Recommended Posts

Martin Brodeur with a 1-0 win tonight, has 92 career shutouts, which ties him with George Hainsworth for 2nd on the all-time shutouts list.

He is now just 11 shutouts short of tying Terry Sawchuk's record of 103 career shutouts.

It was his 12th shutout of the year, which ties his career-high.

I sure am glad that it will be Brodeur who will end up taking the record from Sawchuk. I may have had to kill myself if it was Patrick Roy.

Brodeur is a class act who deserves any and all records and awards that he earns.

Brodeur is not even close to a class act, i'm not trying to air a man's dirty laundry but if you're intrested check his martial history,.............moving on,...........i hope he ketches patty, at least he deserves to be talked about as the greatest

Brodeur is a lot of things, but class act is not one of them. What he is, however, is a hell of a goaltender, and he deserves this record - should be get it.

Don't mistake a shutout record for a "best goalie ever" conversation, because there are others who stand out above him. Terry Sawchuk being one of them.

Doesn't Hainsworth have 94 shutouts?

Well, Terry Sawchuk currently has the shutout record, so.....

this is one of those goalie records everyone thought would never be broken, I didn't realize Brodeur was this close.

for those interested there's an excellent biography about Sawchuck by David Dupuis that really shows who he was as a person.

The only goalie record that ever was in the 'cannot be threatened' range is owned by Glenn Hall.

Yes, I got that. Thanks. I was saying that Brodeur breaking that record seems inevitable - being that he has 12 this season and doesn't look to be drawing his career to a close.

When he does surpass Sawchuk in the shutout department, it doesn't automatically make him a better goaltender. Perhaps this wording is more clear. Sorry for the confusion.

I wouldn't call it tainted, Marty is a great goalie, but there was a lot of defensive hockey over the past 10 years, and the Devils were the epitome of defensive hockey. But, congrats to Marty if he does it.

Yeah, but is that record even relevant in today's game? I think it goes beyond the game changing such that more or less goals are being scored. This is a record that is literally impossible to break under today's circumstances.

So what about Hainsworth? Are his shutouts invalid because he played in the lowest scoring era in NHL history?

How about Sawchuk? Are his shutouts worth less than Roy's because Roy played in the 80s?

Yeah, but is that record even relevant in today's game? I think it goes beyond the game changing such that more or less goals are being scored. This is a record that is literally impossible to break under today's circumstances.

Which is precisely why it cannot be threatened!

No record that is based entirely on performance and reliant on whether defensive or offensive hockey is played is untouchable. Glenn Hall has an untouchable record (consecutive games played) while Gretzky, who holds over 60 records and many by a large gap, does not hold one that could be considered untouchable.

Yeah, but nobody is mentioning that in like 9 out of the last 10 years he's played over 70 games a year. Not trying to take anything away from him, but how many other goalies have played nearly as many games?

How would that be taking anything away from him?

The guy's a horse, and a great goaltender. His save % would probably be even better if Jersey didn't play him so much.

It always amazes me when people try to diminish his acheivements because of the Devil's defensive system or his personal life. (that comment is not directed at you, Sleight).

I feel like it's people still harboring hatred for the Devils from the mid 90s, who haven't even seen them play recently.

Brodeur will go down as one of the all time greats.

As subtle as always....

So Martin Brodeur just plain sucks.

Priceless..

The team still plays the same style. I was reading somewhere earlier today where someone actually nicknamed them the RoH (ruiners of hockey). It may not be as bad as it was, but they are still a very, very boring team to watch.

I'm not arguing that so much. But you can't attribute all of Brodeur's success to their play. Surely it's helped him, but if you plug a lesser goalie into their system, he's not suddenly gonna be a contender for the Vezina.

Agreed. The style of play the team plays certainly helps, but if you are going to get into that argument, you can translate that to a lot other guys as well. Arguments are so subjective to begin with, such as this guy has better linemates than that guy, etc. The whole Gretzky vs. Lemieux debate, etc.

I find it much easier to simply look at the stats....end the discussion there....but that would be boring wouldn't it?
