Maltby ?

Recommended Posts

I think he'll be back personally. His agent and Ken Holland have been in contract talks since about the beginning of last month. It all depends on what Babcock will do with him. If Kopecky is not damaged goods and can come back, this obviously puts the Wings in a strange situation from having so many forwards. That may push Maltby down to the #13 forward spot, and who knows if he'll be very happy with that.

I think the only way we'd ever see the old Maltby again is if the Wings signed an enforcer. That way Maltby can go in, piss people off, and just skate away and let the other guy fight for him, kinda like what he did with McCarty. Holland is not too keen on enforcers though, so I doubt that will happen.

I hate to say it, but he is done.

I wouldn't be suprised to see him not dressed for a few playoff games.

are you kidding? malts has a spot on the roster, he will not sit unless one of his legs are hanging by only a couple of tendons. If anyone deserves to sit, its sammy. Flip and Rex have done too well to sit down and sammy hasn't done s*** since the season started.

100% agree with you.

Yeah I would be shocked too. Yes he always has been a key in the playoff runs, kind of like McCarty, they both always seem to get that cluth Overtime goal, game winner, etc.

Me to!

I couldnt agree more, Malts comes alive during the play offs. He might not be a scorer but still i would be shocked if he was resigned.

I think he'll be back but under a mill

If he's back under a mil, that would mean he's not as worthy as he's now.

Would he be then so worthy to play on a NHL front runner team like Detroit?!

I hope that if they do resign him its for the right reason and not the wrong ones. With the cap and all, we can't afford to keep people just because they have been there so long, they need to be able to still contrabute to the team. I think he can but only for the RIGHT price.

I love Malts, but the time has come for he to depart I think...

Whats your reasoning?

Yeah thats what I was stating in previous posts if you read, not sure if you skipped to the end.

I think he will stay for a cheap price, due to he love the redwings organization, and has passion to play here.

He will sign cheap.

Sadly, I think this is the end of Maltby's days with the Wings. My gut tells me that some team will be stupid enough to offer him way more money than he is worth. Hopefully I'm wrong and the Wings will sign him for under a million.

I think you only have to look at Malts recent ice time to give you an idea of what might happen. He and Draps were th SH kings of the Wings but just lately its Flip out there with Draps on the PK. Cleary and Franzen are also overtaking him in that area and as his points aren't what they were the biggest factor these past 2 years has been his drop in the +- area. If you look at his last 2 years and compare them to the previous 2 its one hellova drop.

2005-07 PL 162 11G 10A 21PTS -19 130PMN 1SHG

2002-04 PL 161 28G 42A 70PTS +41 171PMN 8SHG

His role on the team hasn't changed over that period and his partner neither, compare Draper over the same time

2005-07 PL 159 24G 37A 61PTS +9 112PMN 6SHG

2002-04 PL 149 38G 37A 75PTS +28 113PMN 6SHG

Judge for yourselfs guys but I would be surprised if he got offered more than a year, enough time for his successor to be ready. The kid in Medicine Hat.

I'd be shocked if he weren't a Wing next season. Despite his not so great seasons, he's still an asset to the team. Well at least I think so! Especially when the playoffs roll around. Honestly..that's what's going to make or break him getting signed, the playoffs.

Do we share a brain ?

I think Malts has a great role on this team and is a proven playoff guy.

A note on how far Maltby has fallen off:

Last night when Hasek got a penalty, the Wings sent Maltby into the box to serve it for him.

You would have never seen that when Malts still had his game. He's isn't even a top 5 penalty killer for us anymore. He's behind Franzen, Draper, Datsyuk, Calder and Filpulla. I can see him being brought back, but I don't think it would be a smart thing to do. Give Kopecky, Cleary and Franzen more ice time.

Edit: I was at the game last night, so if there was a reason Malts served it rather than anyone else, let me know.

I hope that he will be back. He might not put up the offense, but it's not like the team's short on goal scorers. When a team has such success as the Wings do with scorers, some players need to bring another element other than offense. I think that Malts does that. Besides, he is still part of the heart and soul of the team. I really hope it doesn't happen. I still like him. He brings a lot of other positives to the team other than goal scoring.

Hope he brings it this year in the playoff's like last year. That first game was amazing.

Maltby hasn't lost his game, the league changed the game which made players such as him far less effective.

That being said, guys like Maltby earn their paycheck in the playoffs, anything that they do in the regular season is a bonus...

I got dibs on either Boston or the NY Islanders for overpaying him. :P

Sometimes I watch Maltby and I think that he has no place on this team anymore. Not on The Red Wings, but on THIS team. It's so different now... then when he was grinding it up on the Grind Line.

I think he will be on the team next year for some of the reasons people said, and because he's been a long time Wing, and I can't really see him wanting to leave, or us giving him the boot. It would be sad, really, to see him leave, and I can't picture it.

It might be the right move business-wise to get rid of him, but the one thing I do like about the Wings org is that they make them family, and will at least try to find a place for players that they love as long as possible..so that's something I can get behind and respect even if Maltby's role is diminished.
