olympics generate money that the NHL doesn't see, and the billionaires and multi-millionaires who own the NHL teams cannot stand that.
Thankfully the players see it differently. They don't get paid for the Olympics, but its still a big deal to them. Remember how Ovechkin said he would go AWOL if the NHL wouldn't release the players for Sochi?

Guess what NHL ? The players if they want to will go anyways but after seeing the conditions in Sochi I'm not surprised if some would pull out of that. Add to the that the ridiculous time difference (games at 6am anyone?!). Multi billonaires can't stand a standstill for two weeks unbelievable how greedy some of them are, must be a pleasure to work for them in normal life...

I think all the Korean NHL players will just go regardless of the leagues' policy is.

Nope. All injuries/illnesses are proven and documented. Now if you'll excuse me, I have an appointment to remove Bertuzzi's spleen for exactly 10 games or 21 days, whichever comes first.
I don't think we'd be messing around with waiving Tootoo if we were planning on scheduling injuries/illnesses unless we're hoping that the league will think that we have plans for when everyone comes back.
It could get interesting if our players continue to fall one by one during the season, especially if some are not well-documented. The league won't question broken bones or the like, but flu-like symptoms could get dicey.
We also need to make sure that the "sick" ones are on board with the Plot and don't let on to the media. <glares at Franzen whilst fondling a scalpel>
