Airborn 0 Report post Posted June 27, 2007 Ughh... The series with Texas has been horrible. The team as a whole has been horrible, but the bullpen is the most immediate consern. At this point, I think it's time for Jones to go. He said it himself a couple of weeks ago. The bullpen starts with the closer. Everything feeds off him, and right now I don't trust Jones to hold a 4 run lead much less keep us in a tie ballgame. Also, as I said last week, Grilli needs to go. If you can't consistantly throw strikes, you don't belong in a major league bullpen. I'm not huge on Gagne, especially considering what Texas wants for him. However, I might give the Royals a call about Dotel. I think he could be had for a decent price. I really don't know, but I do know this. If our bullpen doesn't straighten out, we're going to have a tough time making the post season.
Airborn 0 Report post Posted June 30, 2007 Umpire Terry Porter's strike zone made no sense last night. On two occasions he called high strikes to punch out Granderson and Ordonez that were about 2 inches out of the strike zone. However, in the 1st inning he called Ordonez out on a pitch that was about an inch below the knees and looked off the plate. So if that was his strikezone, it was the biggest one I've ever seen: From the ankles ot the chin!? To make it worse, I don't think Verlander benefited from the same strike zone. I think this was a case of an umpire calling a pitchers reputation more than the strike zone.
betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted July 2, 2007 Looks like another trade to shore up the bullpen. Tigers get Jose Capellan from Milwaukee. The pitching has really been on and off. When they're on, they're nasty but when they're off, they're awful.
BlakChamber 8 Report post Posted July 5, 2007 Hell of a game last night. I love the Tigers on ESPN, even if that means having to listen to ESPN "personalities."
Airborn 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2007 (edited) It's a good thing we never ended up trading Thames. After his last couple of performances, I have a feeling he's stole his buddy, Craig's, job. At least I'm hoping and praying he has Edited July 7, 2007 by Airborn
Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted July 7, 2007 Sweet, im so glad Thames had the granny and now Raburn is up. Have a seat Craig! God has he been awful. I remember I made a post way back in this thread about having a battle between my bowling average and Monroe's batting average. 2 months later and the winner is still in doubt! Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted July 8, 2007 It seems like every time i make an anti Monroe post he does something the next game. Hmmm....I really dont like him though so i might just have to completely stop talking about him!
Guest DetroitIan Report post Posted July 8, 2007 JUST got back from the Tigers game! That was soooo bad ass. My first 13 inning game! Pudge is the ******* man. What a game. What a night!

GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted July 9, 2007 (edited) A sweep of the Red Sox and first place going into the All Star Break. Not too bad The Tigers play 17 of their next 20 games on the road. Just the opposite, the Indians play 16 of 20 at home. If the Tigers can get through this stretch and maintain the division lead or keep the gap with the Indians close, they have a great shot at winning the Central Division. Not to mention Zumaya should be coming back here relatively soon, which makes everything even better. It should be an exciting second half of baseball. Go Tigers! betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted July 12, 2007 I think now that the first half and then some has been played out, it's pretty clear who the AL playoff teams will be. Boston, Cleveland, Detroit, Los Angeles. The Yankees are the only team really capable of making a miracle run, and they're way out, and I don't think Boston is going to let them. Seattle's decent but flawed, and the Angels have a chokehold on the division. Minnesota's the same, but they needed Liriano this year. All four teams are equally dangerous, so I don't think it matters who plays who in the ALDS, both series will probably go to five either way. This would be the first postseason without the Yankees in, what, 12, 14 years? HALLELUJAH. As for the NL, way more unpredictable. I'd say it's plausible that at least half the teams there have a legit shot at the postseason.
GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted July 14, 2007 Gary Sheffield is a beast with the bat right now. He abuses everything off anyone. I bet those people in the sports world that were saying the Tigers gave up too much to get Sheffield aren't saying a whole lot anymore. Another superb move by Dave Dombrowski. I bring this up because Sheff just hit a monster grand slam against Seattle.

GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted July 14, 2007 What do you call a firework stuck up someone's ass? a Roman colon! He got traded today for a ptbnl, as a result of his blowing up at Toledo last month. Good one. I'm glad this clown is out of the organization. Colon wasn't a good pitcher, and is an even worse person off the field. From what I read, he was allowed to continue pitching with Toledo as long as they were playing out-of-state. There is still a chance Colon could get jail time from the assualt on Jason Karnuth as well. I'm sorry for whatever team he got traded to.
Hockeytown Red Wings 245 Report post Posted July 14, 2007 Didnt we get Colon from Atlanta a year or two back? I'm trying to remember who we traded to get him. BTW, my radio went out, MLB is catching on to small radio stations who broadcast the Tigers games online. Keep me updated...

Colon was traded from Atlanta along with Zach Miner in exchange for Kyle Farnsworth. The Tigers are winning 6-3 going into the 9th inning.
Hockeytown Red Wings 245 Report post Posted July 14, 2007 Thats right...even with Colon being a bust, I'd take Miner for Farnsworth. I liked Farnsworth, he just never filled out his potential. And Miner is usually pretty solid.

And Miner is usually pretty solid. I agree, Miner has turned out pretty well. Lately, he has been pitching in the 8th inning of close games, which says something about Leyland's confidence in him. Or, it could also be the fact the Tigers bullpen is so depleted there are no other alternatives. It's not easy for a starting pitcher typically to come in and get outs in a tight situation, and Miner has done a great job of that since his call-up. * Tigers win 6-3 Edited July 14, 2007 by GoWings1905

When he made it. Dombrowski got ripped by the press (mainly Rob Parker and Drew Sharp) because they felt he was throwing in the towel too early. Now Miner is one of our best bullpen arms, and there was no way Farnsworth would have re-signed here.

If Rob Parker said it was a bad deal at the time, there was a pretty good chance that it would turn out well. I have more faith in Miner than I do in any other pitcher in the bullpen right now, including Jones. I'm kind of thinking that when Zumaya and Rodney (OK just Zumaya) come back, the bullpen could actually turn out to be pretty solid. They have Byrdak, McBride, and Seay to pitch against lefties. Maybe Grilli can turn things around at some point, and well I don't really expect much from Rodney anymore. I think we all know what Zoom is going to provide. I think Parker also went on record saying the Tigers should hire Bob Watson as GM over Dombrowski. Apparently there is no shame anymore. Otherwise Parker would have retired or changed identities by now.
Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted July 15, 2007 Im not exactly confident in Miner, given the way he fizzled last season after a hot start, but im glad to see him doing well in the pen so far. They still need to make one pretty big move for a relief pitcher I think.
Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted July 15, 2007 Im hoping the Tigers can get Brad Lidge, even if it means losing Trahern and another prospect. Its like Leyland has said, you can not count on Joel Zumaya coming back, you have to consider it like he's gone. If he makes it back, its a bonus. Looking at it that way, makes Lidge the way to go if the 'Stros will part with him. And if Zumaya does make it back 100%, imagine a team having to face Lidge AND Zumaya. Throw a lefty in between and managers will be left scratching their heads on how to counter that.

BlakChamber 8 Report post Posted July 15, 2007 Lidge would look good in a Tigers uniform. I was reading something about him in ESPN the Magazine (got it for free, I'd never pay for that crap), I guess the Astros GM isn't a big wheeler dealer though, so who knows if he'll deal.
