Everyone is panicing like we just lost the heart of our team.

Bert is not an enforcer, is a defensive liability while on the ice and was probably asking for WAY to much.

Well, you know, I agree with you...but this is getting a little bizarre, don't you think? What is Kenny waiting for? A ridiculously long and overpaid deal for Hasek...who MAY have a great year like last year...but who could also blow out like he did for us before and for Ottawa?

I've never been one to ride the Bash Ken Holland Train...but this is sort of absurd now. He's not bringing in new blood (save for Rafalski...which I contemplate the offensive power that he (doesn't) bring)...and he's not retaining old blood.

Wasn't this the year that he hinted at for being THE year with mad free agent signings? (I seem to remember him saying as much to the Free Press or Detroit News).

When Mr. Holland is going to secure our goaltending situation than we will be better...

If Dom fades out, that will be time for lgw to blow up. I don't think it will happen though.... I think?

Maybe they're just saving up for Sergei .. that would cheer me up

;)

I refuse to believe that's the case.

He's got to be working on something special. There's just no other explanation.

A gain in cap room to get who?? Please enlighten me. I realize Bertuzzi wasn't the be all end all of the team but he's probably much better than whoever is going to be forced to play from Grand Rapids. You think Daryl Bootland is going to light it up? I hope so but I woudn't count on it.

I am not suggesting Bootland........but there are guys we can get or trade for.

......but at the price of a guy with the history and baggage of Bert....this is addition by subtraction.....

...people forget...the Wings have a front office and scouting staff other teams envy.....watch this extra cash bring some serious talent!!! :D

I don't know about Guerin... he was invisible last playoff...

Too bad that Holland doesn't have a balls to give Penner offer sheet!!!

really feels like Shanny will make his way back now. with how we need a 2nd line foward and the rangers have no cap room left with there 2 big signins.

I was thinking the same. Watch Shanny and or Kozzie make their way back here.

The Rangers still have plenty of space to sign Shanahan. TSN ran an article on it.

I don't think that he's coming back... I don't know if it's true but it seems like he and Bab's it wasn't great relationship

I don't think this one needs a response, all in all. Come on, show how they -will- get beaten by Anaheim, SJ, or Calg.

See last year? I don't care if San Jose played down, we're not in a bad position. We could be in a better pos. for sure.

Every year the Wings have made the playoffs since 98 (with the exception of the 02 star studded team that illitch bought) they have been beaten by bigger, tougher teams. That's what I'm basing my statement on. It doesn't matter now, though. Bertuzzi for 4 million is absolutely ridiculous. I was thinking he'd get half that. Burke's an ass and always has been. I hope this comes back to burn him. He's had a vendetta against the wings since his Vancouver days and I wonder if that's not clouding his judgement a bit.

I loved the acquistion of Bertuzzi, thought he was exactly the type of player that would thrive in this city and become an instant fan favorite. It never really got the chance to happen, which is unfortunate, but I don't think letting him go spells any sort of doom for next season. Will he be better throughout the season with the Ducks than he was at the end of last season with the Wings? Probably. Will the Wings go on to sign a free agent that will produce more than Bertuzzi? Probably.

I'm sick of all the talk of the loss of Bertuzzi signaling the loss of our toughness. First of all, I'll take more goals over more hits any day. Secondly, however sad it might be, being tough has sort of lost its place in this new, modern-day NHL. If you look at the last few teams to win the Stanley Cup (Ducks, Hurricanes, Lightning), I see absolutely none of this "toughness" that everybody keeps talking about. If a guy like Bob Probert wanted to break into the league today, it would never happen. Guys like Darren McCarty have floundered around for the past couple of seasons, because their identities have been lost. There is no more fighting, there is no more grit, there is no more "toughness." So, say what you want about the fact that Bertuzzi was big and intimidating, but intimidation doesn't quite work anymore unless you can put pucks in the net.

Sign me a free agent who can.

I'm with you on Bertuzzi, but are you saying the Ducks weren't tough? They led the regular season AND the playoffs in fights. And no more fighting? The league had better fighting numbers this year than last as well:

NHL Fighting Stats

Granted, these numbers are "New NHL" numbers but still an increase from last year.

Physical intimidation DOES work, the Wings fall victim to it in the playoffs year after year.
